Chemical fertilizers are commonly used to meet the nutritional demands of crops and boost their yields. However, their high costs and excessive application in soils increase the cost of production and have negative effects on the soil and environmental health. Vermicompost is an organic amendment that can potentially lessen the dependence on chemical fertilizers, with the additional advantages of sustainable nutrient supply to crops and maintaining soil health. To evaluate the potential of the two diverse vermicompost, the sole and combined applications of these vermicompost with reduced rates of chemical fertilizers were used for tomato cultivation in a field study. The results indicated that vermicompost produced from cattle manure combined with chemical fertilizers was more effective in improving tomato growth, physiology, yield, and nutritional attributes. Compared to the control treatment (NP applied), the combined application of vermicompost and chemical fertilizer significantly improved the root length (21.6%), plant height (167%), SPAD value (13.5%), chlorophyll ‘a’ (96%), chlorophyll ‘b’ (161%), relative water content (16%), membrane stability index (18%), carotenoid (87%), yield (82%), photosynthetic rate (148%), fruit diameter (83%), protein (89%), fat (27.5%), fiber (12%), vitamin C (52%), calcium (54%), magnesium (117%), phosphorus (38%) and potassium (128%). In addition, significant improvements in different soil physicochemical properties were also pragmatic. The results suggest that vermicompost application with reduced doses of chemical fertilizers can be used to improve crop yield and soil physico-chemical properties.

The widespread use of tetracycline (TC) poses potential hazards to ecosystems and human health. In this study, ZIF-67 was successfully synthesized using a room-temperature static synthesis method and applied to the efficient removal of TC from water. It was shown that the maximum adsorption of TC by ZIF-67 could reach 1583.128 mg·g−1 at pH = 5.0, an initial TC concentration of 450 mg·g−1, an adsorption time of 720 min, and a temperature of 308K.The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir’s isothermal adsorption model could describe the adsorption process better, which proved that the adsorption of ZIF-67 on TC was mainly monolayer adsorption dominated by chemisorption. Mechanistic studies showed that the adsorption process of ZIF-67 on TC was mainly through electrostatic interactions, pore adsorption, π–π interactions, and framework coordination of ZIF-67 surface cations with TC.

A field experiment was conducted to explore the effects of combined application of organic and chemical fertilizers (organic-chemical fertilizers) on reclaimed soil fertility and rice yield. The experiment involved five treatments: no nitrogen (N) fertilizer (CK1), 100% chemical fertilizer N (CK2), 40% chicken manure N + 60% chemical fertilizer N (T1), 40% vermicompost N + 60% chemical fertilizer N (T2), 40% rapeseed meal fertilizer N + 60% chemical fertilizer N (T3). Organic-chemical fertilizers maintained or increased rice yield. Rice yields of T2 and T3 increased by 6.7% and 8.9%, respectively, as compared with CK2. T1 showed similar value of rice yield with CK2. Organic-chemical fertilizers application increased contents of soil organic C (SOC), total N (TN), alkali-hydrolyzable N (AN), NH4+-N, NO3–N, available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK) as well as CEC by 10.5%~15.9%, 8.9%~39.3%, 16.9%~74.5%, 38.1%~77.2%, 18.3%~136.5%, 27.7%~75.0%, 16.1%~24.7% and 7.2 ~ 26.0%. T3 had highest soil TN, AN, NH4+-N, NO3–N, CEC as well as T2 showed the highest contents of soil AP and AK. Organic-chemical fertilizers application increased soil sucrase (S-SC), urease (S-UE) and catalase (S-CAT) activities. The highest soil S-SC activity was detected in T3, and the highest soil S-UE and soil alkaline phosphatase (S-AKP) activities were observed in T2. Rice yield was positively related to SOC, TN, AN, NH4+-N, NO3–N, AP and AK as well as S-SC, S-UE and S-AKP activities. In conclusion, 40% organic N + 60% chemical N application could improve soil fertility and rice yield in reclaimed soils, with rapeseed meal fertilizer the most effective organic N source, followed by vermicompost and chicken manure.

To achieve the resource utilization of garden waste, in this study, we used garden waste as the main raw material and conducted static composting with high-temperature aerobic treatment and forced ventilation by adding appropriate external additives. Our results showed that during the composting process, the pH was weakly alkaline, and the electrical conductivity was between 1.42 and 1.50 mS/cm. The E4/E6 (an important indicator of the quality or degree of condensation and aromatization of humic acid) gradually decreased, and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents increased. The germination index gradually rose and ultimately exceeded 80%. Treatment (T2) with a final C/N ratio of 25:1 and the addition of 0.3% bacterial agent resulted in the highest nutrient content and the best degree of compost maturity. All indicators met the requirements of the Chinese “Technical Requirements for Urban Landscape Waste Resource Recycling and Deep Processing (GB/T 40199-2021)”. When using a composite substrate of garden waste and other horticultural substrates for planting, a membership function was executed for comprehensive evaluation. The V (T2):V (peat):V (vermiculite):V (vermiculite) = 135:135:30:00 substrate treatment resulted in optimal lettuce growth and quality. In summary, combining the compost products of garden waste with traditional cultivation substrates at a specific ratio shows favorable applicative prospects.

Reducing nitrogen (N) input is a key measure to achieve a sustainable rice production in China, especially in Jiangsu Province. Tiller is the basis for achieving panicle number that plays as a major factor in the yield determination. In actual production, excessive N is often applied in order to produce enough tillers in the early stages. Understanding how N regulates tillering in rice plants is critical to generate an integrative management to reduce N use and reaching tiller number target. Aiming at this objective, we utilized RNA sequencing and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to compare the transcriptomes surrounding the shoot apical meristem of indica (Yangdao6, YD6) and japonica (Nipponbare, NPB) rice subspecies. Our results showed that N rate influenced tiller number in a different pattern between the two varieties, with NPB being more sensitive to N enrichment, and YD6 being more tolerant to high N rate. Tiller number was positively related to N content in leaf, culm and root tissue, but negatively related to the soluble carbohydrate content, regardless of variety. Transcriptomic comparisons revealed that for YD6 when N rate enrichment from low (LN) to medium (MN), it caused 115 DEGs (LN vs. MN), from MN to high level (HN) triggered 162 DEGs (MN vs. HN), but direct comparison of low with high N rate showed a 511 DEGs (LN vs. HN). These numbers of DEG in NPB were 87 (LN vs. MN), 40 (MN vs. HN), and 148 (LN vs. HN). These differences indicate that continual N enrichment led to a bumpy change at the transcription level. For the reported sixty-five genes which affect tillering, thirty-six showed decent expression in SAM at tiller starting phase, among them only nineteen being significantly influenced by N level, and two genes showed significant interaction between N rate and variety. Gene ontology analysis revealed that the majority of the common DEGs are involved in general stress responses, stimulus responses, and hormonal signaling process. WGCNA network identified twenty-two co-expressing gene modules and ten candidate hubgenes for each module. Several genes associated with tillering and N rate fall on the related modules. These indicate that there are more genes participating in tillering regulation in response to N enrichment.

Soil heavy metal pollution has become one of the major environmental issues of global concern and solving this problem is a major scientific and technological need for today’s socio-economic development. Environmentally friendly bioremediation methods are currently the most commonly used for soil heavy metal pollution remediation. Via controlled experiments, the removal characteristics of chromium from contaminated soil were studied using earthworms (Eisenia fetida and Pheretima guillelmi) and plants (ryegrass and maize) at different chromium concentrations (15 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg) in acidic and alkaline soils. The effects of chromium contamination on biomass, chromium bioaccumulation, and earthworm gut microbial communities were also analyzed. The results showed that E. fetida had a relatively stronger ability to remove chromium from acidic and alkaline soil than P. guillelmi, and ryegrass had a significantly better ability to remove chromium from acidic and alkaline soil than maize. The combined use of E. fetida and ryegrass showed the best effect of removing chromium from contaminated soils, wih the highest removal rate (63.23%) in acidic soil at low Cr concentrations. After soil ingestion by earthworms, the content of stable chromium (residual and oxidizable forms) in the soil decreased significantly, while the content of active chromium (acid-extractable and reducible forms) increased significantly, thus promoting the enrichment of chromium in plants. The diversity in gut bacterial communities in earthworms decreased significantly following the ingestion of chromium-polluted soil, and their composition differences were significantly correlated with soil acidity and alkalinity. Bacillales, Chryseobacterium, and Citrobacter may have strong abilities to resist chromium and enhance chromium activity in acidic and alkaline soils. There was also a significant correlation between changes in enzyme activity in earthworms and their gut bacterial communities. The bacterial communities, including Pseudomonas and Verminephrobacter, were closely related to the bioavailability of chromium in soil and the degree of chromium stress in earthworms. This study provides insights into the differences in bioremediation for chromium-contaminated soils with different properties and its biological responses.
