Mikhail (Michael) Liberman is a professor at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics. After obtaining a PhD in 1972 from the P. Lebedev Physical Institute Russian Academy of Sciences, he began his career as a theoretical physicist under the legendary scientists Ya. Zel’dovich and E. Lifshitz at the L. Landau theoretical department of the P. Kapitza Institute for Physical Problems. Liberman's research has been highly influential in various areas of theoretical physics, including shock wave and plasma physics, astrophysics, quantum theory, and combustion, among them, an exact analytical solution for a hydrogen atom and hydrogen molecule in a high magnetic field; theory of the Bose condensate of excitons in a high magnetic
field. He is one of the world's leading scientists in combustion theory. Some achievements are a fractal structure of a spherically expanding flame; a nonlinear equation for a nonperturbative description of premixed flames subject to the hydrodynamic instabilities, and its analytical solutions. For the first time, he explained the mechanism of deflagration-to-detonation transition and the mechanism of tulip flame formation. Liberman authored over 300 peer-reviewed papers and books on shock waves, plasma physics and combustion. He also served as a principal investigator on numerous projects of the Swedish Research Council, Swedish Energy Agency, and Swedish Royal Academy, and as a scientific consultant of the National laboratories in the USA and industry.
