The purpose of feature extraction technique in image processing is to represent the image in its compact and unique form of single values or matrix vector. Low level feature extraction involves automatic extraction of features from an image without doing any processing method. In this paper, we consider the use of high level feature extraction technique to investigate the characteristic of narrow and broad weed by implementing the 2 dimensional discrete wavelet transform (2D-DWT) as the processing method. Most transformation techniques produce coefficient values with the same size as the original image. Further processing of the coefficient values must be applied to extract the image feature vectors. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to implement feature extraction technique using the 2D-DWT and the extracted coefficients are used to represent the image for classification of narrow and broad weed. Results obtained suggest that the extracted 2D-DWT coefficients can uniquely represents the two different weed type.

Palm oil is a major contributor to Malaysia’s GDP in the agriculture sector. The sheer vastness of oil palm plantations requires a huge effort to administer. An oil palm plantation in regards to the irrigation process, fertilization, and planning for planting new trees require an audit process to correctly count the oil palm trees. Currently, the audit is done manually using aerial view images. Therefore, an effective and efficient method is imperative. This paper proposes a new automatic end-to-end method based on deep learning (DL) for detection and counting oil palm trees from images obtained from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) drone. The acquired images were first cropped and sampled into small size of sub-images, which were divided into a training set, a validation set, and a testing set. A DL algorithm based on Faster-RCNN was employed to build the model, extracts features from the images and identifies the oil palm trees, and gives information on the respective locations. The model was then trained and used to detect individual oil palm tree based on data from the testing set. The overall accuracy of oil palm tree detection was measured from three different sites with 97.06%, 96.58%, and 97.79% correct oil palm detection. The results show that the proposed method is more effective, accurate detection, and correctly counts the number of oil palm trees from the UAV images.
Kidney-related health problems cause millions of deaths around the world annually. Fortunately, most kidney problems are curable if detected at the earliest stage. Continuous monitoring of ammonia from exhaled breath is considered as a replacement for the conventional blood-based monitoring of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney failure owing to its cost effectiveness, non-invasiveness, excellent sensitivity, and capabilities for real-time measurement. The detection of ammonia for renal failure requires a biosensor with a detection limit of 1000 ppb (1 ppm). Among biosensors, plasmonic biosensors have attracted considerable research interest due to their potential for ultra-sensitivity, single particle/molecular level detection capability, multiplexing capability, photostability, real-time measurement, label-free measurement, room temperature operation, naked-eye readability, ease of miniaturization via simple sensor chip fabrication, and instrumentation, among other features. In this review, plasmonic sensors for the detection of ammonia gas relevant to kidney problems (LOD ≤ 1 ppm) are reviewed. In addition, the utilized strategies and surface functionalization for the plasmonic sensor are highlighted. Moreover, the main limitations of the reported sensors are stated for the benefit of future researchers. Finally, the challenges and prospects of plasmonic-based ammonia gas biosensors for potential application in the monitoring and screening of renal (kidney) failure, as well as the endpoint of the dialysis session, are stated.
Accurate location information has significant commercial and economic value as they are widely used in intelligent manufacturing, material localization and smart homes. Magnetic sequence-based approaches show great promise mainly due to their pervasiveness and stability. However, existing geomagnetic indoor localization methods are facing the problems of location ambiguity and feature extraction deficiency, which will lead to large localization errors. To address these issues, we propose a coarse-to-fine geomagnetic indoor localization method based on deep learning. First, a multidimensional geomagnetic feature extraction method is presented which can extract magnetic features from spatial and temporal aspects. Then, a hierarchical deep neural network model is devised to extract more accurate geomagnetic information and corresponding location clues for more accurate localization. Finally, localization is achieved through a particle filter combined with IMU localization. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methods, we carried out several experiments at three trial paths with two heterogeneous devices, Vivo X30 and Huawei Mate30. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve more accurate localization performance than the state-of-the-art methods. Meanwhile, the proposed algorithm has low cost and good pervasiveness for different devices.
Machine vision is an application of computer vision to automate conventional work in industry, manufacturing or any other field. Nowadays, people in agriculture industry have embarked into research on implementation of engineering technology in their farming activities. One of the precision farming activities that involve machine vision system is automatic weeding strategy. Automatic weeding strategy in oil palm plantation could minimize the volume of herbicides that is sprayed to the fields. This paper discusses an automatic weeding strategy in oil palm plantation using machine vision system for the detection and differential spraying of weeds. The implementation of vision system involved the used of image processing technique to analyze weed images in order to recognized and distinguished its types. Image filtering technique has been used to process the images as well as a feature extraction method to classify the type of weed images. As a result, the image processing technique contributes a promising result of classification to be implemented in machine vision system for automated weeding strategy.
