Dr. Laura Farina is a Research Fellow in the Translational Medical Device Lab at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG). She received her B.Sc. in Clinical Eng. in 2010, her M.Sc. in Biomedical Eng. in 2013 and her Ph.D. in Information and Communication Technology – Applied Electromagnetism in 2017, from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. During her Marie Skłodowska-Curie MedTrain Fellowship at CÚRAM (NUIG) she worked on the development of novel microwave ablation systems for the treatment of functional adrenal adenomas causing hypertension. Now, her research is focused on microwave thermal ablation for lung cancer. Her research activity has been focused on the experimental and numerical characterization of the electromagnetic, thermal and physical changes undergone by tissues treated with microwave ablation procedures. She worked also in projects involving nanoparticle manipulation, dielectric spectroscopy and microwave imaging. She collaborates with different laboratories in academia and industry, in Italy, Israel, Czech Republic, Malta, Netherlands and US; she supports start-ups and small companies in the development novel electromagnetic thermal ablation devices. Dr Laura Farina participated in two already completed COST Actions and she is Management Committee Substitute for Ireland for the current COST Action MyWave CA17115. She is member of the ASME Thermal Medicine Committee and former member of the Italian Society of electromagnetism.
