The magnetizing inductance of the medium frequency transformer (MFT) impacts the performance of the isolated dc-dc power converters. The ferrite material is considered for high power transformers but it requires an assembly of type “I” cores resulting in a multi air gap structure of the magnetic core. The authors claim that the multiple air gaps are randomly distributed and that the average air gap length is unpredictable at the industrial design stage. As a consequence, the required effective magnetic permeability and the magnetizing inductance are difficult to achieve within reasonable error margins. This article presents the measurements of the equivalent B(H) and the equivalent magnetic permeability of two three-phase MFT prototypes. The measured equivalent B(H) is used in an FEM simulation and compared against a no load test of a 100 kW isolated dc-dc converter showing a good fit within a 10% error. Further analysis leads to the demonstration that the equivalent magnetic permeability and the average air gap length are nonlinear functions of the number of air gaps. The proposed exponential scaling function enables rapid estimation of the magnetizing inductance based on the ferrite material datasheet only.

The introduction of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and the electricity market liberalization have pointed out the need to upgrade the current electricity transmission network. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system is potentially the key. Recent advances in power electronics have allowed the introduction of power converters in power system applications as the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC). In the same perspective, grid scale Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) have broadly appeared. The dual purposing to combine both systems can provide a completely new solution. Even though each submodule (SM) within modular converter can have its own ESS, decreasing the number of energy storage submodules (ES-SMs) may be required to reduce the cost. This paper deals with the opportunities to introduce split storage into an MMC. The analysis is focused on the internal energy exchange to maintain the proper function of the converter by using circulating current. Analysis shows that, SM capacitor voltage ripple or semiconductors load are greatly influenced by additional circulating current injection. This study helps to design embedded ESSs in the converter to provide new function like ancillary services for power system operation. Finally, a simulation of an MMC with ESS confirms analytical calculations.

The number of high voltage direct current (HVDC) links continue to increase over the years, most of them, for offshore applications or bulk power transmission over long distances. The present paper evaluates the possible development of a direct current (dc) grid in Europe given the present, and future, HVDC links. Eight potential cases for the interconnection between close links are suggested as starting scenario for a multiterminal network. The need of a dc-dc converter and its special requirements are evaluated in function of suggested interconnections. As an example, a case study is chosen to evaluate the behavior of an interconnection between line commutated converter (LCC) and voltage source converter (VSC) link using a front-to-front (F2F) isolated converter.

This article proposes a methodology of Cost-Performance Assessment (CPA) enabling the efficient cost evaluation required for the Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA). The proposed method is applied for the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) in offshore wind high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission. Thanks to the developed model, an analysis of submodule voltage rating is performed demonstrating the interest of this methodology in the evaluation of new technologies for HVDC transmission. The analysis shows that increasing the submodule (SM) voltage could lead to savings in the MMC cost and weight.

HVDC grids are a promising alternative for the expansion of the existing AC grid. They are interesting for the integration of large-scale renewable energy sources, connecting high power offshore windfarms, interconnecting new market areas, including asynchronous AC grids and off-grid communities, and they can even provide ancillary services to the AC system. It is expected to create a more reliable and flexible transmission grid using HVDC grids. However, their development will require, among other technologies, DC-DC conversion systems. Although the DC-DC conversion techniques are well understood in low and medium voltage, a specific review on the approaches for high voltage is needed. This paper presents an overview of the DC-DC power converters dedicated to HVDC proposing a classification based on their structure. Two large families are established: those which provide galvanic isolation, and those which do not. Several sub-families are also proposed. An overview of the main HVDC applications that can be targeted with each family is also presented, highlighting the main converter requirements for each application case.

The paper presents the results of experimental studies of the medium frequency transformer. The object of the research was a prototype of a single-phase transformer with a core made of ferrite I-core elements and windings made of Litz conductors. The research was carried out to determine the parameters of the transformer's mathematical model. The scope of the tests included determining the magnetic hysteresis loop and measuring the winding impedance. The magnetic hysteresis loop has been included in the transformer model using a static Preisach model with feedback. The simulation results were compared with the measurement results.

High-voltage direct current (HVDC) is more and more often implemented for long distance electrical energy transmission, especially for off-shore wind farms. In this study, a full DC off-shore wind farm, which requires a high-power and high-voltage DC/DC converter, is considered. In order to reduce the size of the converter, the trend is to increase operating frequency. Silicon carbide (SiC) metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) are becoming industrially available and give scope for the realisation of high-performance DC/DC converters based on modular architectures. This study presents a prospective analysis of the potential of such devices in HVDC power systems. Considering the characteristics of Si insulated-gate bipolar transistor and SiC MOSFET power modules, two DC/DC converter topologies are compared in terms of losses and number of components. In conclusion, a study of the efficiency based on converter energy loss is presented.

In this paper, a modelling method of a 25 kV-50 Hz railway line, in a frequency range from 0 to 5 kHz, is presented. A model is proposed to quantity current and voltage harmonics generated by traction converters in different points of the network. An equivalent circuit, taking into account the skin effect for time-domain simulations, is also proposed. A new model, based on state space representation and transfer functions is developed to simplify the study of the interactions between several trains circulating on a line sector. As an example, the amplitudes of the harmonics generated by on-board active rectifiers are computed at several points of the network for a given topology of the overhead line and several positions of two trains on a sector with a junction.

A novel technique for monitoring the condition of metallized polypropylene film (MPPF) capacitors installed in the dc link of railway power trains is proposed in this paper. The technique is based on the capacitance estimation of the two different capacitors used in the dc link (dc filtering and 2F filter capacitors), and it is done without adding any extra sensor or filter to the respective traction drive scheme. Therefore, the proposed method is implemented using software but not additional hardware for the different trains. Two other important passive component parameters of the traction drive are also monitored, all of them by means of curve fitting based on the least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm. The proposed technique is implemented and validated at simulation and experimental levels, using MATLAB/Simulink and a 1.2-MW traction drive test bench. Very accurate results are obtained, and the predictive maintenance of MPPF capacitors for different topologies of railway power trains can be set through the proposed technique.
