Improving the separation efficiency of photo-generated electron–hole pair is a key issue in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this work, we successfully improved the efficiency of photo-generated carrier separation using the synergistic action of sulfur (S) vacancies and a Ni2P co-catalyst. Vs-Zn0.5Cd0.5S (Vs-ZCS) with S vacancies was designed and constructed, and Vs-ZCS/Ni2P photocatalysts were prepared with non-precious metal Ni2P as a co-catalyst. Among all the produced materials, Vs-ZCS/Ni2P-5% has a photocatalytic characteristic of 40.81 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 7.88, 3.08 and 3.75 times greater than those of ZCS (5.18 mmol g−1 h−1), Vs-ZCS (13.25 mmol g−1 h−1) and ZCS/Ni2P-5% (10.88 mmol g−1 h−1), respectively. The results of transient photo-current, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, photoluminescence and time-resolved fluorescence show that the synergistic effect of S vacancies and Ni2P significantly promotes the separation and transfer efficiency of photo-generated carriers, as well as the photocatalytic hydrogen production reaction. Superoxide radicals and electrons are the active species for photocatalytic hydrogen generation, which is confirmed by active species capture tests and EPR. This study presents an innovative approach for developing photocatalysts with low cost and good catalytic performance.
Photocatalysis is a hopeful technology to solve various environmental problems, but it is still a technical task to produce large-scale photocatalysts in a simple and sustainable way. Here, nano-flower β-Bi2O3/TiO2 composites were prepared via a facile solvothermal method, and the photocatalytic performances of β-Bi2O3/TiO2 composites with different Bi/Ti molar ratios were studied. The nano-flower Bi2O3/TiO2 composites were studied by SEM, XRD, XPS, BET, and PL. The PL result proved that the construction of staggered heterojunction enhanced the separation efficiency of carriers. The degradation RhB was applied to study the photocatalytic performances of prepared materials. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of RhB increased from 61.2% to 99.6% when the molar ratio of Bi/Ti was 2.1%. It is a mesoporous approach to enhance photocatalytic properties by forming heterojunction in Bi2O3/TiO2 composites, which increases the separation efficiency of the generated carriers and improves photocatalytic properties. The photoactivity of the Bi2O3/TiO2 has no evident changes after the fifth recovery, indicating that the Bi2O3/TiO2 composite has distinguished stability.
Heterojunction photocatalytic materials show excellent performance in degrading toxic pollutants. This study investigates the influence of calcination temperature on the performances of floral Bi2O3/TiO2 composite photocatalyst crystal, which was prepared with glycerol, bismuth nitrate, and titanium tetrachloride as the major raw materials via the solvothermal method. XRD, SEM/TEM, BET, Uv-vis, and XPS were employed to analyze the crystal structure, morphology, specific surface area, band gap, and surface chemical structure of the calcined temperature catalysts. The calcination temperature influence on the catalytic performance of composite photocatalysis was tested with rhodamine B (RhB) as the degradation object. The results revealed the high catalytic activity and higher photocatalytic performance of the Bi2O3/TiO2 catalyst. The degradation efficiency of the Bi2O3/TiO2 catalyst to RhB was 97%, 100%, and 91% at 400 °C, 450 °C, and 500 °C calcination temperatures, respectively, in which the peak degradation activity appeared at 450 °C. The characterization results show that the appropriate calcination temperature promoted the crystallization of the Bi2O3/TiO2 catalyst, increased its specific surface area and the active sites of catalytic reaction, and improved the separation efficiency of electrons and holes.
Antibiotics in aquatic environments present a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. Activation of carbon-catalyzed persulfate is a prospective approach for oxidizing antibiotics. There is a pressing need for inexpensive carbon catalysts of high quality. In this study, biochar (BC) modified by Fe, Mn and Fe@Mn was employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) in water. The surface of Fe@Mn BC had a dense, stalactite-like morphology comprising a square chassis that was elliptical. The catalyst Fe@Mn–BC possessed the optimal degradation effect (99%) on CBZ at 100 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and the quenching spectrum suggested that ˙O2− and 1O2 contributed to CBZ degradation.
In this work, a simple hydrothermal method was used to prepare a series of ZnO/r-GO (ZGO-x) catalysts. The obtained products were subjected to a series of characterizations, which showed that the zinc oxide particles were deposited onto r-GO and that the crystal structure was not disrupted. In addition, due to the large specific surface area and the good electrical conductivity of r-GO, more photogenerated electrons can be rapidly transferred from ZnO to r-GO to participate in the reaction, thus improving the photocatalytic performance. The degradation rate of the ZGO-3 sample reached 100% for RhB after simulated sunlight irradiation for 150 min, whereas the pure ZnO degraded RhB by about 83% under the same environment. ZGO-3 also showed the best photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange, with 100% degradation in 180 min, whereas pure ZnO degraded only 87.64% of methyl orange under solar irradiation.
In the process of using photocatalysts to treat tetracycline (TC) wastewater, the degradation efficiency of soybean powder carbon material (SPC) can be improved by loading it with cerium oxide (CeO2). In this study, firstly, SPC was modified by phytic acid. Then, the CeO2 was deposited on modified SPC using the self-assembly method. Catalyzed cerium (III) nitrate hexahydrate (CeH3NO4) was treated with alkali and calcined at 600 °C under nitrogen. XRD, XPS, SEM, EDS, UV-VIS /DRS, FTIR, PL and N2 adsorption–desorption methods were used to characterize the crystal structure, chemical composition, morphology, surface physical and chemical properties. The effects of catalyst dosage, monomer contrast, pH value and co-existing anions on TC oxidation degradation were investigated, and the reaction mechanism of a 600 Ce-SPC photocatalytic reaction system was discussed. The results show that the 600 Ce-SPC composite presents uneven gully morphology, which is similar to the natural “briquettes”. The degradation efficiency of 600 Ce-SPC reached about 99% at 60 min under light irradiation when the optimal catalyst dosage and pH were 20 mg and 7. Meanwhile, the reusability of the 600 Ce-SPC samples showed good stability and catalytic activity after four cycles.
