Designing chaotic systems with specific features is a hot topic in nonlinear dynamics. In this study, a novel chaotic system is presented with a unique feature of crossing inside and outside of a cylinder repeatedly. This new system is thoroughly analyzed by the help of the bifurcation diagram, Lyapunov exponents’ spectrum, and entropy measurement. Bifurcation analysis of the proposed system with two initiation methods reveals its multistability. As an engineering application, the system’s efficiency is tested in image encryption. The complexity of the chaotic attractor of the proposed system makes it a proper choice for encryption. States of the chaotic attractor are used to shuffle the rows and columns of the image, and then the shuffled image is XORed with the states of chaotic attractor. The unpredictability of the chaotic attractor makes the encryption method very safe. The performance of the encryption method is analyzed using the histogram, correlation coefficient, Shannon entropy, and encryption quality. The results show that the encryption method using the proposed chaotic system has reliable performance.
We study the synchronization properties of a generic networked dynamical system, and show that, under a suitable approximation, the transition to synchronization can be predicted with the only help of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the graph Laplacian matrix. The transition comes out to be made of a well defined sequence of events, each of which corresponds to a specific clustered state. The network’s nodes involved in each of the clusters can be identified, and the value of the coupling strength at which the events are taking place can be approximately ascertained. Finally, we present large-scale simulations which show the accuracy of the approximation made, and of our predictions in describing the synchronization transition of both synthetic and real-world large size networks, and we even report that the observed sequence of clusters is preserved in heterogeneous networks made of slightly non-identical systems.
Classical indicators of tipping points have limitations when they are applied to an ecological and a biological model. For example, they cannot correctly predict tipping points during a period-doubling route to chaos. To counter this limitation, we here try to modify four well-known indicators of tipping points, namely the autocorrelation function, the variance, the kurtosis, and the skewness. In particular, our proposed modification has two steps. First, the dynamic of the considered system is estimated using its time-series. Second, the original time-series is divided into some sub-time-series. In other words, we separate the time-series into different period-components. Then, the four different tipping point indicators are applied to the extracted sub-time-series. We test our approach on an ecological model that describes the logistic growth of populations and on an attention-deficit-disorder model. Both models show different tipping points in a period-doubling route to chaos, and our approach yields excellent results in predicting these tipping points.
Data security represents an essential task in the present day, in which chaotic models have an excellent role in designing modern cryptosystems. Here, a novel oscillator with chaotic dynamics is presented and its dynamical properties are investigated. Various properties of the oscillator, like equilibria, bifurcations, and Lyapunov exponents (LEs), are discussed. The designed system has a center point equilibrium and an interesting chaotic attractor. The existence of chaotic dynamics is proved by calculating Lyapunov exponents. The region of attraction for the chaotic attractor is investigated by plotting the basin of attraction. The oscillator has a chaotic attractor in which its basin is entangled with the center point. The complexity of the chaotic dynamic and its entangled basin of attraction make it a proper choice for image encryption. Using the effective properties of the chaotic oscillator, a method to construct pseudo-random numbers (PRNGs) is proposed, then utilizing the generated PRNG sequence for designing secure substitution boxes (S-boxes). Finally, a new image cryptosystem is presented using the proposed PRNG mechanism and the suggested S-box approach. The effectiveness of the suggested mechanisms is evaluated using several assessments, in which the outcomes show the characteristics of the presented mechanisms for reliable cryptographic applications.
