The evolution of emerging technologies that use Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Field (RF-EMF) has increased the interest of the scientific community and society regarding the possible adverse effects on human health and the environment. This article provides NextGEM’s vision to assure safety for EU citizens when employing existing and future EMF-based telecommunication technologies. This is accomplished by generating relevant knowledge that ascertains appropriate prevention and control/actuation actions regarding RF-EMF exposure in residential, public, and occupational settings. Fulfilling this vision, NextGEM commits to the need for a healthy living and working environment under safe RF-EMF exposure conditions that can be trusted by people and be in line with the regulations and laws developed by public authorities. NextGEM provides a framework for generating health-relevant scientific knowledge and data on new scenarios of exposure to RF-EMF in multiple frequency bands and developing and validating tools for evidence-based risk assessment. Finally, NextGEM’s Innovation and Knowledge Hub (NIKH) will offer a standardized way for European regulatory authorities and the scientific community to store and assess project outcomes and provide access to findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) data.

Botnets constitute nowadays one of the most dangerous security threats worldwide. High volumes of infected machines are controlled by a malicious entity and perform coordinated cyber-attacks. The problem will become even worse in the era of the Internet of Things (IoT) as the number of insecure devices is going to be exponentially increased. This paper presents WARDOG - an awareness and digital forensic system that informs the end-user of the botnet's infection, exposes the botnet infrastructure, and captures verifiable data that can be utilized in a court of law. The responsible authority gathers all information and automatically generates a unitary documentation for the case. The document contains undisputed forensic information, tracking all involved parties and their role in the attack. The deployed security mechanisms and the overall administration setting ensures non-repudiation of performed actions and enforces accountability. The provided properties are verified through theoretic analysis. In simulated environment, the effectiveness of the proposed solution, in mitigating the botnet operations, is also tested against real attack strategies that have been captured by the FORTHcert honeypots, overcoming state-of-the-art solutions. Moreover, a preliminary version is implemented in real computers and IoT devices, highlighting the low computational/communicational overheads of WARDOG in the field.
Over the last decade, there have been many changes in the field of political analysis at a global level. Through social networking platforms, millions of people have the opportunity to express their opinion and capture their thoughts at any time, leaving their digital footprint. As such, massive datasets are now available, which can be used by analysts to gain useful insights on the current political climate and identify political tendencies. In this paper, we present TwiFly, a framework built for analyzing Twitter data. TwiFly accepts a number of accounts to be monitored for a specific time-frame and visualizes in real time useful extracted information. As a proof of concept, we present the application of our platform to the most recent elections of Greece, gaining useful insights on the election results.
Secure and trustworthy data exchange across distributed data sources remains a major challenge in the health domain, where strict legal, regulatory, and privacy requirements must be satisfied. Data space technologies provide a promising approach to enabling interoperable and sovereign data sharing among diverse stakeholders while preserving data ownership and regulatory compliance. The NextGEM Innovation and Knowledge Hub (NIKH) was developed as a collaborative ecosystem for FAIR data access and evidence-based health risk assessment. This paper describes the NIKH Data Space (NIKH-DS), the underlying network provisioning platform within NIKH that enables secure data exchange in a health data space environment. The work outlines the key requirements, intended uses, and core implemented functionalities necessary for enabling secure network-provisioned data sharing among distributed data locations. Based on these requirements, a prototype architectural framework is proposed that integrates secure networking and interoperable services. The implementation of the individual components is described, including the data space controller, access control mechanisms, and a user-oriented dashboard that enables data visualization and interaction with distributed data sources. The NIKH-DS platform is validated through a set of case studies that demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the platform in supporting secure, interoperable, and Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR)-compliant health data sharing and risk assessment for the investigation of potential health effects of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF).
In the present era of sustainable innovation, the circular economy paradigm dictates the optimal use and exploitation of existing finite resources. At the same time, the transition to smart infrastructures requires considerable investment in capital, resources and people. In this work, we present a general machine learning approach for offering indoor location awareness without the need to invest in additional and specialised hardware. We explore use cases where visitors equipped with their smart phone would interact with the available WiFi infrastructure to estimate their location, since the indoor requirement poses a limitation to standard GPS solutions. Results have shown that the proposed approach achieves a less than 2m accuracy and the model is resilient even in the case where a substantial number of BSSIDs are dropped.
