As a crucial component in intelligent transportation systems, traffic flow prediction has recently attracted widespread research interest in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) with the increasing availability of massive traffic mobility data. Its key challenge lies in how to integrate diverse factors (such as temporal rules and spatial dependencies) to infer the evolution trend of traffic flow. To address this problem, we propose a unified neural network called Attentive Traffic Flow Machine (ATFM), which can effectively learn the spatial-temporal feature representations of traffic flow with an attention mechanism. In particular, our ATFM is composed of two progressive Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM [1]) units connected with a convolutional layer. Specifically, the first ConvLSTM unit takes normal traffic flow features as input and generates a hidden state at each time-step, which is further fed into the connected convolutional layer for spatial attention map inference. The second ConvLSTM unit aims at learning the dynamic spatial-temporal representations from the attentionally weighted traffic flow features. Further, we develop two deep learning frameworks based on ATFM to predict citywide short-term/long-term traffic flow by adaptively incorporating the sequential and periodic data as well as other external influences. Extensive experiments on two standard benchmarks well demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method for traffic flow prediction. Moreover, to verify the generalization of our method, we also apply the customized framework to forecast the passenger pickup/dropoff demands in traffic prediction and show its superior performance. Our code and data are available at https://github.com/liulingbo918/ATFM.

The performance of map matching has a significant effect on obtaining real‐time traffic information. The floating car data (FCD) is of low‐sampling rate, and urban road networks such as multi‐layer roads can be particularly complex. Most of the current low‐sampling‐rate map‐matching approaches use a fixed time interval, which can result in a lack of efficiency and accuracy if the initial point is not correctly matched. Moreover, the issue of handling data relating to multi‐layer road networks remains open. To address these issues, a new on‐line map‐matching framework is proposed, comprising the confidence point and the maximum delay constraint dynamic time window. The framework performs map matching by self‐adaptively choosing the appropriate timing and matching method according to the complexity of the local network to which the positioning point belongs. To distinguish elevated roads from normal roads, vehicle behaviour patterns on elevated roads are taken into account. Comparisons of the proposed algorithm, hidden Markov model algorithm, incremental algorithm and point‐to‐curve algorithm are conducted on two datasets. The empirical results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other algorithms. When the behaviour pattern on elevated roads is considered, the accuracy of these algorithms is also improved.

Travel time data is an important factor for evaluating the performance of a public transport system. In terms of time and space within the nature of uncertainty, bus travel time is dynamic and flexible. Since the change of traffic status is periodic, contagious or even sudden, the changing mechanism of that is a hidden mode. Therefore, bus travel time prediction is a challenging problem in intelligent transportation system (ITS). Allowing for a large amount of traffic data can be collected at present but lack of precisely-conducting, it is still worth exploring how to extract feature sets that can accurately predict bus travel time from these data. Hence, a feature extraction framework based on the deep learning models were developed to reflect the state of bus travel time. First, the study introduced different historical stages of bus signaling time, taxi speed, the stop identity (ID) of spatial characteristics, and real-time possible arrival time, signified by fourteen spatiotemporal characteristic values. Then, an embedding network is proposed to leverage a wide and deep structure to mate the spatial and temporal data. In order to meet the temporal dependence requirements, an attention mechanism for a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) was designed in this research in order to capture the temporal information. Finally, a Deep Neural Networks (DNN) was implemented in this research in order to achieve the dynamic bus travel time prediction. Two case studies of Guangzhou and Shenzhen were tested. The results showed that the performance of the algorithm was more efficient than that of the traditional machine-learning model and promoted by 4.82% compared to the deep neural network applied to the initial feature space. Moreover, the study visualized the weighted cost of attention on the bus’s travel time features during a certain running state. Therefore, the study demonstrated the proposed model enabled to understand the characteristic data of transit travel time with visualization.

Focusing on safety, comfort and with an overall aim of the comprehensive improvement of a vision-based intelligent vehicle, a novel Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) is proposed based on Nonlinear Model Predictive Algorithm. Considering the nonlinearities of vehicle dynamics, a vision-based longitudinal vehicle dynamics model is established. On account of the nonlinear coupling characteristics of the driver, surroundings, and vehicle itself, a hierarchical control structure is proposed to decouple and coordinate the system. To avoid or reduce the collision risk between the intelligent vehicle and collision objects, a coordinated cost function of tracking safety, comfort, and fuel economy is formulated. Based on the terminal constraints of stable tracking, a multi-objective optimization controller is proposed using the theory of non-linear model predictive control. To quickly and precisely track control target in a finite time, an electronic brake controller for AEBS is designed based on the Nonsingular Fast Terminal Sliding Mode (NFTSM) control theory. To validate the performance and advantages of the proposed algorithm, simulations are implemented. According to the simulation results, the proposed algorithm has better integrated performance in reducing the collision risk and improving the driving comfort and fuel economy of the smart car compared with the existing single AEBS.

Despite abundant accessible traffic data, researches on traffic flow estimation and optimization still face the dilemma of detailedness and integrity in the measurement. A dataset of city-scale vehicular continuous trajectories featuring the finest resolution and integrity, as known as the holographic traffic data, would be a breakthrough, for it could reproduce every detail of the traffic flow evolution and reveal the personal mobility pattern within the city. Due to the high coverage of Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) devices in Xuancheng city, we constructed one-month continuous trajectories of daily 80,000 vehicles in the city with accurate intersection passing time and no travel path estimation bias. With such holographic traffic data, it is possible to reproduce every detail of the traffic flow evolution. We presented a set of traffic flow data based on the holographic trajectories resampling, covering the whole city, including stationary average speed and flow data of 5-minute intervals and dynamic floating car data (FCD).
