Elevated prices and lack of proper legislation and government incentives have been the main barriers in the development of the photovoltaic market in Brazil. In an attempt to overcome those barriers, a microgrid model was proposed and simulated. In the proposed microgrids, residential consumers are connected to each other to maximize the investment return by trading the surplus of generated energy among them. Different topologies and scenarios were studied from electrical energy and economic standpoints. Stochastic data of solar radiation were simulated for the city of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil, for the period of one year, considering the statistical behavior of a series over 20 years. The system output power and energy balance were calculated considering a model for photovoltaic generators and the radiation simulated data. By determining the generated energy and electrical needs of the microgrid members, the cash flow and economic feasibility were calculated. Sensitivity analyses were performed by varying economic parameters to determine situations where investment becomes feasible. This paper shows that microgrid contributes to improve the economics and the initial investments. The number of participants in a microgrid, the electricity and the equipment costs are important parameters to speed up the economic and technical feasibility process.

The rapid growth of the world energy consumption and the need of reduce emissions of greenhouse gases have required the exploitation of renewable energy sources and the rational use of energy resources. Among the public initiatives to encourage the use of energy conservation measures is the Brazilian Labeling Program (PBE), which evaluates the energy efficiency of various products, including appliances, buildings and automobiles. The PBE considers several parameters to define the level of energy efficiency of buildings, including the exploitation of thermal and photovoltaic solar energy. It was verified that the PBE evaluates the generation of solar thermal energy in the classification of the level of energy efficiency of commercial, public, services and residential buildings, while the generation of solar photovoltaic is evaluated only in commercial, public and service buildings. The use of solar systems in buildings promotes obtaining better energy efficiency levels by PBE, but within certain limits. With a view: i) the high levels of solar radiation received in national territory, ii) the continuous reduction of cost of the solar technologies and iii) the creation of legal instruments that increase the economic viability of the use of renewable energy sources in Brazil, it is recommended that the PBE increases progressively the participation of parameters related to use of thermal and photovoltaic solar systems in energy efficiency labeling of buildings.

Increasing restrictions on the construction of new power plants lead the country to seek new sources to meet their energy needs. While developed countries promote the development of renewable energy sources, new natural gas and coal-fired power plants has been built in Brazil. These power plants operates with a high costs and affects the Brazilian electricity generation matrix, which is known as one of the cleanest in the world. Besides the high cost of operation, the usage fossil fuel contributes to the increase the population cases of health problems, mainly respiratory. In this work a comparative study between photovoltaic distributed generation and coal-fired power plants was conducted. Installation costs of photovoltaic systems were estimated to perform the economic analysis and the results were compared with the costs of a thermal plant. The PV system proves advantageous especially if health care costs associated with coal-fired power plants are taken into account.

Research for renewable energy sources has improved significantly and results can be found in the market based on the increase of industrial renewable sources. Photovoltaic solar energy offers a large field of study due to its important function as a sustainable energy supply, benefitting the environment, as well as social and economical aspects of energy systems, including increases in system reliability, lower greenhouse gas emissions and others. The rapid technological advance of photovoltaic technologies has contributed to reduced fabrication costs and efficiency increases of these systems, making them more economically viable. On the other hand, the insertion of distributed generation in energy systems is a great challenge. This is particularly true in Brazil, which possesses a highly centralized system and thus greater difficulty for managing energy sources of reduced size. For this purpose, new methodologies for simulation are required to support the planning and operation of a secure and reliable interconnected electrical system. This study displays the importance for utilization of a methodology for photovoltaic generation simulation based on forecasting of power generated using a stochastic treatment for solar radiation and its consequent use for the managers of electrical system.
