Cícero Beserra de Menezes is a researcher at Embrapa Maize and Sorghum, Brazil, where he leads research in grain sorghum breeding. He holds a degree in Agronomy (1997), an MSc in Genetics and Plant Breeding (1999), and a PhD in Agronomy–Plant Science (2003), all from the Federal University of Lavras, Brazil. During his doctoral studies, he completed a one-year research internship at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, USA.
From 2004 to 2010, he worked at Sakata Seed Sudamérica, coordinating the onion, carrot, and melon breeding programs. He joined Embrapa Maize and Sorghum in 2011. His main research interests include drought tolerance, resistance to diseases and the sugarcane aphid, development of elite parental lines and hybrids, nutrient-use efficiency, genomic approaches, and high-throughput phenotyping.
He served as president of the Brazilian Association of Maize and Sorghum (ABMS) from 2019 to 2024, contributing to major scientific events, including the Brazilian Maize and Sorghum Congress and the National Off-Season Maize Seminar. He has also served as an editor of the Brazilian Journal of Maize and Sorghum.
More recently, he spent one year as a visiting scientist at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, conducting research on high-throughput phenotyping and digital image-based plant evaluation to identify traits associated with stress tolerance in sorghum.
