Biography

I have 40 years of experience in orthopedic research with a focus on surgical and postmortem retrieval studies of implants for hip, knee, and shoulder joint reconstructive surgery and associated periprosthetic tissues. I manage the collection of retrieved implants at Rush University Medical Center and lead the postmortem retrieval team. I have been involved in numerous studies of wear and corrosion and currently am working on several studies of corrosion modes of modular junctions and the effects the resulting wear and corrosion products have locally on the tissues surrounding the joint and systemically on the body. My areas of expertise include the histological evaluation of the tissues surrounding failed joint replacements using light microscopy, and the isolation of particles within periprosthetic tissue and organs for study by backscattered electron scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). I also perform SEM/EDS analysis of wear and corrosion damage on retrieved modular implant devices as well as SEM imaging of biofilms on total joint implants. Other areas of expertise include the analysis of osseointegration into porous coated joint replacement components and new bone formation into bone defects treated with bone graft materials, using light and electron microscopy. Our laboratory is one of a handful that routinely prepares undecalcified plastic embedded histology for the analysis of the bone-implant interface.
