Félix Machín studied Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of La Laguna (1990-1995), winning the prize to the most outstanding graduate of that year. In 2001, he got a PhD in the same university. From 2001 to 2005 he was a postdoctoral fellow at MRC/Imperial College in London, working in the group headed by Dr Luis Aragón. In 2005, he obtained a Ramon y Cajal research contract and returned to Tenerife to head his own group at Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, where he has been working since. He has been continuously funded by competitive national research grants. He has worked with yeasts throughout his entire career, and on chromosome structure and segregation in the budding yeast since 2001. He and his group have dealt with anaphase regulation, the structural and segregation challenges of the ribosomal DNA array (rDNA), the roles of Cdc14 and Top2 in anaphase, and the consequences of undertaking erroneous anaphases for the cell progeny and long-term genome stability. Besides, he has worked in molecular pharmacology and toxicology since 2006, when he started collaborating with chemists in biological evaluation of compounds. He has published >50 peer-reviewed research articles, being corresponding author in more than half. He has supervised in full 7 doctoral thesis and 12 master theses, is an inventor in 3 patents, advises and collaborates with local biotech companies, and oversees both microscopy and cytometry facilities at the research centre.
