Very high resolution (VHR) remote sensing imagery has been used for land cover classification, and it tends to a transition from land-use classification to pixel-level semantic segmentation. Inspired by the recent success of deep learning and the filter method in computer vision, this work provides a segmentation model, which designs an image segmentation neural network based on the deep residual networks and uses a guided filter to extract buildings in remote sensing imagery. Our method includes the following steps: first, the VHR remote sensing imagery is preprocessed and some hand-crafted features are calculated. Second, a designed deep network architecture is trained with the urban district remote sensing image to extract buildings at the pixel level. Third, a guided filter is employed to optimize the classification map produced by deep learning; at the same time, some salt-and-pepper noise is removed. Experimental results based on the Vaihingen and Potsdam datasets demonstrate that our method, which benefits from neural networks and guided filtering, achieves a higher overall accuracy when compared with other machine learning and deep learning methods. The method proposed shows outstanding performance in terms of the building extraction from diversified objects in the urban district.

The road network plays an important role in the modern traffic system; as development occurs, the road structure changes frequently. Owing to the advancements in the field of high-resolution remote sensing, and the success of semantic segmentation success using deep learning in computer version, extracting the road network from high-resolution remote sensing imagery is becoming increasingly popular, and has become a new tool to update the geospatial database. Considering that the training dataset of the deep convolutional neural network will be clipped to a fixed size, which lead to the roads run through each sample, and that different kinds of road types have different widths, this work provides a segmentation model that was designed based on densely connected convolutional networks (DenseNet) and introduces the local and global attention units. The aim of this work is to propose a novel road extraction method that can efficiently extract the road network from remote sensing imagery with local and global information. A dataset from Google Earth was used to validate the method, and experiments showed that the proposed deep convolutional neural network can extract the road network accurately and effectively. This method also achieves a harmonic mean of precision and recall higher than other machine learning and deep learning methods.

Semantic segmentation of high-resolution remote sensing images plays an important role in applications for building extraction. However, the current algorithms have some semantic information extraction limitations, and these can lead to poor segmentation results. To extract buildings with high accuracy, we propose a multiloss neural network based on attention. The designed network, based on U-Net, can improve the sensitivity of the model by the attention block and suppress the background influence of irrelevant feature areas. To improve the ability of the model, a multiloss approach is proposed during training the network. The experimental results show that the proposed model offers great improvement over other state-of-the-art methods. For the public Inria Aerial Image Labeling dataset, the F1 score reached 76.96% and showed good performance on the Aerial Imagery for Roof Segmentation dataset.

Building extraction from very high resolution (VHR) imagery plays an important role in urban planning, disaster management, navigation, updating geographic databases, and several other geospatial applications. Compared with the traditional building extraction approaches, deep learning networks have recently shown outstanding performance in this task by using both high-level and low-level feature maps. However, it is difficult to utilize different level features rationally with the present deep learning networks. To tackle this problem, a novel network based on DenseNets and the attention mechanism was proposed, called the dense-attention network (DAN). The DAN contains an encoder part and a decoder part which are separately composed of lightweight DenseNets and a spatial attention fusion module. The proposed encoder–decoder architecture can strengthen feature propagation and effectively bring higher-level feature information to suppress the low-level feature and noises. Experimental results based on public international society for photogrammetry and remote sensing (ISPRS) datasets with only red–green–blue (RGB) images demonstrated that the proposed DAN achieved a higher score (96.16% overall accuracy (OA), 92.56% F1 score, 90.56% mean intersection over union (MIOU), less training and response time and higher-quality value) when compared with other deep learning methods.

Recent advances in deep-learning methods have shown extraordinary performance in road extraction from high resolution satellite imagery. However, most existing deep-learning network models yield discontinuous and incomplete results because of shadows and occlusions. To address this problem, a dual-attention road extraction network (DA-RoadNet) with a certain semantic reasoning ability is proposed. First, DA-RoadNet is designed based on a shallow encoder-to-decoder network with densely connected blocks, which can minimize the loss of road structure information caused by multiple down-sampling operations. Moreover, by constructing a novel attention mechanism module, the proposed network is able to explore and integrate the invisible correlations among road features with their global dependency in spatial and channel dimension respectively. Finally, considering that the proportion of road samples is small in the satellite imagery, a hybrid loss function is appended to handle class imbalance, which enables the network model to train stablely and avoid local optimum. The validation experiments using two open road datasets demonstrate that the proposed DA-RoadNet can effectively solve discontinuous problems and preserve integrity of the extracted roads, thus resulting in a higher accuracy of road extraction compared with other developed state-of-the-arts. The considerable performance on the two challenging benchmarks also proves the powerful generation ability of our method.

Mangroves play an important role in many aspects of ecosystem services. Mangroves should be accurately extracted from remote sensing imagery to dynamically map and monitor the mangrove distribution area. However, popular mangrove extraction methods, such as the object-oriented method, still have some defects for remote sensing imagery, such as being low-intelligence, time-consuming, and laborious. A pixel classification model inspired by deep learning technology was proposed to solve these problems. Three modules in the proposed model were designed to improve the model performance. A multiscale context embedding module was designed to extract multiscale context information. Location information was restored by the global attention module, and the boundary of the feature map was optimized by the boundary fitting unit. Remote sensing imagery and mangrove distribution ground truth labels obtained through visual interpretation were applied to build the dataset. Then, the dataset was used to train deep convolutional neural network (CNN) for extracting the mangrove. Finally, comparative experiments were conducted to prove the potential for mangrove extraction. We selected the Sentinel-2A remote sensing data acquired on 13 April 2018 in Hainan Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve in China to conduct a group of experiments. After processing, the data exhibited 2093 × 2214 pixels, and a mangrove extraction dataset was generated. The dataset was made from Sentinel-2A satellite, which includes five original bands, namely R, G, B, NIR, and SWIR-1, and six multispectral indices, namely normalization difference vegetation index (NDVI), modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI), forest discrimination index (FDI), wetland forest index (WFI), mangrove discrimination index (MDI), and the first principal component (PCA1). The dataset has a total of 6400 images. Experimental results based on datasets show that the overall accuracy of the trained mangrove extraction network reaches 97.48%. Our method benefits from CNN and achieves a more accurate intersection and union ratio than other machine learning and pixel classification methods by analysis. The designed model global attention module, multiscale context embedding, and boundary fitting unit are helpful for mangrove extraction.
