The Talnakh deposit is one of the largest PGE-Cu-Ni deposits in the world. It is located inside the North-Western part of the Siberian Trap province and consists of three branches. The problem of massive ore origins has been discussed for several decades. The structure of the South-Western branch and the mineralogy of related its Cu-rich ore are discussed in this article. The Southern-2 orebody has a deep inclination (45°) inside the intrusive body, close to its wall, in contrary to the horizontal orebodies of the North-Eastern branch. Mineral composition of the Southern-2 orebody differs from the composition the other orebodies of the Talnakh intrusion as well. It consists ofchalcopyrite, pentlandite with subordinate cubanite, and pyrrhotite. Its specific feature is a large amount of bornite and chalcocite. These minerals occur in disseminated and massive ores. The ores of the other branches of the Talnakh intrusion have chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite compositions whilethe Southern-2 massive ore is enriched in Cu (19.03–25.8 wt %; Cu/Ni = 3.8–8.6) and PGE: ΣPGE changes from 39.1 to 279 ppm, Pd/Pt = 1.3–32. Twelve minerals of the systems Pd-Sn-Cu, Pd-Pb-Bi, Pd-Ni-As, Au-Ag-Pd-Cu, and intermetallics of the Pt-Fe-Cu-Ni types were discovered in ores, but are also widespread in other orebodies. Isoferroplatinum, sperrilite and cooperitewere not found. The unusual structure and composition of the Southern-2 orebody suggest its origin from a separate magma impulse. The correlation between disseminated and massive ores of the Southern 2 orebody in term of chemical and mineralogical composition is evidence of the formation of massive oresin situ, without displacement along the bottom of the massif.

The Gaching high-sulfidation (HS) epithermal Au–Ag deposits, part of the Maletoyvayam ore field, which is located in the volcanic belts of the Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia). The main ore components are native gold, tellurides, selenides, and sulphoselenotellurides of Au and oxidation products of Au-tellurides. This study examines the different types of native gold in this ore deposit and the mechanisms and sequential transformation of calaverite (AuTe2) into mustard gold. The primary high fineness gold (964‰–978‰) intergrown with maletoyvayamite Au3Te6Se4 and other unnamed phases (AuSe, Au(Te,Se)) differ from the secondary (mustard) gold in terms of fineness (1000‰) and texture. Primary gold is homogeneous, whereas mustard is spongy. Two types of mustard gold were identified: (a) Mixtures of Fe-Sb(Te,Se,S) oxides and fine gold particles, which formed during the hypogenic transformation stage of calaverite due to the impact of hydrothermal fluids, and (b) spotted and colloform gold consisting of aggregates of gold particles in a goethite/hydrogoethite matrix. This formed during the hypergenic transformation stage. Selenides and sulphoselenotellurides of gold did not undergo oxidation. Pseudomorphic replacement of calaverite by Au-Sb(Te,Se,S,As) oxides was also observed.

The results of studying the epithermal deposits of Kamchatka, one of the most promising gold-mining provinces of the Russian Federation, are generalized. The deposits are divided into acid–sulfate (Ac-Sul) and adularia–sericite (Ad-Ser) types (Heald et al., 1987). The disadvantages of the scheme, which is the most popular in the English-language literature and is based on the sulfidation state of mineral parageneses in ores (LS, IS, and HS types), are shown. The classification that we proposed includes differences in mineral associations in circum–ore metasomatites, which are determined by the acidity–alkalinity and an oxidation state of mineral-forming fluids, and are clearly diagnosed at the first stages of studying the deposits. Kamchatka epithermal deposits of the Ad-Ser-type are associated with andesite volcanism of the volcanic belts. Gold ore associations are concentrated in quartz, carbonate–quartz, and adularia–quartz veins, as well as in sericitized metasomatites, which are replaced by argillizites and propylites towards the periphery. The Ad-Ser-type is characterized by combination with polysulfide (Pb, Zn) (Amethyst, Kumroch, Vilyuchinskoe deposits), sulfosalt (Ag, Sb, As, Bi, Sn) (Ozernovskoe, Baranyevskoe), and selenide (Ag, Se) (Amethyst, Asachinskoe, Rodnikovoe) assemblages. Low-fineness native gold (220–310‰) is typical of the early polysulfide assemblage. With an increase in the fugacity of Te and Se, the gold fineness increases to 510–740‰, and with the progressive activity of Sb, As and Bi and the formation of sulfosalt associations, it reaches 998‰. The homogenization temperatures of primary fluid inclusions in quartz from gold-bearing associations of the Ad-Ser-type are 260–250°C; the minerals crystallize from solutions containing no more than 3 wt % NaCl eq. Maletoyvayam, the only Ac-Sul-type deposit in Kamchatka, is localized in quartz, secondary quartzites, and alunite–sericite–kaolinite–quartz metasomatites. Gold-bearing parageneses indicate the leading role of selenium in mineral formation, contain high-fineness native gold, sulfoselenotellurides, tellurides, and selenides of Au, which crystallize from acidic fluids with salinity of 1–5 wt % NaCl eq. at temperatures of 290–175°C.

Microthermometry study of fluid inclusions in quartz veins of the Maletoyvayam deposit (Koryak Highland, Russia) was carried out. This epithermal gold deposit contains unique Au compounds including maletoyvayamite, which has not been reported anywhere else. Two paragenetic mineral associations (pyrite-quartz and maletoyvayamite-quartz) with quartz of different generations corresponding to different pulses were also described. Only early generations of quartz (Q1) include ore minerals: pyrite for the first mineral assemblage, and in Au-bearing minerals, sulfosalts, bismuthinite, and others—for the second assemblage. A study on fluid inclusions in quartz showed a salinity (mainly NaCl + KCl) range from 0.2 to 4.3 wt.% NaCl eq., increasing from the first mineral association to the second due to boiling fluids. The obtained temperature variations for quartz crystallization were 295–135 °C, the fluid pressure ranged from 79 to 4 bar. On the other hand, the range of conditions obtained for the gold productive ore association is more narrow: salinity of the fluid inclusions is 4.3 wt.% NaCl eq., the temperatures vary from 255 °C to 245 °C, and the pressure from 39 to 32 bar. These physicochemical characteristics of the Maletoyvayam ore deposit greatly coincide with other HS-type epithermal deposits; however, within the Central Kamchatka Volcanic Belt it is so far the only deposit of this type reported.

We present here new data on the low-sulfide mineralisation in the upper endocontact of the Noril'sk 1 intrusion. Twenty four mineral species of platinum-group elements and their solid solutions, as well as numerous unnamed phases, including an Sb analogue of vincentite, As and Sn analogues of mertieite-I and a Sn analogue of mertieite-II have been found. It is shown that the features of the mineral association: (1) the atypical trend of TiO2and Fe2+in chromian spinel; (2) the composition of the Pt–Fe alloys with a Fe/Fe + Pt range of 0.26–0.37 (logfO2≈ – (9–10); and (3) crystallisation of high-temperature sperrylite from silicate melt (at >800°C and logfS2< –10.5), which is possible underfO2of FMQ to FMQ-2 in mafic magma, are due to the reducing conditions of their formation and evolution. Droplet-like inclusions of silicate-oxide minerals in сhromian spinels and sulfides in platinum-group minerals are interpreted to be trapped droplets of co-existing sulfide melt. The captured sulfide melt has evolved in the direction of increasing the fugacity of sulfur: troilite + pentlandite (Fe>Ni) – in sperrylite (paragenesis I) to monoclinic pyrrhotite + pentlandite (Ni≈Fe) + chalcopyrite – in Pt–Fe alloys (paragenesis II). Paragenesis from the sulfide aggregates in the silicate matrix are more fractionated: pyrrhotite + pyrrhotite (Ni>Fe) + chalcopyrite (III) and pyrite + pentlandite (Ni>>Fe) + millerite (IV). Pd arsenides and antimonides crystallised later than sperrylite and isoferroplatinum, as a result of the evolution of a sulfide melt with an increased activity of the element ligands (Te, Sn, Sb and As).
