Biography

Research Biography: Natan Straathof has expertise in the field of organic chemistry, photoredox catalysis, methods development. After graduating with a Bachelor in Applied Sciences, he entered the University of Leiden in 2009 to pursue a Master in Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Hermen Overkleeft and Prof. Gijs van der Marel. Subsequently, he moved to Eindhoven University of Technology to secure his doctorate under the supervision of Prof. Timothy Noël and Prof. Volker Hessel. The research described in his PhD focuses on novel synthetic methodologies, including trifluoromethylations and perfluoroalkylations applying visible light photoredox catalysis, and the translation of these novel methodologies to continuous-flow microreactors. After his PhD, he got the opportunity to work in the group of Prof. Veronique Gouverneur at the University of Oxford. Here he was part of an international collaboration between Oxford and UCB Pharma, and was responsible for the development of novel 18F-fluoination techniques for clinically relevant targets within the umbrella of UCB Pharma. After this, he moved to Denmark and started in the group of Dr. Andreas Jensen at the Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU). Here is works on the development of a novel therapy to combat glioblastoma brain cancer. His main interests involve the development of new methodologies employing metal- and organo-catalysis, and their application in complex synthesis and molecular editing.
