Sebastià Alcover, a biologist from the University of Barcelona, conducted his undergraduate thesis, optimizing the CRISPR technique in zebrafish and becoming the first in his faculty to generate eukaryotic-chimeras using this approach. He subsequently pursued a master's degree in Integrative Physiology, completing his thesis at the Research Institute of Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, where he developed a rapid and cost-effective diagnostic method for dysferlinopathy.
Currently, he is a PhD candidate in biomedicine at the University of Barcelona under the supervision of Dr. Gemma Vilahur. Now in the fourth year of his thesis, his research focuses on cardioprotective treatments in animal models. He has developed an ischemia/reperfusion model in rats with diabetic cardiomyopathy and evaluated the efficacy of intravenous atorvastatin, obtaining significant results that are soon to be published. Additionally, he has investigated the cardioprotective effects of eicosapentaenoic acid in a hypertriglyceridemia model, yielding promising results with the goal of translating them into a preclinical model.
Over the years, Sebastián has presented his findings at various international conferences: EuroThrombosis & EuroVessels 2022 in Portugal, 1st IMPACT COST in Trieste, 57th ESCI in Prague, 58th ESCI in Barcelona. He has also contributed to the group’s scientific publications in journals such as Cells, American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, and ESCI
