U.Kanders' scientific activity began in the early 1970 and continues to this day. His scientific interests have included solid-state physics, low-temperature plasma physics, including the physical vapor deposition technique. The last time interests concerned nanoscience and nanotechnology. During the aforementioned period, he has supervised the development of doctoral theses in solid-state physics and its successful defense. His main places of work have been the University of Latvia and Riga Technical University.
