In this article, an integrated object detection and communication (IODC) system based on single-stage detection framework is first proposed for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in underwater environment. Specifically, the combination of the multiscale feature extraction module and semantic information enhance fusion module for SAR images in underwater environment is designed as the semantic encoder and the results prediction module with anchor-free detection method is designed as the semantic decoder. Considering the multiscale feature, the channel encoder composed by a multiscale fusion module and a redundancy module is designed, and the channel decoder is the inverse of the channel encoder. To adapt to the time-varying and complex wireless environment, an adaptive transmission (AT) mechanism based on attention mechanism and knowledge base is proposed for the IODC system. Moreover, considering the actual application requirements, a lightweight design for the IODC system with the AT mechanism is also conducted. The experiment results on the Sonar Common Target Detection dataset show that the proposed IODC system with AT mechanism can achieve nearly 91% average precision at 25 dB, which means the proposed system can achieve the effective integration of the objection detection and communication for SAR images in underwater environment. In the lightweight design, the model parameters of the proposed system can be reduced by up to 20%, with only a 2.22% sacrifice in performance.

Underwater object detection with Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) images faces many problems, including low contrast, blurred edges, high-frequency noise, and missed small objects. To improve these problems, this paper proposes a high-accuracy underwater object detection algorithm for SAS images, named the HAUOD algorithm. First, considering SAS image characteristics, a sonar preprocessing module is designed to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of object features. This module incorporates three-stage processing for image quality optimization, and the three stages include collaborative adaptive Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) enhancement, non-local mean denoising, and frequency-domain band-pass filtering. Subsequently, a novel C2fD module is introduced to replace the original C2f module to strengthen perception capabilities for low-contrast objects and edge-blurred regions. The proposed C2fD module integrates spatial differential feature extraction, dynamic feature fusion, and Enhanced Efficient Channel Attention (Enhanced ECA). Furthermore, an underwater multi-scale contextual attention mechanism, named UWA, is introduced to enhance the model’s discriminative ability for multi-scale objects and complex backgrounds. The proposed UWA module combines noise suppression, hierarchical dilated convolution groups, and dual-dimensional attention collaboration. Experiments on the Sonar Common object Detection dataset (SCTD) demonstrate that the proposed HAUOD algorithm achieves superior performance in small object detection accuracy and multi-scenario robustness, attaining a detection accuracy of 95.1%, which is 8.3% higher than the baseline model (YOLOv8n). Compared with YOLOv8s, the proposed HAUOD algorithm can achieve 6.2% higher accuracy with only 50.4% model size, and reduce the computational complexity by half. Moreover, the HAUOD method exhibits significant advantages in balancing computational efficiency and accuracy compared to mainstream detection models.

The effectiveness of the SAR object detection technique based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) has been widely proven, and it is increasingly used in the recognition of ship targets. Recently, efforts have been made to integrate transformer structures into SAR detectors to achieve improved target localization. However, existing methods rarely design the transformer itself as a detector, failing to fully leverage the long-range modeling advantages of self-attention. Furthermore, there has been limited research into multi-class SAR target detection. To address these limitations, this study proposes a SAR detector named CCDN-DETR, which builds upon the framework of the detection transformer (DETR). To adapt to the multiscale characteristics of SAR data, cross-scale encoders were introduced to facilitate comprehensive information modeling and fusion across different scales. Simultaneously, we optimized the query selection scheme for the input decoder layers, employing IOU loss to assist in initializing object queries more effectively. Additionally, we introduced constrained contrastive denoising training at the decoder layers to enhance the model’s convergence speed and improve the detection of different categories of SAR targets. In the benchmark evaluation on a joint dataset composed of SSDD, HRSID, and SAR-AIRcraft datasets, CCDN-DETR achieves a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 91.9%. Furthermore, it demonstrates significant competitiveness with 83.7% mAP on the multi-class MSAR dataset compared to CNN-based models.

In this letter, a joint shuffled scheduling decoding algorithm for double-protograph low-density parity-check (DP-LDPC) codes-based joint source-channel coding (JSCC) schemes is presented. The proposed algorithm adopts the shuffled scheduling method to both source decoder and channel decoder, and can improve convergence speed and reduce the decoding complexity. In addition, a unique phenomenon named unequal convergence rates is revealed at the same time. The proposed algorithm can terminate this phenomenon with faster decoding. The results show that this algorithm has faster convergence speed and better error performance, compared with the traditional joint belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm.

With the development of the marine economy, video surveillance has become an important technical guarantee in the fields of marine engineering, marine public safety, marine supervision, and maritime traffic safety. In video surveillance, maritime object detection (MOD) is one of the most important core technologies. Affected by the size of maritime objects, distance, day and night weather, and changes in sea conditions, MOD faces challenges such as false detection, missed detection, slow detection speed, and low accuracy. However, the existing object detection algorithms usually adopt predefined anchor boxes to search and locate for objects of interest, making it difficult to adapt to maritime objects’ complex features, including the varying scale and large aspect ratio difference. Therefore, this paper proposes a maritime object detection algorithm based on the improved convolutional neural network (CNN). Firstly, a differential-evolutionary-based K-means (DK-means) anchor box clustering algorithm is proposed to obtain adaptive anchor boxes to satisfy the maritime object characteristics. Secondly, an adaptive spatial feature fusion (ASFF) module is added in the neck network to enhance multi-scale feature fusion. Finally, focal loss and efficient intersection over union (IoU) loss are adopted to replace the original loss function to improve the network convergence speed. The experimental results on the Singapore maritime dataset show that our proposed algorithm improves the average precision by 7.1%, achieving 72.7%, with a detection speed of 113 frames per second, compared with You Only Look Once v5 small (YOLOv5s). Moreover, compared to other counterparts, it can achieve a better speed–accuracy balance, which is superior and feasible for the complex maritime environment.

In actual traffic scenarios, the environment is complex and constantly changing, with many vehicles that have substantial similarities, posing significant challenges to vehicle tracking research based on deep learning. To address these challenges, this article investigates the application of the DeepSORT (simple online and realtime tracking with a deep association metric) multitarget tracking algorithm in vehicle tracking. Due to the strong dependence of the DeepSORT algorithm on target detection, a YOLOv5s_DSC vehicle detection algorithm based on the YOLOv5s algorithm is proposed, which provides accurate and fast vehicle detection data to the DeepSORT algorithm. Compared to YOLOv5s, YOLOv5s_DSC has no more than a 1% difference in optimal mAP0.5 (mean average precision), precision rate, and recall rate, while reducing the number of parameters by 23.5%, the amount of computation by 32.3%, the size of the weight file by 20%, and increasing the average processing speed of each image by 18.8%. After integrating the DeepSORT algorithm, the processing speed of YOLOv5s_DSC + DeepSORT reaches up to 25 FPS, and the system exhibits better robustness to occlusion.
