Solid waste management (SWM) is one of the key responsibilities of city administrators and one of the effective proxies for good governance. Effective SWM mitigates adverse health and environmental impacts, conserves resources, and improves the livability of cities. However, unsustainable SWM practices, exacerbated by rapid urbanization and financial and institutional limitations, negatively impact public health and environmental sustainability. This review article assesses the human and environmental health impacts of SWM practices in the Global South cities that are the future of global urbanization. The study employs desktop research methodology based on in-depth analysis of secondary data and literature, including official documents and published articles. It finds that the commonplace SWM practices include mixing household and commercial garbage with hazardous waste during storage and handling. While waste storage is largely in old or poorly managed facilities such as storage containers, the transportation system is often deficient and informal. The disposal methods are predominantly via uncontrolled dumping, open-air incinerators, and landfills. The negative impacts of such practices include air and water pollution, land degradation, emissions of methane and hazardous leachate, and climate change. These impacts impose significant environmental and public health costs on residents with marginalized social groups mostly affected. The paper concludes with recommendations for mitigating the public and environmental health risks associated with the existing SWM practices in the Global South.

This study focuses on highlighting the major effects on the agricultural activities caused by the reduction in water resources in Najran, Saudi Arabia. Since the last decade, there has been a sharp decrease in the availability of water in the area as reported by many researchers due to urban sprawl, excessive groundwater extraction causing a decrease in land fertility, and destruction of soil structure. The water resources of the area and the agricultural heritage is endangered, and also the environmental, economic, and social impact of these actions can be severe if such activities continue in the future. The purpose of the study is to obtain detailed information regarding the major causes of water depletion in the Najran Valley as per the opinion of the residents. A survey questionnaire was designed with a high level of flexibility, covering the key issues including causes of groundwater depletion, factors that affected agricultural activities and irrigation practices and the environmental impact of the Najran Dam, and the risks of floods related to it. An overwhelming response was received from the people of the area. Significant results were obtained from the analysis, and the major effects and causes were highlighted as conclusions. The study shall help the city planners and policymakers in identifying the major causes of water depletion and the actual needs of the residents in order to manage the water resources of the area efficiently. Understanding the public opinion on the issues discussed in this study shall provide a base to develop management options for water resources problems suited to local contexts that fits the need of the community.

This research assesses the involvement of green urban spaces in creating social interaction among the residents of a neighborhood. It emphasizes the significance of urban parks, particularly in the context of Saudi Arabia’s New Vision 2030, and showcases the proactive approach of Jubail Industrial City in planning and distributing parks. The study delves into the legibility of parks, exploring factors that impact user experiences, including accessibility and amenities. It highlights how park design can influence social interactions. Furthermore, the research underscores the importance of social interaction within neighborhood parks, especially among diverse cultural and age groups. The results prove to be a significant output for future use in enhancing the quality of green spaces and providing efficient means of social interaction among people. The study’s findings, such as increased social interaction with diverse amenities and improved safety perceptions, contribute to sustainable urban planning by fostering social cohesion, enhancing ecological benefits through tree cover, and building community resilience, aligning with Vision 2030’s sustainability goals. Recommendations are provided to improve the park user experience and promote increased utilization of neighborhood parks.

Despite the importance of integrated recreation cities (IRC) to the wellbeing of individuals, families, and society, there is only one IRC which is under development in Saudi Arabia (KSA). This research aims to study the potential contributions of IRCs to sustainable development in KSA, the constraints facing them, and effectuation policies to support their applications. To achieve this goal, the research used a documentary inductive approach, which includes a review of related literature and an applied approach that includes field surveys of a random sample of 160 experts and officials. In addition to articulating the most significant contributions of IRCs and the most important constraints facing them, the research was able to provide a number of policies and measures useful in guiding the development of new IRCs in KSA and Dammam Metropolitan Area (DMA) in support of sustainable development. The contributions of this research are aligned with that put forward by the 2030 Vision of KSA, which considers the promotion of “recreational development” a necessary step to achieve environmental, economic, and social sustainability for the Saudi society.

As global urbanization accelerates in ecologically fragile regions, Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) have emerged as a critical paradigm for integrating environmental sustainability with urban resilience. Particularly in hyper-arid environments, the deployment of NBS must navigate unique climatic, hydrological, and socio-political complexities. This paper advances a conceptual framework that synthesizes the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) tripartite typology—protection, sustainable management, and restoration/creation—within a broader systems-oriented governance lens. By engaging with international precedents and context-specific urban dynamics, the study explores how adaptive, multiscale strategies can translate ecological principles into actionable urban design and planning practices. Through a comparative lens and grounded regional inquiry, the research identifies critical leverage points and institutional enablers necessary to operationalize NBS under desert constraints. While highlighting both the structural potential and the contextual limitations of existing initiatives in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, the analysis underscores the necessity of coupling typological coherence with flexible regulatory and participatory mechanisms. Empirical findings from the Saudi case reveal persistent institutional fragmentation, heavy reliance on top-down implementation, and limited hydrological monitoring as key constraints, while also pointing to emerging governance mechanisms under Vision 2030—such as cross-sectoral coordination and pilot participatory frameworks—that can support the long-term viability of NBS in hyper-arid cities. Building on these insights, the study distills a set of strategic lessons that provide clear guidance on hydrological integration, adaptive governance, and socio-cultural legitimacy, offering a practical roadmap for operationalizing NBS in desert urban contexts.
