The paper discusses the research methods and the most important results of the interdisciplinary project “The Former Gestapo Headquarters and the Provincial Office of Public Security in Anstadt Avenue in Łódź. Interdisciplinary Site Research” conducted in 2019–2021. Considering the challenges faced by the archaeology of the contemporary past, a subdiscipline of archaeology, an attempt was made to link the results of archaeological research to the relatively well-known historical context of structural and functional transformations of the site explored, mostly the establishment of a Jewish school in Anstadt Avenue at the end of the 1930s, the operation of the Gestapo headquarters during the Second World War and of the communist Provincial Office of Public Security after the war, and the division of the site into police and school sections in 1957, which has been preserved to date. Also ethnographic research was carried out, which identified sources referring to the forms of remembrance and commemoration of places, events, and people. The Authors hope that the archaeological research will be soon resumed on account of the planned investments, allowing to publish a complementary and interdisciplinary monograph of the site explored.

The interdisciplinary research project “Lexicon of Katyn Archaeology (1990–2015)” aims to collect formerly dispersed material relating to research that was undertaken during the 1990s and early 2000s on traces of the Katyn Massacre of 1940, in which Soviet forces killed 22,000 Polish officers who were prisoners in the USSR. An important part of the project comprises ethnographic interviews with researchers and participants in archaeological work that took place at execution and burial sites. These interviews make it possible to reconstruct the course of the research and to identify significant aspects that sometimes escape historical studies, archaeological reports and analytical scientific texts, but that emerge from a biographical, personal and emotional context. The project also involves interviews with people whose biographies, experiences and memories are connected with the Katyn Massacre. These reveal the reception of the archaeological research by those with the most personal interest in it, as well as what is recorded in individual experience and family memory. They also indicate practised and postulated forms of commemoration.

The paper discusses an interdisciplinary research project (2014–2016) concerning the industrial heritage of Łódź, as exemplified by the former Monopol Wódczany, which is today converted for the purposes of new, cultural and service functions. The aim of ethnographic and archaeological activities was to collect oral histories and artefacts, which not only documented the history of the factory, but also presented the professional biographies of its workers, meaning people whose lives had been intertwined with the activity of the company. Thanks to such a research assumption, the researchers were able to reconstruct the industrial past of the place based on memories, artefacts collected, and archive surveys. The Author describes the idea behind the project, its methodology and results, using the notions of industrial heritage and urban narratives as the analytical context.
