Image-text retrieval is a fundamental and vital task in multi-media retrieval and has received growing attention since it connects heterogeneous data. Previous methods that perform well on image-text retrieval mainly focus on the interaction between image regions and text words. But these approaches lack joint exploration of characteristics and contexts of regions and words, which will cause semantic confusion of similar objects and loss of contextual understanding. To address these issues, a dual-level representation enhancement network (DREN) is proposed to strength the characteristic and contextual representations by innovative block-level and instance-level representation enhancement modules, respectively. The block-level module focuses on mining the potential relations between multiple blocks within each instance representation, while the instance-level module concentrates on learning the contextual relations between different instances. To facilitate the accurate matching of image-text pairs, we propose the graph correlation inference and weighted adaptive filtering to conduct the local and global matching between image-text pairs. Extensive experiments on two challenging datasets (i.e., Flickr30K and MSCOCO) verify the superiority of our method for image-text retrieval.

Multimodal emotion recognition in conversations (ERC) aims to identify the emotional state of constituent utterances expressed by multiple speakers in dialogue from multimodal data. Existing multimodal ERC approaches focus on modeling the global context of the dialogue and neglect to mine the characteristic information from the corresponding utterances expressed by the same speaker. Additionally, information from different modalities exhibits commonality and diversity for emotional expression. The commonality and diversity of multimodal information are compensated for each other but not effectively exploited in previous multimodal ERC works. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel Multimodal Adversarial Learning Network (MALN). MALN first mines the speaker’s characteristics from context sequences and then incorporate them with the unimodal features. Afterward, we design a novel adversarial module AMDM to exploit both commonality and diversity from the unimodal features. Finally, AMDM fuses different modalities to generate refined utterance representations for emotion classification. Extensive experiments are conducted on two public multimodal ERC datasets, IEMOCAP and MELD. Through the experiments, MALN shows its superiority over the state-of-the-art methods.

Image and text matching plays a crucial role in bridging the cross-modal gap between vision and language, and has achieved great progress due to the deep learning. However, the existing methods still suffer from the long-tail problem, where only a small proportion contains highly frequent semantics and a long tail proportion is constructed by rare semantics. In this paper, we propose a novel Dual-path Rare Content Enhancement Network (DRCE) to tackle the long-tail issue. Specifically, the Cross-modal Representation Enhancement (CRE) and Cross-modal Association Enhancement (CAE) are proposed to construct dual-path structure to enhance rare content representation and association with the benefit of cross-modal prior knowledge. This structure can effectively exploit the complementary cross-modal relation from different aspects and fuse these information in an adaptively manner by the proposed Adaptive Fusion Strategy (AFS). Moreover, we also propose an alternative re-ranking strategy (ARR) to explore the reciprocal contextual information to refine image-text matching results, which can further suppress the negative effect of long-tail effect. Extensive experiments on two large-scale datasets show the significant improvements and validate the superiority of our method.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has been widely used in ophthalmology in recent years due to its noninvasive and high resolution. In OCTA images, two biomarkers are extremely important for clinical diagnosis, i.e., foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and retinal vessel (RV), and RV has an implicit constraint on FAZ in position. In previous studies, the segmentation of the two biomarkers is naturally separated, which undoubtedly leads to the omission of such constraints between them. In this article, we propose a joint segmentation framework ( Joint-Seg ), a single-encoder and dual-decoder architecture, through which simultaneous FAZ and RV extractions from en-face OCTA images can be achieved. Specifically, the OCTA image is encoded through joint encoding and provides FAZ- or RV-related information to separate decoding branches through a feature adaptive filter (FAF). In the FAZ segmentation branch, we propose a feature alignment decoder block (FADB) to recover image details, especially boundaries. While in the RV segmentation branch, a multiscale soft fusion module (MSFM) is designed to adapt to different vessel thicknesses. Finally, we evaluate the proposed Joint-Seg on the OCTA-500 dataset, and the experimental results show that our Joint-Seg outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on both FAZ and RV segmentations and has fewer floating point operations (FLOPs) and parameters. The generalization experiments on four other datasets, i.e., OCTAGON, sFAZ, OCTA-25K, and ROSE, also demonstrate the portability and scalability of the proposed Joint-Seg framework. In addition, the noise analysis further shows good robustness of the proposed method against noise.

Image and sentence matching is a critical task to bridge the visual and textual discrepancy due to the heterogeneous modalities. Great progress has been made by exploring the coarse-grained relationships between images and sentences or fine-grained relationships between regions and words. However, how to fully excavate and exploit corresponding relations between these two modalities is still challenging. In this work, we propose a novel Multi-scale Fine-grained Alignments Network (MFA), which can effectively explore multi-scale visual-textual correspondences to facilitate bridging cross-modal discrepancy. Specifically, word-scale matching module is firstly utilized to mine the basic but fundamental correspondences between single word and independent region. Then, we propose a phrase-scale matching module to explore the relations between object with the constraint of attribute and corresponding region, which can further reserve more associated information. To cope with the complex interactions among multiple phrases and images, we design the relation-scale matching module to capture high-order semantics between two modalities. Moreover, each matching module includes visual aggregation and textual aggregation, which can ensure the bi-directional coupling of multi-scale semantics. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments on two challenging datasets including Flickr30K and MSCOCO, show that the proposed method achieves superior performance compared with the existing methods.

Image-text retrieval, as a fundamental task in the cross-modal field, aims to explore the relationship between visual and textual modalities. Recent methods address this task only by learning the conceptual and syntactical correspondences between cross-modal fragments, but these correspondences inevitably contain noise without considering external knowledge. To solve this issue, we propose a novel C ommonsense-Guided S emantic and R elational C onsistencies (CSRC) for image-text retrieval that can simultaneously expand the semantics and relations to reduce the cross-modal differences under the assumption that the semantics and relations of the true image-text pair should be consistent between two modalities. Specifically, we first explore commonsense knowledge to expand the specific concepts for visual and textual graphs and optimize the semantic consistency by minimizing the differences in cross-modal semantic importance. Then, we extend the same relations for cross-modal concept pairs with semantic consistency, which serves to implement relational consistency. After that, we combine external commonsense knowledge with internal correlation to enhance concept representation and further optimize relational consistency by regularizing the importance differences between association-enhanced concepts. Extensive experimental results on two popular image-text retrieval datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.
