An early evaluation in terms of circuit design is essential in order to assess the feasibility and practicability aspects for emerging nanotechnologies. Reconfigurable nanotechnologies, such as silicon or germanium nanowire-based reconfigurable field-effect transistors, hold great promise as suitable primitives for enabling multiple functionalities per computational unit. However, contemporary CMOS circuit designs when applied directly with this emerging nanotechnology often result in suboptimal designs. For example, 31% and 71% larger area was obtained for our two exemplary designs. Hence, new approaches delivering tailored circuit designs are needed to truly tap the exciting feature set of these reconfigurable nanotechnologies. To this effect, we propose six functionally enhanced logic gates based on a reconfigurable nanowire technology and employ these logic gates in efficient circuit designs. We carry out a detailed comparative study for a reconfigurable multifunctional circuit, which shows better normalized circuit delay (20.14%), area (32.40%), and activity as the power metric (40%) while exhibiting similar functionality as compared with the CMOS reference design. We further propose a novel design for a 1-bit arithmetic logic unit-based on silicon nanowire reconfigurable FETs with the area, normalized circuit delay, and activity gains of 30%, 34%, and 36%, respectively, as compared with the contemporary CMOS version.

Contemporary hardware implementations of artificial neural networks face the burden of excess area requirement due to resource-intensive elements such as multiplier and non-linear activation functions. The present work addresses this challenge by proposing a resource-efficient Co-ordinate Rotation Digital Computer (CORDIC)-based neuron architecture (RECON) which can be configured to compute both multiply-accumulate (MAC) and non-linear activation function (AF) operations. The CORDIC-based architecture uses linear and trigonometric relationships to realize MAC and AF operations respectively. The proposed design is synthesized and verified at 45nm technology using Cadence Virtuoso for all physical parameters. Implementation of the signed fixed-point 8-bit MAC using our design, shows 60% less area, latency, and power product (ALP) and shows improvement by 38% in area, 27% in power dissipation, and 15% in latency with respect to the state-of-the-art MAC design. Further, Monte-Carlo simulations for process-variations and device-mismatch are performed for both the proposed model and the state-of-the-art to evaluate expectations of functions of randomness in dynamic power variation. The dynamic power variation for our design shows that worst-case mean is $189.73\mu W$ which is 63% of the state-of-the-art.

Emerging nanotechnologies based reconfigurable field-effect transistors (RFETs) allow switching between p-type and n-type behavior at runtime upon application of different bias potentials. While prior works have mainly focused on security schemes using RFETs, here we revisit the underlying security promises, and furthermore, showcase certain circuit vulnerabilities which can lead to adversarial scenarios. More specifically, first, we explore how transistor-level reconfigurability can be leveraged for logic locking and split manufacturing in the pretext of RFET-based modeling of the ITC-99 circuits. We find that with only 30% reconfigurable logic gates, we can induce 100% output error rate (OER) and 31% Hamming distance(HD) on split-manufacturing schemes. Second, which is arguably more disruptive, we explore how the very reconfigurability can be exploited to induce either short-circuit or open-circuit configurations, essentially destroying the reliability, electrical, or functional characteristics of the chip. By means of fault modeling for such exploitation, 100% OER (across all benchmarks) as well as 36.5%, 40.02%, and 6.34% HD, respectively, can be expected for the MCNC, EPFL, and ITC-99 benchmarks. The novelty and severity of such disruptive scenario lies in the fact that they can be readily realized in an actual on-field RFET-based chip, either as an adversarial or a fail-safe measure.

Logic synthesis is a fundamental step in hardware design whose goal is to find structural representations of Boolean functions while minimizing delay and area. If the function is completely-specified, the implementation accurately represents the function. If the function is incompletely-specified, the implementation has to be true only on the care set. While most of the algorithms in logic synthesis rely on SAT and Boolean methods to exactly implement the care set, we investigate learning in logic synthesis, attempting to trade exactness for generalization. This work is directly related to machine learning where the care set is the training set and the implementation is expected to generalize on a validation set. We present learning incompletely-specified functions based on the results of a competition conducted at IWLS 2020. The goal of the competition was to implement 100 functions given by a set of care minterms for training, while testing the implementation using a set of validation minterms sampled from the same function. We make this benchmark suite available and offer a detailed comparative analysis of the different approaches to learning.

The ever-increasing demand for low-power and area-efficient circuits for use in battery-powered devices and the CMOS scaling problems have attracted the attention of VLSI designers to beyond-CMOS technologies like Reconfigurable Field-Effect Transistors (RFETs). Improving the efficiency of multipliers is critical as the core component of many applications such as image processing and Machine Learning (ML). This paper proposes a compact and energy-efficient RFET-based architecture for the 4:2 compressor and Dadda multiplier, leveraging transistor-level reconfigurability and multi-input support of the RFET. Moreover, we propose a novel approximate 4:2 compressor based on efficient RFET logic cells to cater to the needs of error-resilient applications. Extensive circuit-level simulations with 14nm germanium nanowire (GeNW) RFET technology show that the proposed RFET-based exact multiplier improves the power consumption and power-delay product (PDP) by 65% and 45%, respectively, compared to the conventional CMOS-based counterpart in 14nm FinFET technology. Besides, we show that utilizing the proposed approximate compressor, the area and PDP of the multiplier reduce by 46% and 42%. The effectiveness of the approximate multiplier is evaluated in the image multiplication, and the average PSNR and SSIM values are 31.39 and 0.87, respectively.

Reconfigurable Field Effect Transistors can be electrostatically programmed to p- or n-type behavior. This device level reconfigurability is a promising way to enhance the functionality of digital circuits. Here, we present a Verilog-A based Germanium nanowire table model for the analysis of dynamically reconfigurable logic gates. The model is based on TCAD simulations of a nanowire transistor design with feature sizes compatible to a 14nm FinFET process. To showcase that our model enables digital circuit design for reconfigurable operation, performance and power consumption estimations for basic static as well as reconfigurable logic cells are given. Performance improvements over Silicon nanowire based designs are predicted, making Germanium RFETs a promising candidate for future co-integration into standard CMOS processes.
