Biography

C. Drouet is a CNRS Senior Scientist, leader of the Phosphates, Pharmacotechnics, and Biomaterials group of the CIRIMAT laboratory (2016‒2020) at the University of Toulouse, France. PhD in Materials Sciences. Major research fields include the physico-chemistry and thermochemistry of natural or synthetic (bio)minerals and their characterization and surface reactivity. Key milestones include 3 years as a Research Associate in Prof. A. Navrotsky’s group at the University of California at Davis (UCDavis), USA, and other stays including in Prof. J. L.G. Fierro’s group at the University of Madrid, Spain. A special focus in C. Drouet’s research relates to calcium phosphates and related compounds, including biomimetic nanocrystalline apatites analogous to bone minerals, in view of innovative bio-medical applications (bone repair and nanomedicine). He and Prof. C. Rey contributed to the development of the “hydrated layer model” on the surface of apatite nanocrystals, to cold sintering approaches to consolidate metastable calcium phosphates, and developed colloidal apatite-based nanoparticles for nanomedicine. On (bio)material thermodynamics, C. Drouet developed the ThermAP free software to estimate the thermodynamic properties of complex oxides (e.g. substituted apatites). C. Drouet received two international awards, namely the honorary Racquel Legeros Award in June 2013 and the ISCM Excellence Award in 2016, for his contribution to the field of calcium phosphates research.
