We theoretically proposed and numerically analyzed a polarization-independent, wide-angle, and ultra-broadband absorber based on a multi-layer metasurface. The numerical simulation results showed that the average absorption rates were more than 97.2% covering the broad wavelength of 400~6000 nm (from visible light to mid-infrared light) and an absorption peak was 99.99%, whatever the polarization angle was changed from 0° to 90°. Also, as the incidence angle was swept from 0° to 55°, the absorption performance had no apparent change over the wavelength ranges of 400 to 6000 nm. We proved that the proposed metasurface structure was obviously advantageous to achieve impedance matching between the absorber and the free space as compared with conventionally continuous planar-film structures. The broadband and high absorption resulted from the strong localized surface plasmon resonance and superposition of resonant frequencies. As expectable the proposed absorber structure will hold great potential in plasmonic light harvesting, photodetector applications, thermal emitters and infrared cloaking.

We theoretically proposed an ultra-broadband infrared light absorber and demonstrated that a high absorption could be obtained in the range of ultra-broadband infrared light using the iron thin layers. The simulation results showed that the proposed absorber could achieve a close-to-unity absorption rate across a wide infrared spectral range, and that the average absorption rate would reach 90.6% over the range of 1.4-11.4μm. The high absorption rate resulted from the excitation of strong localized surface plasmon resonance in the iron layers and the superposition of different resonance frequencies. Numerical analysis results demonstrated that our proposed absorber had a broader efficient absorption range than most previously reported broadband infrared light absorbers.

The nanosphere lithography (NSL) method can be developed to deposit the Au-Ag triangle hexagonal nanoparticle arrays for the generation of localized surface plasmon resonance. Previously, we have found that the parameters used to form the NSL masks and the physical methods required to deposit the Au-Ag thin films had large effects on the geometry properties of the nanoparticle arrays. Considering this, the different parameters used to grow the Au-Ag triangle hexagonal nanoparticle arrays were investigated. A single‐layer NSL mask was formed by using self‐assembly nano-scale polystyrene (PS) nanospheres with an average radius of 265 nm. At first, the concentration of the nano-scale PS nanospheres in the solution was set at 6 wt %. Two coating methods, drop-coating and spin-coating, were used to coat the nano-scale PS nanospheres as a single‐layer NSL mask. From the observations of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), we found that the matrixes of the PS nanosphere masks fabricated by using the drop-coating method were more uniform and exhibited a smaller gap than those fabricated by the spin-coating method. Next, the drop-coating method was used to form the single‐layer NSL mask and the concentration of nano-scale PS nanospheres in a solution that was changed from 4 to 10 wt %, for further study. The SEM images showed that when the concentrations of PS nanospheres in the solution were 6 and 8 wt %, the matrixes of the PS nanosphere masks were more uniform than those of 4 and 10 wt %. The effects of the one-side lifting angle of substrates and the vaporization temperature for the solvent of one-layer self-assembly PS nanosphere thin films, were also investigated. Finally, the concentration of the nano-scale PS nanospheres in the solution was set at 8 wt % to form the PS nanosphere masks by the drop-coating method. Three different physical deposition methods, including thermal evaporation, radio-frequency magnetron sputtering, and e-gun deposition, were used to deposit the Au-Ag triangle hexagonal periodic nanoparticle arrays. The SEM images showed that as the single-layer PS nanosphere mask was well controlled, the thermal evaporation could deposit the Au-Ag triangle hexagonal nanoparticle arrays with a higher quality than the other two methods.

As solar energy is a low-cost and clean energy source, there has been a great deal of interest in how to harvest it. To absorb solar energy efficiently, we designed a broadband metamaterial absorber based on the principle of Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavities and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). We propose a broadband perfect absorber consisting of a four-layer structure of silica–tungsten–silica–titanium (SiO2–W–SiO2–Ti) for the incident light wavelength range of 300–2500 nm. The structure achieves perfect absorption of incident light in the wavelength range of 351.8–2465.0 nm (absorption > 90%), with an average absorption of 96.3%. The advantage of our proposed structure is that it combines the characteristics of both high and broadband absorption, and has high overall absorption efficiency for solar radiation. It is also independent of polarization and insensitive to incident angle. We investigated how absorption was affected by different structures, materials, geometric parameters, and refractive indices for different dielectric materials, and we explored the reasons for high absorption. This structure is refractory and ultrathin, and it offers a good tradeoff between bandwidth and absorption. It therefore has premium application prospects and value.

In this study, the nanosphere lithography (NSL) method was used to fabricate hybrid Au-Ag triangular periodic nanoparticle arrays. The Au-Ag triangular periodic arrays were grown on different substrates, and the effect of the refractive index of substrates on fabrication and optical properties was systematically investigated. At first, the optical spectrum was simulated by the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) numerical method as a function of refractive indexes of substrates and mediums. Simulation results showed that as the substrates had the refractive indexes of 1.43 (quartz) and 1.68 (SF5 glass), the nanoparticle arrays would have better refractive index sensitivity (RIS) and figure of merit (FOM). Simulation results also showed that the peak wavelength of the extinction spectra had a red shift when the medium’s refractive index n increased. The experimental results also demonstrated that when refractive indexes of substrates were 1.43 and 1.68, the nanoparticle arrays and substrate had better adhesive ability. Meanwhile, we found the nanoparticles formed a large-scale monolayer array with the hexagonally close-packed structure. Finally, the hybrid Au-Ag triangular nanoparticle arrays were fabricated on quartz and SF5 glass substrates and their experiment extinction spectra were compared with the simulated results.

Gantry cranes play a critical role in accelerating the shipment process at container ports. The complex operational environments of ports heighten the necessity for monitoring key parameters of gantry cranes in order to monitor the operational conditions and prevent safety issues. To overcome the limitations of conventional sensors in ports, an optical fiber sensing (OFS) system integrated with distributed temperature sensing (DTS), distributed vibration sensing (DVS), and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technologies was proposed. This system was used for real-time online monitoring of two gantry cranes (aged and recently deployed, respectively) for comparison. Temperature fields of crane power cables were constructed, and temperature variations were rapidly captured by DTS during on-site experiments. Vibration characteristics of the crane girder were extracted using DVS under artificial interference. The operating states of gantry cranes were identified through the analysis of vibration distribution maps. Besides, the temperature, acceleration and stress concentration of the critical components were monitored accurately by FBGs. This study presented novel insights into the condition monitoring of gantry cranes via OFS, and predicted the potential to prevent unexpected failures, enhance the safety and efficiency, and extend the lifespan of gantry cranes.
