Information

I completed my doctoral studies in 1990 at the Faculty of Biology (UCM) training in the biochemistry of the physiology of lichens. Later, I worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the CSIC, first in the Department of Instrumental Analysis and Environmental Chemistry of theIQOG and a second year in the Department of Biocatalysis of the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemicals. In 1992 I joined Dr. Chi-Huey Wong's Group at The Scripps Research Institut (La Jolla, CA) as a postdoctoral fellow, where I specialized in obtaining and using enzymes for carbohydrate synthesis. After my return to Spain in 1995, I obtained the position of Senior Scientist at the CSIC, joining IQOG in 1997. In 2009 I was promoted to Scientific Researcher. My research is focused on obtaining new enzymes for use as highly selective catalysts. Some of the research topics that are currently being developed in my laboratory are: Design of new multi-enzyme systems and multifunctional enzymes for carbohydrate synthesis, with special emphasis on the formation of C-C bonds catalyzed by DHAP-dependent aldolases and regioselective sulphation of oligosaccharides. Use of protein engineering techniques to obtain biocatalysts with new activities and better biotechnological properties. I have supervised 5 Ph. D. Thesis and 13 Master Degree. I have combined my scientific work with management tasks, and I have been Director of the IQOG-CSIC from November 2010 to March 2019.
