One of the important factors in enhancing the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is reactor design and configuration. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the regressors and their operating parameters affecting the double anode chamber–designed dual-chamber microbial fuel cell (DAC-DCMFC) performance. Its primary design consists of two anode chamber compartments equipped with a separator and cathode chamber. The DAC-DCMFCs were parallelly operated over 8 days (60 days after the acclimation period). They were intermittently pump-fed with the different organic loading rates (OLRs), using chemically enriched sucrose as artificial wastewater. The applied OLRs were adjusted at low, medium, and high ranges from 0.4 kg.m−3.d−1 to 2.5 kg.m−3.d−1. The reactor types were type 1 and type 2 with different cathode materials. The pH, temperature, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), optical density 600 (OD600), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon (TOC) were measured, using standard analytical instruments. In general, the power production achieved a maximum of 866 ± 44 mW/m2, with a volumetric power density of 5.15 ± 0.26 W/m3 and coulombic efficiency of 84%. Two-stage COD and TOC removal at medium OLR achieved a range of 60–80%. Medium OLR is the recommended level to enhance power production and organic removal in DAC-DCMFC. The separated anode chambers into two parts in a dual anode chamber microbial fuel cell adjusted by various organic loadings expressed a preferable comprehension in the integrated MFCs for wastewater treatment.

In this article, a theoretical approach is focusing on the use of mixed plants to remediate polluted environmental media. Essential conditions should be performed, particularly in supporting plant growth, the safety factor for consumers and the use of amendments in improving the efficiency of phytoremediation. In general, it takes more than one type of the plant to be more effective in restoring a polluted environment. For this purpose, the selected plant species mus synergistically eliminate the types of pollutants present in the environmental media. Thus, the mixed plants process becomes very effective in removing many of the pollutants on site. In practice, mixed plants operations could be selected from one or a combination of simultaneous, sequential or alternating patterns, all of which must be adapted to polluted media conditions.

The existence of waste is one of the problems faced by the community, including in the college of higher education. Waste is produced not only from personal consumption, but also from other activities including office operations and research activities in laboratories and other personal activities. This condition is also related to increasing the existing activities on the campus of Universitas Diponegoro UNDIP, resulting in increasing waste. Related to this UNDIP gives serious attention to develop integrated waste management system. It is also related to the desire of UNDIP to be a sustainable university, where the principles of greenmetrics are always applied in the management of the environment. This article provides an overview of the curent practices of waste management at UNDIP’s campus.

The Garang River functions as a flood controller and a source of raw water for drinking water. This river is divided into seven segments, and in the downstream segment VI there is intake of raw water for drinking water. The land use is dominated by built-in land, in the form of dense settlements and industrial estates. This study aims to evaluate the condition of the drainage system, both in terms of runoff and water quality, and apply the concept of LID to achieve a sustainable drainage system. The method used is the SWMM. Evaluations were carried out in three outlets. In existing conditions, channel capacity in general is still sufficient, while water quality does not meet effluent standard quality for observed parameters including TSS, BOD, COD, oil & fat parameters and Total coliform. The LID concept that are suitable are Bio retention cell, Permeable Pavement and Rooftop disconnection. The use of this type of LID is significant enough to reduce runoff by 77% at outlet 1, 98% at outlet 2 and 73% at outlet 3 and decrease in some parameters of water quality by 77% to 100%.

This research is conducted to analyze and determine the optimum of COD concentration containing leaves litter, canteen and composite waste to power density and COD removal efficiency as the indicator of SMFC performance. COD as the one of organic matter parameters perform as substrate, nutrient and dominating the whole process of SMFC. Leaves litter and canteen based food waste were obtained from TPST UNDIP in Semarang and treated in SMFC reactor. Its reactor was designed 2 liter volume and equipped by homemade graphene electrodes that were utilized at the surface of organic waste as cathode and in a half of reactor height as anode. COD concentration was initially characterized and became variations of initial COD concentration. Waste volume was maintained 2/3 of volume of reactor. Bacteria sources as the important process factor in SMFC were obtained from river sediment which contain bacteroides and exoelectrogenic bacteria. Temperature and pH were not maintained while power density and COD concentration were periodically observed and measured during 44 days. The results showed that power density up to 4 mW/m2 and COD removal efficiency performance up to 70% were reached by leaves litter, canteen and composite waste at days 11 up to days 44 days. Leaves litter contain 16,567 mg COD/l providing higher COD removal efficiency reached approximately 87.67%, more stable power density reached approximately 4.71 mW/m2, and faster optimum time in the third day than canteen based food waste and composite waste. High COD removal efficiency has not yet resulted in high power density.
