The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of two types of nutritional supplementation during late gestation on the chemical composition, energy value, and IgG concentration in the colostrum and the IgG concentration in the blood serum of lambs. Pregnant Merino Precoz ewes (n = 36) carrying single fetuses were used. Animals were kept grazing on the Mediterranean annual grassland. From day ~90 of pregnancy, animals were allocated into three groups: daily supplementation with oat grain or lupine grain and a control group without supplementation. Immediately after parturition, colostrum was collected from each ewe, and a blood sample was taken from the lambs 24 h after birth. For the evaluation of the chemical composition of the colostrum, an EKOMILK® milk analyzer was used. The energy value of the colostrum was calorimetrically evaluated. IgG concentrations were measured by simple radial immunodiffusion. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance. Colostrum content of protein and non-fat solids was higher in the group supplemented with oat grain than in the lupine grain supplemented and control groups (p ≤ 0.05). In contrast, ewes supplemented with lupine grain had the highest concentration of fat in their colostrum (p ≤ 0.05). Oat grain supplementation resulted in higher concentrations of IgG, both in sheep colostrum and in the blood serum of their lambs (p ≤ 0.05), being higher than those observed in the lupine grain and control groups. Ewes that gave birth to male lambs had significantly higher concentrations of IgG in their colostrum compared to ewes that gave birth to females (p ≤ 0.05). The colostral IgG concentration positively correlated with the serum IgG concentration of the lambs (r = 0.32; p ≤ 0.05). The results indicate that the quality of colostrum and the immunological status of the newborn lambs can be improved by supplementation with oat grain.
This study evaluated the productivity, nutritional composition, amino acid profile, fatty acid profile and presence of Salmonella spp. of housefly larva meal reared on domestic animal manure. A study was conducted to produce larva on three types of manure in a controlled environment located at 3200 mASL. Adult flies used as brood stock were reared in advance to avoid contamination with pathogenic germs and were fed sugar syrup and pasteurized milk to promote oviposition. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, the Kruskal–Wallis test and descriptive statistics, using confidence intervals. The results indicate that the type of organic substrate had an effect on the time of development, weight, size and percentage mortality of larva, being higher in a mixture of swine manure and poultry manure. Regarding nutritional composition, it was determined that larva meals contain 56.5% crude protein, 13.07% fat, 12.03% carbohydrates, 10.93% ash and 6.77% crude fiber. The most abundant fatty acids are palmitic acid with 29.34%, palmitoleic acid with 21.65% and oleic acid with 26.53%. An adequate balance of amino acids was determined, highlighting among them the content of arginine and threonine within the essential amino acids. House fly larva meals contain an adequate balance of nutrients and can be used as an ingredient for animal feed formulation. However, their use in animals should be further evaluated in future studies to assess their viability, absorption, bioavailability, and potential allergic reactions.

This research was conducted to determine the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of dog bite cases treated at the Guillermo Díaz de la Vega Regional Hospital in Abancay, during 2017-2023. A total of 744 bite records were evaluated. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Comparisons between variables were performed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of 5%. The frequency of dog bites decreased significantly in 2020 and 2021. Bites were more frequent in adults aged 39-59 years (30%), males (58%), and residents of the city of Abancay (77%). The largest proportion of injuries occurred on the lower extremities (40%), with single (66%) and deep (53%) wounds. Seventy percent of the dogs responsible for the bites were known to the victims.
