Prof. Isam Shahrour is a distinguished professor at Lille University (France) and a member of the French Water Academy. He is actively involved in research and higher education and has established partnerships with stakeholders in the socioeconomic sector. He served as Vice President of Research and Innovation at Lille 1 University (2007–2012) and Director of the Regional Research Laboratory “Civil and Geo-Environment Engineering” (with around 200 members, including 90 PhD students) (2010–2019). Since January 2011, he has coordinated an important smart city project named “SunRise: a large-scale demonstrator of the smart and sustainable city”, which involves extensive collaboration with local government, water, energy, and information technology providers, and startups. His research focuses mainly on smart and sustainable cities, the sustainable management of natural resources, and geo-environmental engineering. He has published approximately 120 papers in referenced journals, supervised around 90 PhD dissertations, and secured more than EUR 5 million in funding through industrial and public contracts. He has delivered more than 30 lectures on topics related to cities, sustainable cities, smart cities, and resilient cities, including two TEDx talks.
