Radio tomographic imaging (RTI) has emerged as a promising device-free localization technology for locating the targets with no devices attached. RTI deduces the location information from the reconstructed attenuation image characterizing target-induced spatial loss of radio frequency measurements in the sensing area. In cluttered indoor environments, RF measurements of wireless links are corrupted by multipath effects and thus less robust to achieve a high localization accuracy for RTI. This paper proposes to improve the quality of measurements by using spatial diversity. The key insight is that, with multiple antennae equipped, due to small-scale multipath fading, RF measurement variation of each antenna pair behaves differently. Therefore, spatial diversity can provide more reliable and strong measurements in terms of link quality. Moreover, to estimate the location from the image more precisely and make the image more identifiable, we propose using a new reconstruction regularization linearly combining the sparsity and correlation inherent in the image. The proposed reconstruction method can remarkably reduce the image noise and enhance the imaging accuracy especially in the case of a few available measurements. Indoor experimental results demonstrate that compared to existing RTI improvement methods, our RTI solution can reduce the root-mean-square localization error at least 47% while also improving the imaging performance.

Received-signal-strength-based (RSS-based) device-free localization (DFL) is a promising technique since it is able to localize the person without attaching any electronic device. This technology requires measuring the RSS of all links in the network constituted by several radio frequency (RF) sensors. It is an energy-intensive task, especially when the RF sensors work in traditional work mode, in which the sensors directly send raw RSS measurements of all links to a base station (BS). The traditional work mode is unfavorable for the power constrained RF sensors because the amount of data delivery increases dramatically as the number of sensors grows. In this paper, we propose a binary work mode in which RF sensors send the link states instead of raw RSS measurements to the BS, which remarkably reduces the amount of data delivery. Moreover, we develop two localization methods for the binary work mode which corresponds to stationary and moving target, respectively. The first localization method is formulated based on grid-based maximum likelihood (GML), which is able to achieve global optimum with low online computational complexity. The second localization method, however, uses particle filter (PF) to track the target when constant snapshots of link stats are available. Real experiments in two different kinds of environments were conducted to evaluate the proposed methods. Experimental results show that the localization and tracking performance under the binary work mode is comparable to the those in traditional work mode while the energy efficiency improves considerably.

In this article, we present systematic design methods and experimental verifications of a 220-GHz quasi-optical cryogenic Schottky subharmonic mixer. To maximize device performance over a wide bandwidth and overcome the difficulties in conjugate matching designs, an impedance optimization-based cooperative design method is proposed for such quasi-optical mixer that includes the on-chip antenna and heterodyne mixing circuit. A coplanar waveguide (CPW) tuning network is utilized and optimized to offset the parasitic reactance effect of Schottky diodes. Besides, a dual-band log-periodic-slot integrated lens antenna is presented for coupling the radio frequency and local oscillator radiations with high efficiency. A reversed field tracing method is proposed to acquire the position and size of the equivalent Gaussian waists at both frequencies, thus offering the guidance for optimizing the substrate thickness and lens dimensions for improved antenna gain and radiation pattern. A 220-GHz quasi-optical mixer prototype was fabricated and experimentally verified at both room and cryogenic temperatures. At 134 K, the single-sideband noise factor and the conversion loss are around 4.2–8.5 and 6–11 dB over a wide intermediate-frequency bandwidth of 0.5–20 GHz, showing the superior device performance at the comparable bands.

In the field of medical imaging, microwave tomography (MWT) is based on the scattering and absorption characteristics of different tissues to microwaves and can reconstruct the electromagnetic property distribution of biological tissues non-invasively and without ionizing radiation. However, due to the inherently nonlinear and ill-posed characteristics of MWT calculations, actual imaging is prone to overfitting or artifacts. To address this, this paper proposes a two-step iterative imaging approach for rapid medical microwave tomography. This method establishes corresponding objective functions for microwave imaging across multiple frequencies and conducts iterative calculations on images at varying resolutions. This effectively enhances image clarity and accuracy while alleviating the issue of prolonged computational time associated with imaging complex structures at high resolution due to insufficient prior information during iterative processes. In the electromagnetic simulation section, we simulated a three-layer brain model and conducted imaging experiments. The results demonstrate that the algorithm significantly enhances imaging resolution, accurately pinpointing cerebral hemorrhages at different locations using an eight-antenna array and successfully reconstructs tomography images with a hemorrhage area radius of 1 cm. Lastly, experiments were conducted using a medical microwave tomography platform and four simplified human brain models, achieving millimeter-level accuracy in MWT.

This paper presents systematic modeling and performance analyses of a 340-GHz dual-polarized antenna-coupled single-sideband (SSB) high-Tc superconducting (HTS) mixer for terahertz (THz) communication systems. The mixer features a fully monolithic-integrated circuit layout, which enables both sensitive heterodyne detection and high image rejection by appropriate polarization-manipulating operation. To predict the comprehensive performance of such a HTS mixer with relatively complicated network architecture and polarization relationships, an innovative modified three-port modeling approach is presented and developed by theoretical derivations. Using the measured Josephson junction parameters of our previous experimentally demonstrated HTS mixer module at the same band, the best conversion gain and SSB noise temperature of the presented mixer are predicted to be around −5 dB and 1200 K at the operating temperature of 40 K, respectively. In addition, the mixer exhibits a flat frequency response over a wide intermediate-frequency range from 15 to 25 GHz and high image rejection of more than 17 dB over the radio frequency operation range. The SSB HTS Josephson mixer will be useful for THz wireless communication applications.
