The Internet of Things (IoT) being a promising technology of the future is expected to connect billions of devices. The increased number of communication is expected to generate mountains of data and the security of data can be a threat. The devices in the architecture are essentially smaller in size and low powered. Conventional encryption algorithms are generally computationally expensive due to their complexity and requires many rounds to encrypt, essentially wasting the constrained energy of the gadgets. Less complex algorithm, however, may compromise the desired integrity. In this paper we propose a lightweight encryption algorithm named as Secure IoT (SIT). It is a 64-bit block cipher and requires 64-bit key to encrypt the data. The architecture of the algorithm is a mixture of feistel and a uniform substitution-permutation network. Simulations result shows the algorithm provides substantial security in just five encryption rounds. The hardware implementation of the algorithm is done on a low cost 8-bit micro-controller and the results of code size, memory utilization and encryption/decryption execution cycles are compared with benchmark encryption algo-rithms. The MATLAB code for relevant simulations is available online at https://goo.gl/Uw7E0W.

Species living in extremely cold environments resist the freezing conditions through antifreeze proteins (AFPs). Apart from being essential proteins for various organisms living in sub-zero temperatures, AFPs have numerous applications in different industries. They possess very small resemblance to each other and cannot be easily identified using simple search algorithms such as BLAST and PSI-BLAST. Diverse AFPs found in fishes (Type I, II, III, IV and antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs)), are sub-types and show low sequence and structural similarity, making their accurate prediction challenging. Although several machine-learning methods have been proposed for the classification of AFPs, prediction methods that have greater reliability are required. In this paper, we propose a novel machine-learning-based approach for the prediction of AFP sequences using latent space learning through a deep auto-encoder method. For latent space pruning, we use the output of the auto-encoder with a deep neural network classifier to learn the non-linear mapping of the protein sequence descriptor and class label. The proposed method outperformed the existing methods, yielding excellent results in comparison. A comprehensive ablation study is performed, and the proposed method is evaluated in terms of widely used performance measures. In particular, the proposed method demonstrated a high Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.52, F-score of 0.49, and Youden’s index of 0.81 on an independent test dataset, thereby outperforming the existing methods for AFP prediction.

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is a vital process in wireless communication systems that is fundamentally a classification problem. It is employed to automatically determine the type of modulation of a received signal. Deep learning (DL) methods have gained popularity in addressing the problem of modulation classification, as they automatically learn the features without needing technical expertise. However, their efficacy depends on the complexity of the algorithm, which can be characterized by the number of parameters. In this research, we presented a deep learning algorithm for AMC, inspired by residual learning, which has remarkable accuracy and great representational ability. We also employed a squeeze-and-excitation network that is capable of exploiting modeling interconnections between channels and adaptively re-calibrates the channel-wise feature response to improve performance. The proposed network was designed to meet the accuracy requirements with a reduced number of parameters for efficiency. The proposed model was evaluated on two benchmark datasets and compared with existing methods. The results show that the proposed model outperforms existing methods in terms of accuracy and has up to 72.5% fewer parameters than convolutional neural network designs.

It is of utmost importance to develop a computational method for accurate prediction of antioxidants, as they play a vital role in the prevention of several diseases caused by oxidative stress. In this correspondence, we present an effective computational methodology based on the notion of deep latent space encoding. A deep neural network classifier fused with an auto-encoder learns class labels in a pruned latent space. This strategy has eliminated the need to separately develop classifier and the feature selection model, allowing the standalone model to effectively harness discriminating feature space and perform improved predictions. A thorough analytical study has been presented alongwith the PCA/tSNE visualization and PCA-GCNR scores to show the discriminating power of the proposed method. The proposed method showed a high MCC value of 0.43 and a balanced accuracy of 76.2%, which is superior to the existing models. The model has been evaluated on an independent dataset during which it outperformed the contemporary methods by correctly identifying the novel proteins with an accuracy of 95%.

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are the sub-set of ice binding proteins indispensable for the species living in extreme cold weather. These proteins bind to the ice crystals, hindering their growth into large ice lattice that could cause physical damage. There are variety of AFPs found in numerous organisms and due to the heterogeneous sequence characteristics, AFPs are found to demonstrate a high degree of diversity, which makes their prediction a challenging task. Herein, we propose a machine learning framework to deal with this vigorous and diverse prediction problem using the manifolding learning through composition of k-spaced amino acid pairs. We propose to use the deep neural network with skipped connection and ReLU non-linearity to learn the non-linear mapping of protein sequence descriptor and class label. The proposed antifreeze protein prediction method called AFP-CKSAAP has shown to outperform the contemporary methods, achieving excellent prediction scores on standard dataset. The main evaluater for the performance of the proposed method in this study is Youden's index whose high value is dependent on both sensitivity and specificity. In particular, AFP-CKSAAP yields a Youden's index value of 0.82 on the independent dataset, which is better than previous methods.

In this paper, a fractional order calculus based least mean square algorithm is proposed for complex system identification. The proposed algorithm, named as, fractional complex least mean square (FCLMS), successfully deals with the problem of complex error due to negative weights or complex input/output in the FLMS. For the evaluation purpose a complex linear system is considered. The FCLMS algorithm successfully identifies the complex system and achieve high convergence rate without compromising the steady state error. The convergence rate of the proposed FCLMS is two times better than that of the complex least mean square (CLMS).
