The concept of smart city evolved with the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in various sub-systems and processes in urban environment. The development of the smart cities is the best possible solution to major urban issues. It contributes towards economic and social development of the residents. It aims to provide the cordial environment in the domains of healthcare, education, transportation, power generation and dissipation, security, living, industry, etc., to the inhabitants to make their lives comfortable. Sustainability of these services is another major objective in a smart city framework. Along with the true realization of the idea of a smart city, advanced computational and communication technologies are contributing hugely towards its sustainable development. Communication technologies act as backbone to ensure connectivity at the various levels in a smart city framework. Novel smart city solutions for different application domains are designed and deployed by the industry using advanced computational technologies like IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Big Data and Cloud Computing. In this work, authors discuss the concept of smart city, its architecture and sustainability. Different operational domains in a smart city ecosystem are elaborated. The cyber physical aspect of the smart cities is discussed in brief. The role of various computational and communication technologies in the sustainable development of smart cities is presented. Limiting factors in the deployment of various advanced technologies in different smart city domains are highlighted. Security issues associated with the technological sustainable development of different smart city services along with existing solutions are discussed. The article is concluded by highlighting the future research directions.

The issue of the energy shortage is affecting the entire planet. This is occurring because of massive population and industry growth around the world. As a result, the entire world is attempting to implement green networking systems and manufacture the power/energy efficient products. This research work discusses the green networking system technologies. This work introduces a power‐efficient control unit (CU) design and implemented on the Zynq SoC (System on Chip) ultrascale field programmable gate array (FPGA). The VIVADO HLx Design Suite is used to simulate and analyze the CU model which is considered as one of the key components of central processing unit (CPU), used for data communication purposes. The CU is made suitable for the green communication by making it power‐efficient. Therefore, the power consumption of the CU is analyzed for the various set frequency value ranging between 100 MHz and 5 GHz, and it is discovered that as the clock frequency rises up, the total power consumption also tends to get increased. The total power of the proposed model is reduced by 77.42%, 21.29%, and 17.93% from three models, respectively, being compared in the present paper. Final results shows that the CU is better suited to run at low frequencies to optimize power consumption.

With the use of hybrid renewable sources for example solar and wind turbines, an autonomous electric power generation system based on self‐sufficient electric power generation is built in order to promote a smart and ecologically friendly environment. The three‐phase inverter that links this scattered generating unit to the grid is in charge of ensuring that it is properly connected to the grid. While the energy produced by the hybrid unit is being utilized, it is also being stored in the batteries so that it may be used to transport power when other sources of power are not available, such as when the grid is down. This stand‐alone power conversion and storage system is being built with the aid of power electronic converters and controllers, among other components, in order to ensure balanced power flow operation. To produce PWM pulses for the generator side converter, a PI controller is utilized. On the PV side, an improved PI controller is used to drive the SEPIC converter, which increases the transient responsiveness of the converter while it is being controlled by the controller. In order to communicate with the grid, the generated electricity is routed via a three‐phase inverter that is controlled according to the DQ theory. The challenges connected with poor power quality are substantially resolved by the converters that have been presented. For simplicity of use, an automated control function has been introduced; in addition, an interactive MATLAB model of the system is being developed for minor and medium‐scale microgrid applications; also, a prototype is being created to verify the simulation results.
