Nowadays, Predictive Torque Control (PTC) is the most popular control technique in the field of Electric drives. This PTC strategy is introduced for Open End Winding Induction Motor (OEWIM) drive in view of advantages. The conventional PTC offers single cost function where torque and stator flux control objectives are present. Since these control objectives are dissimilar, weighting factor designation to the respective control objective is essential. Weighting factor tuning by an empirical approach leads the control process cumbersome. To overcome this tuning problem, the article suggests single control objective containing stator reference and predicted flux space vectors. This simplified proposed control scheme relieves PTC from weighting factor and facilitate combined torque and flux control. However, to control inverter switching frequency including torque and flux in single cost function, weighting factors assignment and its proper tuning is indispensable. The proposed scheme is extended by replacing single cost function with separate multi-objectives and its optimization is achieved using simple ranking analysis with limited prediction voltage vectors. This proposed feature permits PTC independent from weighting factors. Simulation and experimentation are performed on dual inverter fed OEWIM drive. The achieved results are related with conventional PTC to verify the effectiveness of proposed PTC.

Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) methods are emerging as a powerful control technique for power electronic converters and drives. FCS-MPC methods work on the principle of minimizing a single cost function. The cost function consists of multiple control objectives with different magnitudes and requires weighting factors for optimization. The calculation of the weighting factor is a cumbersome process and it depends on the system parameters and operating conditions. In this paper, a new approach for eliminating the weighting factors in Predictive Torque Control (PTC) method for two-level Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) fed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drive is developed. In the proposed PTC method, the torque and flux objectives are considered as separate cost functions and evaluated with all seven different Voltage Vectors (VVs). The top three VVs corresponding to minimized torque and flux objective cost functions are considered individually. Among these, optimal VV is selected for minimizing both torque and flux ripples. As a result, monotonous flux weighting factors tuning is not required and reduction in switching frequency is also achieved. To validate the proposed methodology, both simulation and experiment results in terms of steady state and dynamic operations of PMSM drive are presented.

Variable speed Induction Motor drives with Predictive Torque Control (PTC) technique is an advancing technology nowadays. The PTC technique is introduced for dual inverter fed Open End Winding Induction Motor (OEWIM) configuration owing to its benefits. The conventional PTC requires flux weighting factor assignment because of two different control objectives (Torque and Flux) in single cost function. This weighting factor selection plays a key role in selecting optimal voltage vector for better torque and flux response. Several analytical and empirical methods are introduced for optimal selection of weighting factor, which demands more computational time. This work aims to develop modified PTC, eliminating flux weighting factor. The flux control objective is replaced by an equivalent reactive torque control. Thus making two control objectives of same units and eliminating the requirement of flux weighting factor in cost function. Furthermore, nearest voltage vector selection strategy is introduced to limit the number of prediction voltage vectors in each sampling period. Thus overall computational burden is reduced achieving minimum torque and flux ripples. The performance of proposed PTC for multi-level inversion fed OEWIM is evaluated through MATLAB/Simulink simulations and experimental analysis. To highlight its benefits, these results are compared with conventional and recent PTC technique.

Open end winding induction motor (OEWIM) drives are better alternate for multi‐level inverter fed induction motor drives. OEWIM drives can be used in industries and electric vehicles but they entail ripple‐free torque. Predictive torque control (PTC) strategy offers high dynamic performance and lesser ripple in torque, flux when compared with direct torque control. Classical PTC involves high switching frequencies and empirical methods to select weighting factors. The selection and tuning of weighting factors are cumbersome. In this article, a new normalised weighted sum model (WSM) based PTC of four‐level inverter fed OEWIM is introduced to curtail torque, flux ripples, switching frequency and enhance the selection of weighting factors. The proposed algorithm uses multi‐objective cost function and the optimisation of cost function is performed by using normalised WSM. The normalisation of individual cost function simplifies the selection of weighting factors to select optimal voltage vector. As a result, the proposed PTC offers all the features of classical PTC and overcomes the difficulties involved in classical PTC. Simulation and experimental studies are performed on dual inverter fed OEWIM with four‐level inversion. The effectiveness of proposed algorithm is verified by comparing proposed PTC algorithm with classical PTC algorithm.

This article presents an improved predictive torque control scheme for an induction motor (IM) drive by incorporating auto tuning feature. Among the variant control techniques, predictive torque control for an IM drive is the real choice for high dynamic performance and it became more popular since it involves control parameters in cost function. Weighting factor adjustment in cost function has direct influence in the performance of a drive. The main problem associated with the conventional predictive torque control scheme is the selection of convenient weighting factors to accomplish optimal torque and flux response. To overcome this problem, auto tuning of weighting factor based on control objective is introduced. With this, optimal weighting factor is selected for cost function evaluation in every sampling time, thereby giving desired performance. To validate this, MATLAB/Simulink and experimental results are presented for an IM drive fed by two level voltage source inverter. These results establish that proposed control scheme of IM drive exhibits optimal torque and flux response.
