Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) exploits successive interference cancellation technique at the receivers to improve the spectral efficiency. By using this technique, multiple users can be multiplexed on the same subchannel to achieve high sum rate. Most previous research works on NOMA systems assume perfect channel state information (CSI). However, in this paper, we investigate energy efficiency improvement for a downlink NOMA single-cell network by considering imperfect CSI. The energy efficient resource scheduling problem is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem with the constraints of outage probability limit, the maximum power of the system, the minimum user data rate, and the maximum number of multiplexed users sharing the same subchannel. Different from previous works, the maximum number of multiplexed users can be greater than two, and the imperfect CSI is first studied for resource allocation in NOMA. To efficiently solve this problem, the probabilistic mixed problem is first transformed into a non-probabilistic problem. An iterative algorithm for user scheduling and power allocation is proposed to maximize the system energy efficiency. The optimal user scheduling based on exhaustive search serves as a system performance benchmark, but it has high computational complexity. To balance the system performance and the computational complexity, a new suboptimal user scheduling scheme is proposed to schedule users on different subchannels. Based on the user scheduling scheme, the optimal power allocation expression is derived by the Lagrange approach. By transforming the fractional-form problem into an equivalent subtractive-form optimization problem, an iterative power allocation algorithm is proposed to maximize the system energy efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed user scheduling algorithm closely attains the optimal performance.

Emerging Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications are driving increasing demand for advanced services in wireless networks, prompting the development of new technologies to address the associated challenges. Energy efficiency of IoT standards is a key feature targeted by research efforts and industrial activities, leading to an extensive and growing number of innovative solutions. Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) define a class of wireless communication technologies seen as highly relevant for future IoT development given its long communication range, low-cost devices and interesting energy management. Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) is acknowledged to be the dominant IoT communication technology. It has allowed broad deployment and unlocked new IoT applications such as smart cities, asset tracking, etc. This article provides a comprehensive tutorial on the LoRa standard, and surveys existing solutions, hot topics and future insights for building energy efficient IoT infrastructures and IoT devices. Indeed, energy efficiency is one of the key factors for successful and sustainable deployments of IoT applications. More precisely, this article discusses how to meet LoRa/LoRaWAN energy efficiency across physical layer, medium access control layer, and network layer. Next, extensive pioneering solutions from related literature are compared and assessed. Finally, insightful conclusions are drawn, and open problems are listed at the end of this article.

The Massive Internet of Things (MIoT) envisions an interconnected ecosystem of billions of devices, fundamentally transforming diverse sectors such as healthcare, smart cities, transportation, agriculture, and energy management. However, the vast scale of MIoT introduces significant challenges, including network scalability, efficient data management, energy conservation, and robust security mechanisms. This paper presents a thorough review of existing and emerging MIoT technologies designed to address these challenges, including Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWAN), 5G/6G capabilities, edge and fog computing architectures, and hybrid access methodologies. We further investigate advanced strategies such as AI-driven resource allocation, federated learning for privacy-preserving analytics, and decentralized security frameworks using blockchain. Additionally, we analyze sustainable practices, emphasizing energy harvesting and integrating green technologies to reduce environmental impact. Through extensive comparative analysis, this study identifies critical innovations and architectural adaptations required to support efficient, resilient, and scalable MIoT deployments. Key insights include the role of network slicing and intelligent resource management for scalability, adaptive protocols for real-time data handling, and lightweight AI models suited to the constraints of MIoT devices. This research ultimately contributes to a deeper understanding of how MIoT systems can evolve to meet the growing demand for seamless, reliable connectivity while prioritizing sustainability, security, and performance across diverse applications. Our findings serve as a roadmap for future advancements, underscoring the potential of MIoT to support a globally interconnected, intelligent infrastructure.

Retinal implants aim to partially restore vision to patients suffering from blindness caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Up until now, most prostheses were powered using an inductive link coupled with cables penetrating through the eyeball. Although they efficiently power the implant, they limit long-term reliability and cause postoperative complications. A fully wireless near-infrared power and data link entering the eye through the pupil alleviates these issues but limits the available power and causes energy supply interruptions during blinking. This article presents a retinal implant ASIC architecture optimized for optical operation despite these constraints. It contains 288 individually controlled electrode drivers, each connected to electrode pads with a pitch of 150 μm. A digital controller with a stateless communication scheme allows flexible stimulation sequences and is capable of restoring stimulation within 3 ms after an eye blink. The prototype was fabricated using a CMOS 65-nm low-power technology and occupies an area of 2.8 × 3.1 mm 2 with a static power consumption of 3.1 mW.

Matrix factorization is a key component for solving several computer vision problems. It is particularly challenging in the presence of missing or erroneous data, which often arise in structure-from-motion. We propose batch algorithms for matrix factorization. They are based on closure and basis constraints, that are used either on the cameras or the structure, leading to four possible algorithms. The constraints are robustly computed from complete measurement sub-matrices with e.g. random data sampling. The cameras and 3D structure are then recovered through linear least squares. Prior information about the scene such as identical camera positions or orientations, smooth camera trajectory, known 3D points and coplanarity of some 3D points can be directly incorporated. We demonstrate our algorithms on challenging image sequences with tracking error and more than 95% missing data.
