Purpose: This paper aims to provide an overview of key definitions related to ChatGPT, a public tool developed by OpenAI, and its underlying technology, Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT). Design/methodology/approach: This paper includes an interview with ChatGPT on its potential impact on academia and libraries. The interview discusses the benefits of ChatGPT such as improving search and discovery, reference and information services; cataloging and metadata generation; and content creation, as well as the ethical considerations that need to be taken into account, such as privacy and bias. Findings: ChatGPT has considerable power to advance academia and librarianship in both anxiety-provoking and exciting new ways. However, it is important to consider how to use this technology responsibly and ethically, and to uncover how we, as professionals, can work alongside this technology to improve our work, rather than to abuse it or allow it to abuse us in the race to create new scholarly knowledge and educate future professionals. Originality/value: This paper discusses the history and technology of GPT, including its generative pretrained transformer model, its ability to perform a wide range of language-based tasks and how ChatGPT uses this technology to function as a sophisticated chatbot.

International students face unique challenges in pursuing higher education in a foreign country. To address these challenges and enhance their academic experience, higher education institutions are increasingly exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) applications. This research essay aims to investigate the impact of AI on the education of international students. Instead of a traditional literature review, it employs a research approach to examine the potential applications of AI and discuss associated concerns. The research paper explores various AI applications, such as personalized learning experiences, adaptive testing, predictive analytics, and chatbots for learning and research. By analyzing the role of AI in education for international students, this research paper sheds light on how AI can improve learning efficiency and provide customized educational support. Additionally, it identifies significant risks and limitations, including privacy concerns, cultural differences, language proficiency, and ethical implications, which must be effectively addressed. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the potential impact of AI on international students’ educational experiences and offer insights into the integration of AI into educational administration and learning processes.

This study synthesizes timely information about the COVID-19 virus and examines how public libraries have responded to the pandemic in real-time through their online announcements to the public. A content analysis of library announcements relating to the COVID-19 pandemic posted during the period of March 14–April 12, 2020, was performed. Over 90 percent of libraries announced a closure due to the pandemic and 98 percent libraries indicated programs were suspended. Over half of libraries posted about COVID-19 and general hygiene practices. Many announcements changed in terms of content from March 14 to April 12, demonstrating the rapidly evolving nature of the pandemic. This study suggests that libraries can and do play an important role in providing reliable information about pandemics like COVID-19 for patrons.

The field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has seen significant advancements in recent years, thanks in large part to the development of powerful language models such as ChatGPT. ChatGPT, short for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is a large-scale neural language model developed by OpenAI that is capable of generating human-like responses to natural language input. With its impressive performance on a range of language tasks, ChatGPT has quickly become one of the most widely used language models in NLP research and application. The preceding paragraph showcases ChatGPT’s capabilities, as it was composed and formatted entirely using artificial intelligence (AI). Clearly, ChatGPT holds tremendous power when it comes to writing-based tasks. As noted in a recent C&RL News article by Christopher Cox and Elias Tzoc, ChatGPT, and similar large language model technologies, have the potential to be disruptive technologies, significantly affecting not just academic libraries but higher education as a whole. In this article, we aim to explore some of these potential issues and propose a few possibilities for how we, as information professionals, may be able to help address them as they emerge.

In response to the increasing complexity and sophistication of cyber threats, particularly those enhanced by advancements in artificial intelligence, traditional security methods are proving insufficient. This paper provides an overview of the zero-trust cybersecurity framework, which operates on the principle of “never trust, always verify” to mitigate vulnerabilities within organizations. Specifically, this paper examines the applicability of zero-trust principles in environments where large volumes of information are exchanged, such as schools and libraries, highlighting the importance of continuous authentication (proving who users are within the network), least privilege access (providing only access to what users specifically need), and breach assumption (assuming a breach has or will occur and thus operating to limit the spread through the use of multiple checkpoints throughout the network). The analysis highlights avenues for future research that may help preserve the security of vulnerable organizations.
