Approximate computing at the nanoscale provides sufficiently accurate and often adaptive results to improve hardware efficiency for error-tolerant applications. Differently from conventional Boolean logic-based designs, many emerging nanotechnologies extensively assemble circuits using the voter-based majority logic (ML). In this letter, we investigate designs of approximate radix-4 Booth multipliers based on ML. Initially, we propose two new radix-4 Booth partial product (PP) generation methods by exploiting the characteristics of ML. Based on these methods, approximate PP generators are designed to produce single-sided or double-sided errors. The PPs are then reduced by using the features of errors to construct approximate multipliers. Specifically, complementary strategies guided by an analysis of error effects are developed to compensate for the accuracy loss and to reduce the hardware overhead during the PP reduction. The reduced PPs are then compressed by using full adders. Four approximate multipliers are proposed to offer various accuracy requirements for different applications. These designs show superior performance in power and area for emerging nanotechnologies. As case studies, image processing, a multiple-layer perceptron and a multi-task convolutional neural network are presented to show the validity and advantages of the proposed designs.

As a new paradigm in the nanoscale technologies, approximate computing enables error tolerance in the computational process; it has also emerged as a low power design methodology for arithmetic circuits. Majority logic (ML) is applicable to many emerging technologies and its basic building block (the 3-input majority voter) has been extensively used in digital circuit design. In this paper, we propose the design of a one-bit approximate full adder based on majority logic. Furthermore, multi-bit approximate full adders are also proposed and studied; the application of these designs to quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) is also presented as an example. The designs are evaluated using hardware metrics (including delay and area) as well as error metrics. Compared with other circuits found in the technical literature, the optimal designs are found to offer superior performance.

Ising machines have received growing interest as efficient and hardware-friendly solvers for combinatorial optimization problems (COPs). They search for the absolute or approximate ground states of the Ising model with a proper annealing process. In contrast to Ising machines built with superconductive or optical circuits, complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) Ising machines offer inexpensive fabrication, high scalability, and easy integration with mainstream semiconductor chips. As low-energy and CMOS-compatible emerging technologies, spintronics and phase-transition devices offer functionalities that can enhance the scalability and sampling performance of Ising machines. In this article, we survey various approaches in the process flow for solving COPs using CMOS, hybrid CMOSspintronic, and phase-transition devices. First, the methods for formulating COPs as Ising problems and embedding Ising formulations to the topology of the Ising machine are reviewed. Then, Ising machines are classified by their underlying operational principles and reviewed from a perspective of hardware implementation. CMOS solutions are advantageous with denser connectivity, whereas hybrid CMOS-spintronic and phase-transition device-based solutions show great potential in energy efficiency and high performance. Finally, the challenges and prospects are discussed for the Ising formulation, embedding process, and implementation of Ising machines.

Approximate computing (AC) offers benefits by reducing the requirement for full accuracy, thereby reducing power consumption and area. The majority logic (ML) gate functions as the fundamental logic block of many emerging nanotechnologies. In this article, ML-based arithmetic circuits, i.e., multibit adders and multipliers, are proposed. These adders are designed to prevent the propagation of inexact carry-out signals to higher order computing parts to enhance accuracy. We implemented the proposed multiplier by using a unique partial product reduction (PPR) circuitry, which was based on the parallel approximate 6:3 compressor. Several logic implementation costs, error metrics, and layouts implemented by quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) are analyzed to evaluate the adder designs. A significant improvement is observed over previous ML-based designs based on the experimental results. The proposed designs are further evaluated using both a neural network (NN) accelerator and image processing. A structural similarity (SSIM) value of 1 and a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) value of infinity are achieved by the proposed adder design.

The increasing computational intensity of important new applications poses a challenge for their use in resource-restricted devices. Approximate computing using power-efficient arithmetic circuits is one of the emerging strategies to reach this objective. In this article, five hardware-efficient logarithmic floating-point (FP) multipliers are proposed, which all use simple operators, such as adders and multiplexers, to replace complex and more costly conventional FP multipliers. Radix-4 logarithms are used to further reduce the hardware complexity. These designs produce double-sided error distributions to mitigate error accumulation in complex computations. The proposed multipliers provide superior trade-offs between accuracy and hardware, with up to 30.8% higher accuracy than a recent logarithmic FP design or up to $68\times$ less energy than the conventional FP multiplier. Using the proposed FP logarithmic multipliers in JPEG image compression achieves higher image quality than a recent logarithmic multiplier design with up to 4.7 dB larger peak signal-to-noise ratio. For training in benchmark NN applications, the proposed FP multipliers can slightly improve the classification accuracy while achieving $4.2\times$ less energy and $2.2\times$ smaller area than the state-of-the-art design.

The Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT), as a high-efficiency algorithm of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), is widely used in Digital Signal Processing (DSP), wireless communication systems, spectrum analysis, and image processing. Approximate computing has shown effectiveness and feasibility to enhance the hardware efficiency of these applications. However, most approximate units in previous works are designed case by case, which has low efficiency and is difficult to find the optimal design. In this paper, a top-down design strategy for approximate floating-point (FP) FFT is proposed, which includes a mantissa bit-width adjustment algorithm and a step-by-step multiplier approximation algorithm. With the mantissa bit-width adjustment algorithm, the approximate 64 FP FFT achieved 50% area reduction and 70% power-delay product (PDP) reduction compared to the exact design with a 60dB Signal Noise Ratio (SNR) requirement, which is also at least 52% and 33% better than the previous approximate FP FFT. After using the step-by-step multiplier approximation algorithm, the approximate mantissa multiplier with an 8-bit fractional part reduced the area and PDP by 81.15% and 93.70%, respectively. The feasibility of the proposed approximate FFT design is verified in the channel estimation module of a wireless communication system, spectrum analysis, and image processing system.
