Private universities also play a key role in the sustainability debate. But despite their importance, there a shortage of research on how sustainability is being implemented at private universities. Based on the need to address this gap, this paper investigates the nature and diversity of sustainability-based practices undertaken at private universities. It outlines the ways private universities see and perceive sustainability, and examines by means of a survey involving 10 universities from across all geographical regions which educate over 150.000 students, how these universities incorporate sustainability-related practices, as part of their operations. The results suggest that, unlike their public counterparts, about half of the respondents stated that they do not have projects undertaken to promote sustainability in local communities or in their respective regions. Also, some private universities perceive themselves as leaders in sustainability in higher education, while some are still developing a more robust sustainability profile. The conclusions of the paper are that the special features related to sustainable development teaching and research at private universities need to be better identified, in order to involve them more on sustainability efforts. Also, whereas many of them are highly engaged on improving energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote sustainable water usage and promote sustainable landscaping, there is a need for them to also engage in other areas. Finally, private universities should engage on further efforts to increase their sustainability activities, which are beneficial to them in financial terms, as well as in respect of their image and their operations.

Governance issues, here interpreted as the provisions of adequate policy frameworks characterized by reliability and accountability, coupled with resources to support their implementation, are known to be the basis for the implementation of sustainable development measures. This paper discusses the influence of governance in the ways sustainability is perceived and practiced in a higher education context. Apart from due considerations to the role of governance as the basis for regulation and institutional actions and management decisions, this paper reports on an empirical study undertaken in a sample of higher education institutions. This study entailed an analysis of sustainable development policies, certification, organizational structure, budget, reports, team for sustainability, staff training, and challenges for the integration of sustainability and governance. The results suggest that even though there are different opinions and attitudes on the role of governance, it is regarded as an important component in supporting efforts by higher education institutions to include considerations on sustainable development as part of their strategies.

In the last decades, the topic regarding the relationship between culture and economics received increased interest. Given the fact that most of the research on this topic uses historical evidence and employs qualitative and mixed research methods, the present article aims at enriching its methodology by proposing a valuable quantitative instrument: a cultural matrix based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory. After analysing different computing methods of cultural distance, the most appropriate one seemed to be a weighted composite method. The applicability of the composite measures of cultural distance (unweighted and weighted) was compared in a model explaining Spanish migration flows to 35 OECD countries in the period 2005–2017. The results partially confirm the findings of other studies, indicating mixed results regarding the relationship between cultural distance and migration flows. The article provides new insights by recommending the use of weighted composite measures of cultural distance in economic analyses. In addition, the article highlights the importance of drawing appropriately each cultural dimension’ weights, given that inadequate estimations of cultural dimensions’ weights can significantly alter the research results and misrepresent the reality.

Technological advances have been crucial for economic development as well as for increasing social and individual welfare; however, it is not uncommon for imbalances and inequalities to appear simultaneously and may give rise to new social groups at risk of exclusion. In the age of technology, there is still the risk of technological exclusion and the digital divide is still present. The concern for sustainable development in its three aspects: environmental, economic and social has led to the search for socio-political environments that minimize the risk of exclusion. The objective of this paper is to analyze the access to technology as a social and human rights problem, which transcends individual needs to become a key issue in public policies. Primary data have been collected, through a survey with the objective of evaluating the opinion of citizens on the relevance of implementing public policies targeted to achieve technology universal access, as a central issue in public agendas. Different social groups’ profiles have shown divergent opinions.

The goal of the paper is to examine the relation between finance and sustainability, with a special emphasis on the impact of negative externalities. Sustainable development as a concept aims to mitigate negative externalities. Conventional finance offers no room for the environment and society. Therefore, three-dimensional sustainable finance has appeared. This paper is the first original attempt to examine the relationship between: financial, economic, environmental and social development indicators from the sustainability perspective, with a special focus on externalities. To study the disparities between the European Union (EU) countries belonging to the OECD in the field of sustainable development and sustainable finance, the multi-criteria taxonomy was used. The basis of the analyses was the indicators transformed according to the relative taxonomy method. The database, based on Eurostat, contains indicators describing pillars of sustainable development such as: economic (12 indicators), social (28), environmental (7) and sustainable finance (16). The study analyses the sample of 23 countries in 2007, 2013 and 2016. The results confirm a positive relationship among the analysed indicators. On the basis of 62 statistical features selected according to the statistical methods, 7 groups of countries were obtained in 2007 and 2013 and 8 groups in 2016. In the case of Scandinavian countries, one can observe a permanent separation of economic growth from its negative impact on the natural environment. Such dependencies are no longer so obvious in the case of other EU countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Therefore, attention should be paid to the most economically developed countries in Western Europe, i.e., Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, whose high rankings in the case of economic, social and very often also financial results correspond to much worse results in the case of environmental development.

Sustainability is a leading criterion in the decision-making process in sustainable finance concerning financial markets and private entities as well as in public finance. State and self-governing entities play a key role in implementing and supporting the sustainable finance concept. There is some empirical evidence that a positive association exists between higher public revenue (as a percent of GDP) and income inequality reduction, as well as the key role of public social spending on human development. The chapter presents a theoretical approach to public debt management from the perspective of balanced finances. Differences in the understanding of sustainable public debt management in the traditional and stable financial paradigm are pointed out. The chapter uses a critical analysis of literature, the method of induction and deduction, a method of comparisons and generalizations, and a synthesis method. Because of the conducted analyses, it is shown that balanced finance in a comprehensive manner describes and explains the complexity of the public debt management category in terms of the traditional finance paradigm.

With the development of the so-called platform economy, economic agents obtain synergies that allow them to develop business models with exponential growth. On the basis of this type of platform, numerous “collaborative entrepreneurship” initiatives have emerged in recent years, which have established themselves in cities, competing with services that already existed but providing them with greater flexibility and incurring in lower costs. Currently, most companies tend to outsource productive resources, taking advantage of the virtualization capacity of their jobs, thanks to the extensive coverage of connectivity networks deployed in cities. This situation facilitates the entry of new agents that can solve this growing demand into the market. In this chapter, we analyze the different business platforms capable of implementing compatible self-employment activities, to facilitate labor insertion through sustainable and quality self-employment that responds to the demand for services in cities.

Sustainability is a complex concept. It only can be achieved from a global perspective, where social, economic and environmental issues are all key factors for achieving the goal. This paper is focused on the importance of social sustainability and, as a consequence, the importance of avoiding each and everyone’s risk of poverty and exclusion as due to the recent crisis effects. Nevertheless, this crisis resulted in higher inequalities and put a lot of people at risk of poverty, even in “developed” countries. Through a statistical and econometric analysis, some of the key factors to which the European Union should aim to avoid unsustainable scenarios are analysed. A regression, factorial and cluster analysis is carried out and this leads to conclude that the labour market is key in promoting economic policies in order to achieve social sustainability.

Purpose This paper aims to emphasize how economics courses offered at higher education institutions can influence sustainable development, in general, and Romania’s sustainable development, in particular. Design/methodology/approach The conclusions are based on a pilot questionnaire conducted by the authors on the level of Romanian students enrolled in public and private economic faculties. The results were based on a sample of 1,250 respondents – students, master and PhD – from the economic faculties of some prestigious Romanian universities. To identify differences between some groups, t-test analysis and ANOVA were conducted. Findings Education is an important pillar for ensuring sustainable development because through education, people understand and learn how to become more responsible toward the environment. Studies conducted in the twenty-first century are showing a direct link between the investment in education and economic, social and human development. The present study revealed that the economic higher education system in Romania has started with small steps to adapt to the environmental requirements. Unfortunately, the efforts still required to be made are significant, since it is observed that all undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD require a change of attitude and mentality. Romanian public universities are more involved than private universities in the implementation of programs, projects, debates and courses on sustainable development and students’ reactions are positive. Originality/value This paper provides useful insights, allowing a better understanding of the role of universities in fostering sustainable development. This research is useful to find solutions for developing education for sustainable development in Romania and it can be a starting point for ESD programs and policies.

This paper examines the role of public subsidies on farming efficiency for Spain by using a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach followed by a nonparametric regression of efficiency to farm specific factors (economic size, environmentally friendly behavior and regional aspects). The empirical analysis suggest that although a higher degree of direct payments negatively affects farm efficiency, these subsidies become an incentive for environmental friendly behavior by farmers in order to improve the productive efficiency. In turn, this proposition leads to a careful attention for the roots of agricultural productions in line to the EU aim of more market-oriented agriculture. Then, a conceptual framework was elaborated in order to propose a multi-layered model for supporting the design of a green business plan based on functional foods. This study also explores the process of generation-production-consumption of functional foods, involving not only the knowledge transfer of the healthy properties of these products but also the multiple role of rural women as producers, educators/advisors and buyers of these foods. The positioning of rural women in the whole process of functional foods results relevant to build their competitive advantage as local entrepreneurs. The leverage points of the strategic formulation of green business models were reinforced following the roadmapping methodology from a dynamic perspective: alliances with suppliers of knowledge (researchers), identification with their reference groups (investors, clients) and management of intellectual capital (structural, human, relational). Finally, findings reveal that rural women are better positioned than others to create businesses based on functional foods from a niche formulation.

In the fourth revolution era talking innovation is not only necessary for improving and forwarding all social and economic activities, but also is it an exigence of those who are demanding high-quality goods or services. This is important for knowledge services, and becomes a core issue for educative issues designed for the millennials or digital natives. Sometimes, these exigencies are no shown directly, but it is possible assessing them by means of the analysis of sentiments, which reflects a range of feelings which are not clearly verbalized and even self-recognized. This paper analyzes sentiments for assessing the importance of innovative procedures in higher education, from the point of view of the students. A prototype architecture – LADEL (Learning Analytics Dashboard for E-Learning) - is introduced, for dealing with the diverse e-learning domains. Some experiments are conducted. This demonstrated the necessity of innovative procedures in higher education, since it is a widespread, multidisciplinary and transversal demand, even it is not always explicit.

Purpose Smart cities can be understood as an inclusive space for each and everyone to achieve their best options, within the framework of sustainable development, where institutions boost information and technology environments that help achieve the highest individual and social well-being with the aim of improving the lives of citizens.
