Advanced fault-tolerant control schemes are required for ensuring efficient and reliable operation of complex technological systems such as ground vehicles. A novel approach to fault-tolerant control design is proposed for a full-scale vehicle dynamic model with an active suspension system in the presence of uncertainties and actuator faults. The proposed control scheme uses a sliding-mode controller to generate the tracking signal to the valve for each of the four wheel subsystems for mitigating three degrees of freedom (3-DOF) heave-roll-pitch motion arising from road undulations. For each of the electrohydraulic valve-cylinder pair in each subsystem, an adaptive proportional-integralderivative (PID) controller is proposed. Designing an adaptation scheme for the PID gains to accommodate actuator faults is among the main contributions of this work. The focus on actuator faults is motivated by the fact that loss of actuator effectiveness is a critical fault scenario in vehicle suspension systems and that the probability of occurrence of faults in actuators is higher and more severe when compared with other components. To analyze the performance of the proposed approach, computer simulations are carried out to illustrate control performance, robustness, and fault tolerance. The performance of our approach is then compared with that of the sliding-mode control (SMC) approach presented by Chamseddine and Noura. Results clearly indicate the strength of the adaptation scheme and its ability to mitigate fault effects in a short time. Simplicity of the overall scheme and the stabilization of the system under both faulty and fault-free conditions are the main positive features of the proposed approach.

Micro-Grid (MG), a paradigm shift in conventional distribution power systems, facilitates the integration of many Renewable Energy Resources (RERs), storage units, and loads. The key catalyst behind this emerging paradigm is the increased attention to environment-energy sustainability nexus. This novel concept exhibits various attractive features such as sustainability, reliability, resilience, improved power quality, energy security, and liberalization of electric service industries. However, the integration of RER units and load participation into the MG brings various challenges to the stability and operation of the system. These challenges arise as a consequence of the intermittent nature of RERs due to their stochastic behavior and increased level of non-linearity associated with smart load participation. Furthermore, in recent years, the development and deployment of RER in MG networks have demonstrated exponential growth. Therefore, in order to achieve a holistic analysis, a comprehensive review study about various aspects of MG should be investigated. In this regard, this rigorous survey paper presents the meticulous study of various aspects, historical evolution, and key enabling yet transdisciplinary technologies of MG, such as various components, generation resources, load classification, communication infrastructure, energy management, control and optimization, operational modes, and various frameworks, configurations, architectures, and topologies-including the emerging concept of Networked MG with flexible boundaries. This study also reviewed various storage and protection systems in MG, considering the attention to their contributions to the stability of the system. This review also underscores many key issues, challenges, and factors related to the sustainable development of the MG system. Lastly, an all-inclusive cross-sectoral analysis that includes cyber-physical systems, power quality, information and data management, conversion systems, synthetic inertia, and some governance issues has been provided, along with the future directions, progression, and latest development in the field of MG. This survey, therefore, greatly assists and enables researchers to study and analyze the development and prospect of MG technology conveniently.

This article proposes a fast reaching finite time synchronization approach for chaotic systems along with its application to medical image encryption. First, an adaptive terminal sliding mode tracking approach with fast reaching condition is designed to synchronize the chaotic systems at the transmitter and receiver ends in finite time. Then, a chaotic cryptosystem, using synchronized chaotic systems as secret keys generator, is proposed to enhance the security of medical image transmission and/or storage. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed synchronization approach is assessed using a simulation as well as an analytical study. The analysis encompassed security tools such as histogram analysis, correlation test, and information entropy change the rate of the number of pixels and unified average changing intensity. The obtained results confirmed the robustness and fast convergence rate of the proposed synchronization approach. The security analysis also shows that the proposed cryptosystem displays acceptable levels of resistance to various attacks.
