The role of the energy industry has always been central for one reason or another, being environmentalism the main motive in the last two decades. Therefore, attention and research have been directed in this sense. However, human resources—or human capital—have remained understudied, especially concerning the salaries received. Thus, this study is disruptive as it explored the factors that influence employee remuneration in the energy subsector, using Spain as a case study. For this, the PLS-SEM (Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling) path modelling methodology was used, executing a traditional PLS analysis, bootstrapping and, finally, IPMA (Importance-Performance Analysis). Solid and significant relationships were found among labour conditions, human capital, market and wages, with the relationships between human capital and wages and between human capital and labour conditions being especially relevant. Besides, through IPMA, a series of considerations was made regarding the individual indicators according to their relative importance and performance. Consequently, this paper significantly contributes to the extant literature by analysing the composition of wages in the energy sector, which might allow taking valuable management decisions. Nevertheless, the main limitation of this study lies in the availability of data for Spain and, specifically, for workers in the energy supplying industries.

Ecotourism is one of the tourism variants with more annual growth. Motivation has become a fundamental criterion for travel behavior. Segmentation is used to identify the market niches of different tourism products and services. This study collects these three elements and is designed to examine demand segmentation and motivations in ecotourism. The analysis was carried out in the Albufera and Serranía de Cuenca Natural Parks, both located in the Mediterranean area in Spain. The analysis sample consists in 349 surveys obtained in situ. For the data analysis, a factor analysis and nonhierarchical K-media segmentation were performed. The results show eight motivational dimensions: “Interpersonal relationships”, “Self-development”, “Escape”, “Building personal relationships”, “Nature”, “Ego-defensive function”, “Rewards”, and “Fun”. According to tourists’ motivations, three ecotourist segments are obtained: “Nature”, “Multiple motives”, and “Reward and Escape”. This research can assist companies and institutions to improve tourism service offers and perform efficient marketing planning.

The objective of this study was to use the perceptions of internet users to analyse the effect of the social, economic and environmental dimensions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) implemented by hotel establishments in order to determine whether those dimensions are perceived by consumers. Our analysis was based on a sample, distributed by age, sex and province segments, obtained from the Andalusian population between 16 and 74 years of age who are users of travel websites (e.g., TripAdvisor, Booking) and hotels corporate websites. A questionnaire was used to investigate each latent factor related to the three main dimensions of CSR that may affect the perceptions of accommodation service consumers. The questionnaire was statistically validated and developed in previous economic studies in this field. The data were analysed using Partial Last Square (PLS) methodology. The results confirm the validity of the three dimensions analysed, although consumers appear to play more relevance upon economic and environmental factors than upon the social components of CSR.

In recent years, the environmental protection has become of utmost importance, not only by governments and authorities responsible for its supervision but also citizens are increasingly behaving respectfully with the environment. Economic growth, especially in emerging economies, entails greater environmental impacts, while more developed countries have a more "pro-environmental" attitude. This paper aims to analyze the individual environmental values and behaviors of the citizens of the most developed economies of the world located in North America. The personal behaviors for the environment and their differentiation with respect to European countries are analyzed. The data provided by the World Values Survey Association, with a sample of more than 10,000 individuals belonging to The United States and Canada, have been used to conduct the study. The empirical analysis is addressed through a model of structural equations, where the different hypotheses can be contrasted. The work analyzes the relationships between attitudes, actions, and environmental proactivity of the individuals evaluated to compare it with previous studies conducted in Europe.

Tourism is one of the economic driving forces of Spain: the consolidation of existing tourist destinations and new market niches encourage an upward trend of tourism. The economic impacts produced by tourism are one of the major concerns of the authorities; the question is whether it is possible to continue growing without compromising our environment. This work attempts to answer this issue by analysing one of the tourism segments with higher growth in recent years: rural tourism. Using a model of partial least squares (PLS), we will analyse the environmental impacts from the point of view of the supply and its relationships with the environmental management conducted. We will also analyse the rural establishments from a global point of view and, depending on their category, explain the factors which determine the sustainable behaviour of providers, and identify that the establishments of low categories have a more sustainable conduct.

Innovation, sustainability and knowledge are outstanding concepts nowadays for firms to gain competitive advantage. There is a need to cross-seed the variables that take part in the companies’ decision-making process in order to identify how firms’ characteristics influence their innovative activities. In this paper, we focus on the sustainable innovations (which we call eco-innovation) and compare knowledge-based versus non-knowledge-based (operational) firms’ patterns, also considering manufacturing versus service sectors. To do so we rely, theoretically, on the well-known absorptive capacity model. The method used is the PLS multigroup analysis and the sample selected consists of a secondary dataset of +5900 data points from the 2012 Innovation Spanish Panel (PITEC). Results show that, on one hand, there is no difference in the way that firms acquire and assimilate knowledge and that knowledge-intensive firms excel to transform their ability to eco-innovate. On the other hand, manufacturing firms are one step further than service firms in their eco-innovative orientation.

Components related to sustainable development – such as environmental attitude, eco-innovation or environmental management – are considered key variables at the competitive level, which is why it has become urgent to study which factors motivate companies to move towards a more proactive environmental attitude. The identification of different groups in connection with estimates in the inner path model constitutes a critical issue when applying the path modelling methodology. In this paper, we identify groups of firms with similar behaviour (that is, firm segments) using the FIMIX-PLS algorithm, allowing companies to identify their environmental behaviour and therefore to make proper decisions when enhancing their environmental approach. We surveyed and interviewed 135 industrial companies located in the Valencia region of Spain. The results indicate that companies belong to three different groups that are defined by their motivation towards environmental proactivity, namely “environmental opponents”, “environmental driven” and “environmental trainers”.

Traditional multivariate control charts consider the observations to be independent. In many industrial applications, however, a certain autocorrelation level can normally be observed. This can be due to the nature of the process itself (inertia in the process), or to the way in which the sample is obtained. In the latter case, the problem involved in the autocorrelation existence was treated by the individual modelling of each series or the application of vector autoregression (VAR) models. In the former case, the analysis of the cross correlation structure between the variables is altered. In the latter one, if the cross correlation is not strong, the filtering process may modify the weakest relations. In order to improve these aspects, state-space models have been introduced into multivariate statistical process control. In the present paper, we consider a cutlery industry in order to develop a complete scheme for the efficient construction of control charts for innovations and the “inertial factor”. This is the main difference from other proposals in the literature; that is, consideration of the inertial factor in the statistical process control.

Eco-innovation is actually a fashionable topic, and several researchers are working on understanding the defining characteristics of firms that consider the environment as a priority when innovating. To date most of these studies have been carried out on manufacturing industries. This article investigates the similarities and differences among service and manufacturing firms. An empirical analysis of a sample of 5509 Spanish companies shows that the variables affecting the eco-innovative orientation of firms are quite similar. Results reveal that manufacturing firms have higher orientation toward the environment than service firms. Furthermore, highly polarized positions in environmental aspects can be found. Despite the limitations of the study, conclusions may help public policy to encourage environmental proactivity in service industry and innovation.

In this article, we analyze the impact on hotels of the ISO 14001 environmental certification system from the customers’ perspective. Based on a comparison of customer ratings of 6,850 hotels in Spain with and without ISO 14001 certification, overall guests rate the hotels with ISO 14001 certification higher than those without the certification. These results are stronger for hotel comfort and hotel services compared with other hotel attributes. Moreover, the most significant differences were found in the upscale four-star hotels. While the study does not reveal causes for these findings, the implication is that the highest end five-star luxury hotels do not gain distinctive differentiation by having the ISO 14001 certification, while for three-star hotels, guests’ price sensitivity overrides environmental concerns. At the four-star level, however, hotels seem to be able to gain a distinct market advantage from environmental certification. For all hotels, the management discipline provided by ISO 14001 can provide a competitive advantage.

The increased in the adoption of formally environmental certified practices through environmental management systems is a provable fact. Its implementation, which has a high cost for the companies, is expected to generate benefits, although the relation between the implementation of ISO 14001 and its influence on the improvement of economic indicators over time has not been documented. This paper analyzes the relation between the implementation of an environmental management system, the ISO 14001, and economic performance in the short, medium and long term for the companies of the Spanish ceramic tile industry. It explores the economic indicators for each of the 66 manufacturing companies which have implemented the aforementioned standard from 1996 until 2009 through a comparison with a control group. Results show that ISO 14001 does not affect the economic results of the studied companies. We have not found significant differences in the operating income values, neither in the increase in revenues in the long term in any of the three analyzed periods, contrary to the expected results.
