We have proposed and demonstrated a novel flexible optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) based vibration sensor with broadband frequency response. The sensor consists of a flexible FP cavity formed by soft splicing using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) material with low Young's Modulus and a compact fiber cantilever of low moment inertia as the vibration receiver. Acoustic or mechanical waves experienced by the fiber cantilever can result in obvious change of the FPI cavity length and finally be transduced to the intensity variation of the sensor signal, which makes the sensor highly sensitive to external acoustic or mechanical vibrations. Taking advantage of the superior elasticity of PDMS and compact structure of cantilever, a broadband frequency response for vibration detection has been achieved together with high sensitivity without extra external vibration receiver. The vibration detection is theoretically analyzed, and acoustic vibrations up to 20 kHz and damped mechanical vibrations from tens of hertz to tens of kilohertz, covering both the sound and part of ultrasound range, have been experimentally detected. Moreover, each event of the ball hitting and rebounding has been accurately identified by our sensor, showing excellent vibration sensing only by a thin optical fiber. We believe such a broadband, compact and cost-effective sensor would be a promising candidate for monitoring both acoustic and mechanical vibrations.

Leakage in water supply pipelines remains a significant challenge. It leads to resource and economic waste. Researchers have developed several leak detection methods, including the use of embedded sensors and pressure prediction. The former approach involves pre-installing detectors inside pipelines to detect leaks. This method allows for the precise localization of leak points. The stability is compromised because of the wireless signal strength. The latter approach, which relies on pressure measurements to predict leak events, does not achieve precise leak point localization. To address these challenges, in this paper, a coherent optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) system is employed to capture vibration signal phase information. Subsequently, two pre-trained neural network models based on CNN and Resnet18 are responsible for processing this information to accurately identify vibration events. In an experimental setup simulating water pipelines, phase information from both leaking and non-leaking pipe segments is collected. Using this dataset, classical CNN and ResNet18 models are trained, achieving accuracy rates of 99.7% and 99.5%, respectively. The multi-leakage point experiment results indicate that the Resnet18 model has better generalization compared to the CNN model. The proposed solution enables long-distance water-pipeline precise leak point localization and accurate vibration event identification.
A novel alternating current (AC) magnetic field sensor that has a stable operating point and is insensitive to ambient temperature fluctuations is presented. The sensor is based on a high attenuation fiber Bragg grating (HAFBG) attached to a magnetostrictive rod. A stable operating point is achieved by regulating a heating laser based on a feedback algorithm that compensates the temperature fluctuations of the surrounding environment. Experimental results show that the sensor responds well to dynamic magnetic fields and is able to ensure a stable operating point in the range of at least 15 °C in an ambient temperature disturbance test. The ease of fabrication and excellent performance suggest that the proposed fiber sensor is suitable for practical AC magnetic field sensing applications, such as health monitoring of transformers and fault diagnosis of induction motors.
Since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), efficient real-time monitoring has become one of the challenges faced in SARS-CoV-2 virus detection. A compact all-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer optofluidic sensor based on a hollow eccentric core fiber (HECF) for the detection and real-time monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein (SARS-CoV-2 S2) is proposed, analyzed and demonstrated. The sensor is comprised of fusion splicing single mode fiber (SMF), hollow core fiber (HCF) and HECF. After the incident light passes through the HCF from the SMF, it uniformly enters the air hole and the suspended micrometer-scale fiber core of the HECF to form a compact all-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). HECF is side polished to remove part of the cladding that the suspended fiber core can contact the external environment. Subsequently, the mouse anti SARS-CoV-2 S2 antibody is fixed on the surface of the suspended-core for the sake of achieving high sensitivity and specific sensing of SARS-CoV-2 S2. The limit of detection (LOD) of the sensor is 26.8 pM. The proposed sensor has high sensitivity, satisfactory selectivity, and can be fabricated at low cost making it highly suitable for point-of-care testing and high-throughput detection of early stage of COVID-19 infection.
In this paper, an optical fiber Fabry–Pérot (FP) microfluidic sensor based on the capillary fiber (CF) and side illumination method is designed. The hybrid FP cavity (HFP) is naturally formed by the inner air hole and silica wall of CF which is side illuminated by another single mode fiber (SMF). The CF acts as a naturally microfluidic channel, which can be served as a potential microfluidic solution concentration sensor. Moreover, the FP cavity formed by silica wall is insensitive to ambient solution refractive index but sensitive to the temperature. Thus, the HFP sensor can simultaneously measure microfluidic refractive index (RI) and temperature by cross-sensitivity matrix method. Three sensors with different inner air hole diameters were selected to fabricate and characterize the sensing performance. The interference spectra corresponding to each cavity length can be separated from each amplitude peak in the FFT spectra with a proper bandpass filter. Experimental results indicate that the proposed sensor with excellent sensing performance of temperature compensation is low-cost and easy to build, which is suitable for in situ monitoring and high-precision sensing of drug concentration and the optical constants of micro-specimens in the biomedical and biochemical fields.
