A method of local anode effect prediction is proposed for the problem that it is difficult to detect the local anode effect in large aluminum reduction cell in real time. Firstly, a fuzzy classification of local anode effect prediction in terms of fuzziness level is proposed considering various working conditions of anode current in the region. Secondly, a current volatility detection method based on time-sliding window density is designed from the problem of uneven current distribution in the region, and the anode currents in the region are classified and tracked for prediction according to the different current volatility. Thirdly, an improved Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) neural network structure is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy of fluctuating currents. Finally, simulation experiments are conducted based on actual data, and compared with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Convolutional Neural Network-Long Short-Term Memory (CNN-LSTM), the proposed method has certain advantages in both prediction time, training time, and the mean absolute error (MAE) and mean square error (MSE), which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Alumina concentration is an important parameter in the production process of aluminum electrolysis. Due to the complex production environment in the industrial field and the complex physical and chemical reactions in the aluminum reduction cell, nowadays it is still unable to carry out online measurement and real-time monitoring. For solving this problem, a soft-sensing model of alumina concentration based on a deep belief network (DBN) is proposed. However, the soft-sensing model may have some limitations for different cells and different periodic working conditions such as local anode effect, pole changing, and bus lifting in the same cell. The empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) with the DBN are combined, and an EMD–PSO–DBN method that can denoize and optimize the model structure is proposed. The simulation results show that the improved soft-sensing model improves the accuracy and universality of prediction.

In the aluminum electrolysis production process, the traditional cell control method based on cell voltage and series current can no longer meet the goals of energy conservation, consumption reduction, and digital-intelligent transformation. Therefore, a new digital cell control technology that is centrally dependent on various process parameters has become an urgent demand in the aluminum electrolysis industry. Among them, the real-time online measurement of alumina concentration is one of the key data points for implementing such technology. However, due to the harsh production environment and limitations of current sensor technologies, hardware-based detection of alumina concentration is difficult to achieve. To address this issue, this study proposes a soft-sensing model for alumina concentration based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network optimized by a weighted average algorithm (WAA). The proposed method outperforms BiLSTM, CNN-LSTM, CNN-BiLSTM, CNN-LSTM-Attention, and CNN-BiLSTM-Attention models in terms of predictive accuracy. In comparison to LSTM models optimized using the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO), Optuna, Tornado Optimization Algorithm (TOC), and Whale Migration Algorithm (WMA), the WAA-enhanced LSTM model consistently achieves significantly better performance. This superiority is evidenced by lower MAE and RMSE values, along with higher R2 and accuracy scores. The WAA-LSTM model remains stable throughout the training process and achieves the lowest final loss, further confirming the accuracy and superiority of the proposed approach.

An online prediction method of molten aluminium height is proposed based on extreme learning machine with kernel function (K-ELM). Firstly, relevant variables that can be measured online related to aluminium liquid fluctuations were obtained by analyzing the mechanism model of aluminium liquid fluctuations. Then, the online prediction method of molten aluminium height is proposed based on kernel function and ELM, which just use the anode-cathode voltage and the anode rod current data. Finally, the data collection and experiment of 3 sets of anode rods in the 200 kA series aluminium electrolytic cells are carried out on-site. The results show that the maximum absolute error is only 0.25 cm and relative error is less than 1.4%, which satisfied the production site requirements. Compared with existing methods, it has certain advantages in real-time and prediction accuracy and meets the real-time and accuracy requirements of the actual production process on-site.
