To study the mechanical properties of the China Railway Track System type II (CRTS-II) ballastless slab track structure, a 1/4-scale specimen of a CRTS-II slab ballastless track-32-m standard prefabricated simply supported box girder bridge with three spans and two high-speed railway lines was developed. The mechanical properties of the structure under the action of daily natural temperatures were studied under the natural environmental conditions. The structural strain and relative interlayer displacements were analyzed. The results show that the temperature of the CRTS-II ballastless track-bridge structural system changes periodically every 24 h. The strain of the structural layers of the track system first increases and then decreases sinusoidally, and the internal strain of the track system lags along the vertical depth direction. The relative displacement between the layers of the ballastless track bridge structure system increases with the increase in temperature. The extreme value of the vertical relative displacement appears between the track bed and the bridge at section 1/4 in the span, so it should be paid attention to by the maintenance personnel. Due to the constraint of the shear slots, the structural strain and relative displacement at the fixed end near the shear slots are smaller than those at the sliding end. The mid-span deflection is the largest, and the overall deflection during the cooling phase is more significant than that during the heating phase.

This article investigates the nonlinear behavior of single-keyed dry joints in segmental precast bridges under direct shear loading on the basis of nonlinear finite element analysis on lots of specimens with concrete plastic damage considered. Through detailed discussion on existing research, influence factors of the ultimate shear capacity of the keyed dry joint are analyzed, a new shear capacity formula was proposed and evaluated. The feasibility and correctness of the FE simulation method were verified by comparison with the existed experimental results. Concrete tensile strength at the key root is critical to the ultimate bearing capacity of the single-keyed dry joint under the direct shear loading. Friction on the joint interface and dimension parameters of the key do not have much effect on the ultimate shear capacity. However, reasonable key inclination (tanθ) would be suggested as 0.7~0.9. In comparison with the predicted results obtained by other existed formulas, the proposed formula is demonstrated to be in perfect consistency with both tests and the FE simulation results.

Due to the need for comprehensive transportation hub construction, an existing bridge in a bustling urban area with an operation duration of 25 years was required to be demolished. Based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), this paper proposes a scheme of “Self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) technology + large segment cutting” to compare the carbon emissions of demolition schemes qualitatively and quantitatively. To ensure structural safety during demolition, the finite element analysis was used to simulate the entire demolishing process, and measuring points were set up to monitor the deformation of the main girder in real time under various demolition conditions. The results indicate that the scheme of SPMT has the lowest carbon emissions during the demolition stage. Additionally, the long-term prestress loss shall be considered when demolishing existing bridges; the suggested 25% proportional value for the long-term prestress loss of the Caitian Bridge is appropriate, which is determined by comparing the calculated results from various formulas. The values of the calculated and measured deformations of the main girder under different working conditions are in good agreement, with errors mostly within 10% and a maximum of no more than 14.7%. The demolition of the entire bridge was completed in a total of 28 h with little noise and pollution, and the impact on daily traffic was avoided, proving that the proposed “SPMT technology + large segment cutting” scheme is safe, efficient, and achieves the goal of green, environmentally friendly, and rapid demolition.

An enormous surge in the pavement sector requires the evaluation of interface bonding in asphalt composite, since the assessment of bonding brings considerable cost savings. Microscopic and mechanical analyses were performed to study the status of the interface transition zone of four groups of asphalt mixtures, using thin-slice preparation to obtain asphalt mixture slices with a flat surface for microscopic analysis. The interface transition zones were characterized using good knowledge of blending or diffusion phenomena by conducting tests both at the micro and macro levels to determine mixture quality. Asphalt mixture components were observed using fluorescence microscopy imaging and evaluated by the gray value change law. Asphalt mixture groups, (virgin, recycled of 30% aged and 70% unaged, 6%, and 4% rejuvenator dosage mixtures) under the same process parameters, which are a mixing time of 270 s and a mixing temperature of 150 °C, been considered optimum for component fusion in a hot asphalt mixture were used. This study relied on the influence of morphology law, assessed through rutting tests for high temperature performance, semi-circular bending tests for low temperature performance, and pull-off tests for interface bonding strength. The relationship between interface transition zones and macro performance was studied. The self-developed pull-off method was a research innovation which can be used as an alternative to study interface transition zones in asphalt mixtures, and provides the necessary data needed with 3D surface failure mode calculations. The device measured the bonding strength of a single aggregate in distinct positions using the bitumen penetration test method. The main goals were to determine a correction factor, identify the appropriate alteration, and compute the actual fracture surface area. Using scanning electron microscopy for interface characterization and micro-morphologies of mortar transition zone, our analysis provides adequate knowledge about interface position and the components present. The applied approaches to characterize asphalt mixture interfaces proved workable and reliable, as all methods have similar trends with useful information to determine asphalt pavement quality.

A growing desire for the availability of clean energy in the railway environment has led to advancements in energy harvesting technologies. In particular, piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) have been shown to have potential benefits for the railway industry. Thus, this paper provides a review of PEH solutions for railway energy harvesting, focusing on their design, optimization, and implementation. It examines various energy sources, including vibration, mechanical stress, friction, sound, and wind energy, while also discussing the structural designs and materials employed to improve their performance. The review highlights the potential applications of PEHs in powering self-sustaining wireless sensors, monitoring systems, and trackside electronics. Despite notable advancements, challenges persist, particularly in energy conversion efficiency, structural durability, data transmission, and the integration of interface circuits. The paper further explores potential future research directions, underscoring the need for more efficient energy harvesting systems, multi-mechanism coupling, and robust solutions for the harsh environmental conditions under which railways operate. If future research can address these challenges, PEHs hold promise for powering smart and sustainable railway infrastructure.

This study aims to provide an effective method to study the behavior of a steel–concrete composite deck. First, the structural characteristics of the composite deck and the challenges arising in the computational analysis of the structure using general software are described. Then, an LPGE element that combines the plate element and the girder element into one element to conveniently construct the model with high computation efficiency is proposed. Based on the principle of multivariate field function, the constraint matrix for the plate and girder and the stiffness matrix for the LPGE are derived. The LPGE method is used to study the behavior of the composite deck through the computation of a steel truss arch bridge. The computation results are compared with the results obtained in ANSYS and the test results to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the LPGE method. The results of the paper offer references for the analysis of steel–concrete composite decks.
