Snow pea root rot in China is caused by Fusarium solani (FSH) and Fusarium avenaceum (FAH), which affect snow pea production. The chemical control methods used against FSH and FAH are toxic to the environment and resistance may be developed in persistence applications. Therefore, an alternative approach is needed to control these pathogens. This study focuses on Trichoderma longibrachiatum strains (TL6 and TL13), mycoparasitic mechanisms of FSH and FAH, as well as growth-promoting potentials on snow pea seedlings under FSH and FAH stress at the physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels. The average inhibitory rates of TL6 against FSH and FAH were 54.58% and 69.16%, respectively, on day 7. Similarly, TL13 average inhibitory rates against FSH and FAH were 59.06% and 71.27%, respectively, on day 7. The combined TL13 and TL6 with FSH and FAH reduced disease severity by 86.6, 81.6, 57.60, and 60.90%, respectively, in comparison to the controls. The snow pea plants inoculated with FSH and FAH without TL6 and TL13 increased malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) contents in the leaves by 64.8, 66.0, 64.4 and 65.9%, respectively, compared to the control. However, the combined FSH and FAH with TL6 and TL13 decreased the MDA and H2O2 content by 75.6, 76.8, 70.0, and 76.4%, respectively, in comparison to the controls. In addition, the combined TL6 + FSH and TL6 + FAH increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) by 60.5, 64.7, and 60.3%, respectively, and 60.0, 64.9, and 56.6%, respectively, compared to the controls. Again, compared to the controls, the combined TL13 + FSH and TL13 + FAH increased the activity of SOD, POD, and CAT by 69.7, 68.6, and 65.6%, respectively, and 70.10, 69.5, and 65.8%, respectively. Our results suggest that the pretreatment of snow pea seeds with TL6 and TL13 increases snow pea seedling growth, controls FSH and FAH root rot, increases antioxidant enzyme activity, and activates plant defense mechanisms. The TL13 strain had the greatest performance in terms of pathogen inhibition and snow pea growth promotion compared to the TL6 strain.

Potato soft rot, caused by the pathogenic bacterium Lelliottia amnigena (Enterobacter amnigenus), is a serious and widespread disease affecting global potato production. Both salicylic acid (SA) and proline (Pro) play important roles in enhancing potato tuber resistance to soft rot. However, the combined effects of SA and Pro on defense responses of potato tubers to L. amnigena infection remain unknown. Hence, the combined effects of SA and Pro in controlling newly emerging potato soft rot bacteria were investigated. Sterilized healthy potato tubers were pretreated with 1.5 mM SA and 2.0 mM Pro 24 h before an inoculation of 0.3 mL of L. amnigena suspension (3.69 × 107 CFU mL−1). Rotting was noticed on the surfaces of the hole where the L. amnigena suspension was inoculated. Application of SA and Pro with L. amnigena lowered the activity of pectinase, protease, pectin lyase, and cellulase by 64.3, 77.8, 66.4 and 84.1%, and decreased malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide contents by 77.2% and 83.8%, respectively, compared to the control. The activities of NADPH oxidase, superoxide dismutase, peroxide, catalase, polyphenol oxidase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase, 4-coumaryl-CoA ligase and cinnamate-4-hydroxylase were increased in the potato tubers with combined treatments by 91.4, 92.4, 91.8, 93.5, 94.9, 91.3, 96.2, 94.7 and 97.7%, respectively, compared to untreated stressed tubers. Six defense-related genes, pathogenesis-related protein, tyrosine-protein kinase, Chitinase-like protein, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, pathogenesis-related homeodomain protein, and serine protease inhibitor, were induced in SA + Pro treatment when compared with individual application of SA or Pro. This study indicates that the combined treatment of 1.5 mM SA and 2.0 mM Pro had a synergistic effect in controlling potato soft rot caused by a newly emerging bacterium.

Salinity is a major environmental factor that adversely affects plant growth and production. Cuticular wax protects plants against external environmental stress. The relationship between cuticular wax biosynthesis and salt tolerance remains unclear in Salicornia europaea. This study examined the cuticle thickness, wax load, morphology, composition, and the expression of cuticular wax biosynthesis gene identification and expression. The results showed that 600 mM NaCl treatment enhanced the cuticle thickness and total wax load; crystal wax structures were also observed after NaCl treatment. The cuticular wax was mainly composed of fatty acids, alcohols, alkenes, and esters. The alcohol class accounted for the largest proportion, with docosanol (C25H54OSi) being the main specific alcohol compound, followed by fatty acids and alkanes. After a sequence database search, six fatty acyl-CoA reductases (FARs), sixteen wax synthase/diacylglycerol acyltransferases (WS/DGATs), three fatty alcohol oxidases (FAOs), five eceriferums (CERs), and eight mid-chain alkanes (MAHs) were identified as the putative wax biosynthesis enzymes. Their expression analysis revealed a differential response to 100 and 600 mM NaCl treatment and reached the highest level at 12 h or 48 h. The genes that were evidently upregulated with higher fold changes under salinity, such as SeFAR1, SeFAR2, and SeFAR3 are implied to synthesize primary alcohols, and SeWSs convert the primary alcohols to wax esters; SeCER1 and SeCER3 are also supposed to catalyze the conversion of aldehydes to alkanes while SeMAH7 catalyze alkanes to secondary alcohols in S. europaea in response to NaCl treatment. This study demonstrated that both the decarbonylation and acyl-reduction wax biosynthesis pathways may not be independent from each other.

Growing pumpkins in controlled environments, such as greenhouses, has become increasingly important due to the potential to optimise yield and quality. However, achieving optimal environmental conditions for pumpkin cultivation requires precise monitoring and control, which can be facilitated by modern sensor technologies. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal placement of sensors to determine the influence of external parameters on the maturity of pumpkins. The greenhouse used in the study consisted of a plastic film for growing pumpkins. Five different sensors labeled from A1 to A5 measured the air temperature, humidity, soil temperature, soil humidity, and illumination at five different locations. We used two methods, error-based sensor placement and entropy-based sensor placement, to evaluate optimisation. We selected A3 sensor locations where the monitored data were close to the reference value, i.e., the average data of all measurement locations and parameters. Using this method, we selected sensor positions to monitor the influence of external parameters on the maturity of pumpkins. These methods enable the determination of optimal sensor locations to represent the entire facility environment and detect areas with significant environmental disparities. Our study provides an accurate measurement of the internal environment of a greenhouse and properly selects the base installation locations of sensors in the pumpkin greenhouse.
