Taxicabs play an important role in urban transit systems, and their ridership is significantly influenced by the urban built environment. The intricate relationship between taxi ridership and the urban environment has been explored using either conventional ordinary least squares (OLS) regression or geographically weighted regression (GWR). However, time constitutes a significant dimension, particularly when analyzing spatiotemporal hourly taxi ridership, which is not effectively incorporated into conventional models. In this study, the geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model was applied to model the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of hourly taxi ridership, and visualize the spatial and temporal coefficient variations. To test the performance of the GTWR model, an empirical study was implemented for Xiamen city in China using a set of weekday taxi pickup point data. Using point-of-interest (POI) data, hourly taxi ridership was analyzed by incorporating it to various spatially urban environment variables based on a 500 × 500 m grid unit. Compared to the OLS and GWR, the GTWR model obtained the best performance, both in terms of model fit and explanatory accuracy. Moreover, the urban environment was revealed to have a significant impact on taxi ridership. Road density was found to decrease the number of taxi trips in particular places, and the density of bus stops competed with taxi ridership over time. The GTWR modelling provides valuable insights for investigating taxi ridership variation as a function of spatiotemporal urban environment variables, thereby facilitating an optimal allocation of taxi resources and transportation planning.

Accurate mapping of temporal changes in urban land use and land cover (LULC) is important for monitoring urban expansion and changes in LULC, urban planning, environmental management, and environmental modeling. In this study, we present a feature-based approach of the decision tree classification (FBA-DTC) method for mapping LULC based on spectral and topographic information. Landsat 5 TM and Land 8 OLI images were employed, and the technique was applied to the coastal city of Xiamen, China. The method integrates multi-spectral features such as SAVI (soil adjustment vegetation index), NDWI (normalized water index), MNDBaI (modified normalized difference barren index), BI (brightness index), and WI (wetness index), with topographic features including DEM and slope. In addition, the new approach distinguishes between fallow land and cropland, and separates high-rise buildings from beaches and water bodies. Several of the FBA-DTC parameters (or rules) from 1997 to 2015 remained constant (i.e., DEM and slope), whereas others changed slightly. WI was negatively related to percent area of beach land, and BI was negatively related to percent area of arable land. The FBA-DTC method had an average user’s accuracy (UA) of 91.36% for built-up land, an average overall accuracy (OA) of 92.13%, and a Kappa coefficient (KC) of 0.90 for the period from 2003 to 2015, representing respective increases of 15.87%, 10.17%, and 0.13, compared with values calculated using maximum likelihood classification (MLC). Over the past 12 years, built-up land increased from 23.67% to 43.17% owing to occupation of coastal reclamation, arable land, and forest land. The FBA-DTC method presented here is a valuable technique for evaluating urban growth and changes in LULC classification for coastal cities.

Extracting high-accuracy landslide areas using deep learning methods from high spatial resolution remote sensing images is a hot topic in current research. However, the existing deep learning algorithms are affected by background noise and landslide scale effects during the extraction process, leading to poor feature extraction effects. To address this issue, this paper proposes an improved mask regions-based convolutional neural network (Mask R-CNN) model to identify the landslide distribution in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) images. The improvement of the model mainly includes three aspects: (1) an attention mechanism of the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is added to the backbone residual neural network (ResNet). (2) A bottom-up channel is added to the feature pyramidal network (FPN) module. (3) The region proposal network (RPN) is replaced by guided anchoring (GA-RPN). Sanming City, China was selected as the study area for the experiments. The experimental results show that the improved model has a recall of 91.4% and an accuracy of 92.6%, which is 12.9% and 10.9% higher than the original Mask R-CNN model, respectively, indicating that the improved model is more effective in landslide extraction.

The rapid growth of transportation network companies (TNCs) has reshaped the traditional taxi market in many modern cities around the world. This study aims to explore the spatiotemporal variations of built environment on traditional taxis (TTs) and TNC. Considering the heterogeneity of ridership distribution in spatial and temporal aspects, we implemented a geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model, which was improved by parallel computing technology, to efficiently evaluate the effects of local influencing factors on the monthly ridership distribution for both modes at each taxi zone. A case study was implemented in New York City (NYC) using 659 million pick-up points recorded by TT and TNC from 2015 to 2017. Fourteen influencing factors from four groups, including weather, land use, socioeconomic and transportation, are selected as independent variables. The modeling results show that the improved parallel-based GTWR model can achieve better fitting results than the ordinary least squares (OLS) model, and it is more efficient for big datasets. The coefficients of the influencing variables further indicate that TNC has become more convenient for passengers in snowy weather, while TT is more concentrated at the locations close to public transportation. Moreover, the socioeconomic properties are the most important factors that caused the difference of spatiotemporal patterns. For example, passengers with higher education/income are more inclined to select TT in the western of NYC, while vehicle ownership promotes the utility of TNC in the middle of NYC. These findings can provide scientific insights and a basis for transportation departments and companies to make rational and effective use of existing resources.

With the acceleration of urbanization, problems such as urban ecological environment quality have become increasingly prominent. How to scientifically analyze and evaluate the spatial pattern of urban ecological environment changes and influential variables is a prerequisite for achieving green development and ecological priority new in urban planning. Our study was conducted on Pingtan Island, located in Fujian Province, China. First, we selected Landsat 8 OLI images in 2013, 2017, and 2021. Second, we extracted the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) from these images and created RSEI maps to assess the spatial-temporal variations and spatial autocorrelation of the ecological environment condition in Pingtan Island. Third, the proportion of land-use types, road, and population density were selected as independent variable factors, RSEI as the dependent variable, least squares regression (OLS), geographically weighted regression (GWR), and multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) were used to establish global and local regression models. According to the regression coefficients of the model and its spatial distribution, the spatial heterogeneity between the ecological environment and the influencing factors was assessed. The results indicated that: (1) the mean value of the RSEI increased from 0.422 to 0.504 during 2013–2021, indicating that the overall ecological environment improved. (2) Based on the global Moran’s I value, the distribution of ecological environment quality was positively correlated. The local Moran’s I cluster map showed that the high-high cluster gradually extended to the northwest high-altitude region. Low-low clustering gradually extended to the more populous areas in the southeast. (3) The Radj2 of the MGWR model was 0.866, which was better than the results of the OLS model and GWR model, indicating that MGWR had obvious advantages in revealing the spatial heterogeneity between the ecological environment and the influencing factors. Importantly, the results indicate that population density, road density, and the proportion of cropland land and impervious surface in land-use types have varying degrees of negative effects on the urban ecological environment, with the impervious surface being more severe, followed by population density, while forest land in land-use types shows significant positive effects.

With the speeding up of urbanization process, ecological problems, such as unsustainable land use and environmental pollution, have emerged one after another in cites. Nowadays, green development and ecological priority are the important concepts and trends of the current new urban planning in China. In this study, Pingtan County, a coastal city in Fujian Province, China, was taken as the research area. Based on two Landsat 8 remote sensing images (2016, 2017), and two Sentinel-2A remote sensing images (2016, 2017), we first adopt the modified normalized water body index (MNDWI) to mask the water body. Four indicators, including greenness, humidity, dryness and heat were extracted to synthesize the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI), which were obtained by principal component analysis method. Based on the RSEI values acquired from Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2A images, the ecological environment change trend in Pingtan County was evaluated .The experimental results show that: 1) The RSEI indicators based on Landsat 8 and sentinel data all show a downward trend, but due to due to the influence of image spatial resolution and PCA weighting coefficient, the RSEI index has different degrees of decline. 2) The main reason for the decline in RSEI is the increase in NDSI indicators. Compared with July 2016, the bare ground increased in April 2017. Although the NDVI has increased, the overall trend is still declining. Therefore, it is necessary to ecologically return farmland and improve vegetation coverage in the future development process. 3) In recent years, the ecological quality of new construction land near drinking water sources has declined, so it is necessary to strengthen monitoring of changes in the region.
