The terms “inverse problems” and “ill-posed problems” have been steadily and surely gaining popularity in modern science since the middle of the 20th century. A little more than fifty years of studying problems of this kind have shown that a great number of problems from various branches of classical mathematics (computational algebra, differential and integral equations, partial differential equations, functional analysis) can be classified as inverse or ill-posed, and they are among the most complicated ones (since they are unstable and usually nonlinear). At the same time, inverse and ill-posed problems began to be studied and applied systematically in physics, geophysics, medicine, astronomy, and all other areas of knowledge where mathematical methods are used. The reason is that solutions to inverse problems describe important properties of media under study, such as density and velocity of wave propagation, elasticity parameters, conductivity, dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability, and properties and location of inhomogeneities in inaccessible areas, etc. In this paper we consider definitions and classification of inverse and ill-posed problems and describe some approaches which have been proposed by outstanding Russian mathematicians A. N. Tikhonov, V. K. Ivanov and M. M. Lavrentiev.

: We consider the continuation problem from the time-like surface for the 2D Maxwell equation. The problem is formulated in an operator form . We describe and justify gradient methods for minimizing the cost functional for the continuation and coefficient inverse problems. The results of a computational experiment are presented.

The inverse problem for the acoustic equation is considered. We propose a method of reconstruction of the density approximating 2D inverse acoustic problem by a finite system of one dimensional inverse acoustic problems. The 2D analogy of the Gel'fand–Levitan–Krein method is established. The inverse acoustic problem is formulated and the short outline of the history and development in this field are given in Section 1. In Section 2 we consider the 2D analogy of the Gel'fand–Levitan–Krein equation. The N-approximation of the Gel'fand–Levitan–Krein equation is obtained for inverse acoustic problem in Section 3. The numerical results are presented in Section 4.

In this paper we apply the notion of quasi-solution to nonlinear inverse coefficient problems. Instead of a compact set M we use the ball B(0, r) in which the radius r occurred to be sometimes a regularization parameter. Moreover this constant allows one to estimate the convergence rate for many well-known algorithms for solving inverse coefficient problems and to decrease crucially the number of iterations.

We investigate inverse problems of finding unknown parameters of mathematical models SEIR-HCD and SEIR-D of COVID-19 spread with additional information about the number of detected cases, mortality, self-isolation coefficient, and tests performed for the city of Moscow and Novosibirsk region since 23.03.2020. In SEIR-HCD the population is divided into seven groups, and in SEIR-D into five groups with similar characteristics and transition probabilities depending on the specific region of interest. An identifiability analysis of SEIR-HCD is made to reveal the least sensitive unknown parameters as related to the additional information. The parameters are corrected by minimizing some objective functionals which is made by stochastic methods (simulated annealing, differential evolution, and genetic algorithm). Prognostic scenarios for COVID-19 spread in Moscow and in Novosibirsk region are developed, and the applicability of the models is analyzed.

Four simple mathematical models of pharmacokinetic, competition between immune and tumor cells, infectious disease and tuberculosis epidemic are considered. An optimization approach for identification those models based on gradient type methods is introduced. Inverse problems are formulated in the form of an operator equation and then reduced to the minimization of the corresponding misfit functionals. The adjoint problems are used for the calculation of gradients. A mathematical model of competition between immune and tumor cells is considered numerically. The results of a numerical experiment are demonstrated.
