Visible light communication (VLC), combining wireless communication with white lighting, has many advantages. It is free of electromagnetic interference, is rich in spectrum resources, and has a gigabit-per-second (Gbps) data rate. Laser diodes (LDs) are emerging as promising light sources for high-speed VLC communication due to their high modulation bandwidth. In this paper, we demonstrate a red/green/blue (R/G/B) LDs based VLC system with a recorded data rate of 46.41 Gbps, employing discrete multitone (DMT) and adaptive bit-loading technology to achieve high spectral efficiency (SE). The emission characteristics and transmission performance of R/G/B-LDs are discussed. The optimal data rates of R/G/B-LDs channels are 17.168/14.652/14.590 Gbps, respectively. The bit-error-ratio (BER) of each channel satisfies the 7% forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold (3.8×10−3) and greatly approaches the channel Shannon limit.

In the upcoming 6G, the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system in the millimeter wave (MMW) band will have a vital role in numerous application scenarios, enhancing the convenience of our lives. The photonic-based MMW ISAC system can exploit the broad bandwidth of photonic devices, significantly improving system performance. Furthermore, the use of photonic devices enables the seamless integration of the ISAC system with the fiber-wireless network. In this paper, we proposed a simple-structured photonic-based W-band ISAC system, incorporating optical fiber transmission into the system. Additionally, we designed integrated waveforms for time-frequency-division multiplexing (TFDM), allowing for flexible tradeoffs between data rate, range resolution, and detection distance according to the requirements of application scenarios. As a proof-of-concept, a photonic-based ISAC system for the fiber-wireless network with flexible TFDM waveforms at 96.5 GHz over 10-km fiber transmission was demonstrated, achieving adaptive access rates from 15 to 60 Gbit/s after transmission over 1-m free space, and adaptive range resolutions from 1.53 to 4.39 cm. Moreover, this paper provides a detailed analysis of the causes of system distance error and corresponding solutions. In the experiment, the distance error of the proposed system can be reduced to less than 3 cm after external calibration.

Seamless fiber-terahertz integrated communication has emerged as a promising technology in the special field of 6G, including mobile fronthaul and wireless bridges. Electronic terahertz communication systems have the advantages of high-level integration, small form factors, and potentially low costs, but their drawbacks are their small bandwidths and high harmonic interference levels. In this paper, an end-to-end learning-based waveform-to-waveform automatic equalization framework (W2WAEF) is proposed to overcome the above shortcomings in a seamless fiber-terahertz integrated communication system. An attention-based three-tributary heterogeneous neural network (ATTH) is designed to simulate the channel model of a seamless fiber-wireless communication system, taking fiber optics, optical-to-electrical conversion, and electrogenerated terahertz waves into account. With the proposed method, a data rate of 80.78 Gbps is experimentally demonstrated for discrete multitone modulation (DMT) signals over 5 km of fiber and 1 m of 209-GHz terahertz signals under a 20% soft decision-forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2.4×10 -2 . Compared with an approach without preprocessing, a receiver sensitivity gain exceeding 1.3 dB is successfully achieved at a data rate of 60 Gbps. The proposed method is a promising scheme for meeting the high speed and low-cost demands of future seamless fiber-terahertz integrated communication systems.
The integration of sensing and communication (ISAC) in millimeter-waves (MMW) will play an important role in future 6G applications. Photonics-based radar sensing and communication systems have the advantages of high bandwidth in terms of high-resolution sensing and high-speed data transmission and can be inherently integrated with fiber-optic networks. To support flexible application scenarios, in this paper, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated an MMW photonics-based flexible ISAC system with adaptive signal waveforms for a W-band fiber-wireless integrated network. Photonics-based W-band ISAC signals are generated by heterodyning two free-running external cavity lasers. Microwave photonics-based radar signal processing supports centralized and seamless fiber-wireless communication and sensing networks. In our proposed system, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and linear frequency modulation (LFM) signals were combined by frequency-division multiplexing to share this bandwidth. Therefore, we can adaptively allocate bandwidths to OFDM and LFM signals according to the application requirements and realize a flexible ISAC system with high-speed communication and high-resolution radar sensing. As a proof-of-concept, a flexible W-band fiber-wireless ISAC system at 96.5 GHz over 10-km fiber transmission was demonstrated, achieving adaptive access rates from 5.98 to 41.48 Gbit/s after transmission over 1-m free space, and adaptive sensing resolutions from 1.53 to 6.94 cm with the distance error after calibration less than 4 cm. The performance of both communication and sensing under different bandwidth ratios was also studied.

Coherent technology is a promising solution for future 100-Gb/s and even 200-Gb/s single-wavelength time-division multiplexing passive optical network (TDM-PON) systems. One of the key issues for coherent TDM-PON is the upstream burst-mode amplification. The limited resolution of the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) makes it challenging to detect burst signals with widely varying power levels. Local oscillator (LO) power adjustment is a promising solution to this problem. In the present study, we verified the feasibility of LO power adjustment for adaptive amplification in a 200-G coherent TDM-PON system. We investigated the overall performance of the system under different implementation conditions, such as ADC sampling scales, TIA MGC mode control voltages, LO optical power levels, and the received optical power (ROP). Simulation and experimental results indicated that LO power adjustment can widen the dynamic range of the coherent PON system. As a proof of concept, we tested the system performance with continuous-mode signals and signals of isolated patterns with a burst-mode data frame. The dynamic range was extended to >30 dB via LO power adjustment, with 38- and 37-dB power budgets for 200-Gb/s/λ coherent TDM-PON continuous signals and signals of isolated patterns, respectively, after a 50-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF).
Hyperspectral imaging that detects 3D spectra-spatial information has been used in a wide range of applications. Among reported techniques, multiplexed spectral imaging with a single-pixel detector provides as a photon-efficient and low-cost implementation; however, the previous spectral modulation schemes are mostly complicated and sacrifice the imaging speed. Here, we propose a fast and compact hyperspectral single-pixel imaging technique based on programmable chromatic illumination. A multi-wavelength LED array modulated by independent carriers achieves stable and accurate spectral modulation up to MHz in a frequency-division multiplexed manner, hence allowing the full use of the spatial light modulation speed. Additionally, we propose a multi-channel deep convolutional autoencoder network to reconstruct hyperspectral data from highly-compressed 1D measurement. Experimental reconstructions of 12 spectral channels and 64 × 64 pixels are demonstrated for dynamic imaging at 12 fps image rate. The proposed imaging scheme is highly extensible to a wide spectrum range, and holds potential for portable spectral imagers in low-light or scattering applications.
