The complementary nature of different modalities and multiple bands used in remote sensing data is helpful for tasks such as change detection and the prediction of agricultural variables. Nonetheless, correctly processing a multi-modal dataset is not a simple task, owing to the presence of different data resolutions and formats. In the past few years, graph-based methods have proven to be a useful tool in capturing inherent data similarity, in spite of different data formats, and preserving relevant topological and geometric information. In this paper, we propose a graph-based data fusion algorithm for remotely sensed images applied to (i) data-driven semi-unsupervised change detection and (ii) biomass estimation in rice crops. In order to detect the change, we evaluated the performance of four competing algorithms on fourteen datasets. To estimate biomass in rice crops, we compared our proposal in terms of root mean squared error (RMSE) concerning a recent approach based on vegetation indices as features. The results confirm that the proposed graph-based data fusion algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art methods for change detection and biomass estimation in rice crops.

The recurrent use of databases with categorical variables in different applications demands new alternatives to identify relevant patterns. Classification is an interesting approach for the recognition of this type of data. However, there are a few amount of methods for this purpose in the literature. Also, those techniques are specifically focused only on kernels, having accuracy problems and high computational cost. For this reason, we propose an identification approach for categorical variables using conventional classifiers (LDC-QDC-KNN-SVM) and different mapping techniques to increase the separability of classes. Specifically, we map the initial features (categorical attributes) to another space, using the Chi-square (C-S) as a measure of dissimilarity. Then, we employ the (t-SNE) for reducing dimensionality of data to two or three features, allowing a significant reduction of computational times in learning methods. We evaluate the performance of proposed approach in terms of accuracy for several experimental configurations and public categorical datasets downloaded from the UCI repository, and we compare with relevant state of the art methods. Results show that C-S mapping and t-SNE considerably diminish the computational times in recognitions tasks, while the accuracy is preserved. Also, when we apply only the C-S mapping to the datasets, the separability of classes is enhanced, thus, the performance of learning algorithms is clearly increased.

The success of stereotactic surgery for Deep Brain Stimulation depends critically on the exact positioning of a microelectrode recording in a target area of the brain. This paper presents the software system NEUROZONE composed of two main applications: first, it allows online recognition of brain structures by the analysis of signals from microelectrode recordings (MER), and second, it processes and analyses off-line databases allowing the inclusion of new trained classifiers for automatic identification. The software serves as a support to the analysis done by a medical specialist during surgery, and seeks to reduce the adverse side effects that may occur because of inadequate identification of the target areas. The software also allows the specialists to label recordings obtained during surgery, in order to generate a new off-line database or increase the amount of records in an already existing off-line database. NEUROZONE has been tested for Deep Brain Stimulation performed at the Institute for Epilepsy and Parkinson of the Eje Cafetero (Colombia), achieving positive identifications of the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN) over to 85% using a naive Bayes classifier.
