This study aims to establish whether the use of biomaterials, particularly polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), for surgical reconstruction of the esophagus with templates, Montgomery salivary tube, after radical oncology surgery for malignant neoplasia is an optimal choice for patients’ safety and for optimal function preservation and organ rehabilitation. Structural analysis by Raman spectrometry and biomechanical properties with dynamic mechanical analysis are performed for fatigue strength and toughness, essential factors in durability of a prosthesis in the reconstruction practice of the esophagus. Nanocomposites with silicone elastomers and nanoparticles used in implantable devices and in reconstruction surgery present risks of infection and fatigue strength when required to perform a mechanical effort for long periods of time. This report takes into account the effect of silver (Ag) nanoparticles on the fatigue strength using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix, representative for silicon elastomers used in implantable devices. PDMS with 5% (wt) Ag nanoparticles of 100–150 nm during mechanical fatigue testing at shear strength loses elasticity properties after 400 loading-unloading cycles and up to 15% shear strain. The fatigue strength, toughness, maximum shear strength, as well as clinical properties are key issues in designing Montgomery salivary tube and derivates with appropriate biomechanical behavior for each patient. Prosthesis design needs to indulge both clinical outcomes as well as design methods and research in the field of biomaterials.

The scavenger properties of some flavonoidic vegetal extracts obtained from Crataegus monogyna Jacq have been studied using the chemiluminescence technique and ex vivo lipid peroxidation assay. A correlation between antioxidant activity and phenolic/flavonoidic content was observed for all the seven extracts, and a parallel behaviour with the antioxidant activity determinated by ex vivo lipid peroxidation assay and in vitro chemiluminescence tests was also noted.

This paper presents the impact on the atmospheric environment of organic solvents used in pharmaceutical industry, investigated by FTIR gas analysis. The experimental data emphasized that this technique represents a fast and efficient method of analysis for gaseous emissions from studied solvents (ethanol, methanol, acetic acid). The study of the spectra samples indicates a good capability of the method to detect gases in indoor air from different concentrations and volumes of solvents in mixed solutions up to units of ppm and hundreds of micro liters. The results emphasized a good correlation between the concentrations of the solvents in the gaseous phase from the environment and the concentration of the solvent from the analyzed solutions. Moreover, the study shows the persistence in time of the air pollution in the technological areas of pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

This study presents the extractive technological processes and processing of some selective vegetal extracts in order to obtain an antioxidant product with prophylactic and therapeutic activity in hepatic diseases. For obtaining this bioproduct two species have been used: Sylibum marianum L. and Hypericum perforatum L. This bioproduct has been characterized by chemical analysis, chemiluminescence, antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities. The results of the in vivo experimental methods emphasizes that the tested vegetal product decreases the lipid peroxidation and liver enzimes level in CCl4-treated rats, thus recommending this bioproduct for utilization in prophylaxy and treatment of hepatic/hepatobiliar diseases.

The 1-substituted derivative of 3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, with benzothyazol was investigated in the system with some lanthanide cations: La3+, Ce3+, Pr3+, Sm3+, Gd3+, Ho3+, Eu3+, Tb3+, Er3+. The synthesis of these hybride compounds was found to be influenced by the proton affinity constants of the donors and those of the steric hindrance offered by the three chelate rings of the 1-(2′-benzthyazolyl)-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone(BTMP)around the metal cation to the approaching oxodonor as well as the preference of the lanthanide cations for the nitrogen atom as a donor. The structure of the products was proved by the elemental analysis, IR, UV-VIS spectra, molar conductance and molecular weight data and the thermogravimetrical study and all complexes correspond to a mononuclear monomers with the general formula.[Ln(BTMP)3(H2O)2].H2O. The synthesized compounds are expected to have luminiscent, antibacterial properties as a monomers or in a polymeric matrix.
