The green plum is rich in amino acids, lipids, inorganic salts, vitamins, and trace elements. It has high nutritional value and medicinal value and is very popular among Chinese people. However, green plums are susceptible to collisions and pests during growth, picking, storage, and transportation, causing surface defects, affecting the quality of green plums and their products and reducing their economic value. In China, defect detection and grading of green plum products are still performed manually. Traditional manual classification has low accuracy and high cost, which is far from meeting the production needs of green plum products. In order to improve the economic value of green plums and their products and improve the automation and intelligence level of the product production process, this study adopted deep learning methods based on a convolutional neural network and cost-effective computer vision technology to achieve efficient classification of green plum defects. First, a camera and LEDs were used to collect 1240 green plum images of RGB, and the green plum experimental classification standard was formulated and divided into five categories, namely, rot, spot, scar, crack, and normal. Images were randomly divided into a training set and test set, and the number of images of the training set was expanded. Then, the stochastic weight averaging (SWA) optimizer and w-softmax loss function were used to improve the VGG network, which was trained and tested to generate a green plum defect detection network model. The average recognition accuracy of green plum defects was 93.8%, the test time for each picture was 84.69 ms, the recognition rate of decay defect was 99.25%, and the recognition rate of normal green plum was 95.65%. The results were compared with the source VGG network, resnet18 network, and green lemon network. The results show that for the classification of green plum defects, the recognition accuracy of the green plum defect detection network increased by 9.8% and 16.6%, and the test speed is increased by 1.87 and 6.21 ms, respectively, which has certain advantages.

Blueberries, which are rich in nutrition, are susceptible to fungal infection during postharvest or storage. However, early detection of diseases in blueberry is challenging because of their opaque appearance and the inconspicuousness of spots in the early stage of disease. The goal of this study was to investigate the potential of hyperspectral imaging over the spectral range of 400–1000 nm to discriminate early disease in blueberries. Scanning electron microscope observation verified that fungal damage to the cellular structure takes place during the early stages. A total of 400 hyperspectral images, 200 samples each of healthy and early disease groups, were collected to obtain mean spectra of each blueberry samples. Spectral correlation analysis was performed to select an effective spectral range. Partial least square discrimination analysis (PLSDA) models were developed using two types of spectral range (i.e., full wavelength range of 400–1000 nm and effective spectral range of 685–1000 nm). The results showed that the effective spectral range made it possible to provide better classification results due to the elimination of the influence of irrelevant variables. Moreover, the effective spectral range combined with an autoscale preprocessing method was able to obtain optimal classification accuracies, with recognition rates of 100% and 99% for healthy and early disease blueberries. This study demonstrated that it is feasible to use hyperspectral imaging to measure early disease blueberries.

This paper reports the nondestructive detection of apple varieties using a multichannel hyperspectral imaging system consisting of an illumination fiber and 30 detection fibers arranged at source–detector distances of 1.5–36 mm over the spectral range of 550–1650 nm. Spatially resolved (SR) spectra were obtained for 1500 apples, 500 each of three varieties from the same orchard to avoid environmental and geographical influences. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA) models were developed for single SR spectra and spectral combinations to compare their performance of variety detection. To evaluate the effect of spectral range on variety detection, three types of spectra (i.e., visible region: 550–780 nm, near-infrared region: 780–1650 nm, full region: 550–1650 nm) were analyzed and compared. The results showed that the single SR spectra presented a different accuracy for apple variety classification, and the optimal SR spectra varied with spectral types. Spectral combinations had better accuracies for variety detection with best overall classifications of 99.4% for both spectral ranges in the NIR and full regions; however, the spectral combination could not improve the results over the optimal single SR spectra in the visible region. Moreover, the recognition of golden delicious (GD) was better than those of the other two varieties, with the best classification accuracy of 100% for three types of spectra. Overall, the multichannel hyperspectral imaging system provides more spatial-spectral information for the apples, and the results demonstrate that the technique gave excellent classifications, which suggests that the multichannel hyperspectral imaging system has potential for apple variety detection.

Engineering bamboo is a type of cheap and good-quality, easy-to-process material, which is widely used in construction engineering, bridge engineering, water conservancy engineering and other fields; however, crack defects lead to reduced reliability of the engineered bamboo. Accurate identification of the crack tip position and crack propagation length can improve the reliability of the engineered bamboo. Digital image correlation technology and high-quality images have been used to measure the crack tip damage zone of engineered bamboo, but the improvement of image quality with more-advanced optical equipment is limited. In this paper, we studied an application based on deep learning providing a super-resolution reconstruction method in the field of engineered bamboo DIC technology. The attention-dense residual and generative adversarial network (ADRAGAN) model was trained using a comprehensive loss function, where network interpolation was used to balance the network parameters to suppress artifacts. Compared with the super resolution generative adversarial network (SRGAN),super resolution ResNet (SRResNet), and bicubic B-spline interpolation, the superiority of the ADRAGAN network in super-resolution reconstruction of engineered bamboo speckle images was verified through assessment of both objective evaluation indices (PSNR and SSIM) and a subjective evaluation index (MOS). Finally, the images generated by each algorithm were imported into the DIC analysis software, and the crack propagation length was calculated and compared. The obtained results indicate that the proposed ADRAGAN method can reconstruct engineered bamboo speckle images with high quality, obtaining a crack detection accuracy of 99.65%.

To improve the intelligence level of particleboard inspection lines, machine vision and artificial intelligence technologies are combined to replace manual inspection with automatic detection. Aiming at the problem of missed detection and false detection on small defects due to the large surface width, complex texture and different surface defect shapes of particleboard, this paper introduces image super-resolution technology and proposes a super-resolution reconstruction model for particleboard images. Based on the Transformer network, this model incorporates an improved SRResNet (Super-Resolution Residual Network) backbone network in the deep feature extraction module to extract deep texture information. The shallow features extracted by conv 3 × 3 are then fused with features extracted by the Transformer, considering both local texture features and global feature information. This enhances image quality and makes defect details clearer. Through comparison with the traditional bicubic B-spline interpolation method, ESRGAN (Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network), and SwinIR (Image Restoration Using Swin Transformer), the effectiveness of the particleboard super-resolution reconstruction model is verified using objective evaluation metrics including PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS, demonstrating its ability to produce higher-quality images with more details and better visual characteristics. Finally, using the YOLOv8 model to compare defect detection rates between super-resolution images and low-resolution images, the mAP can reach 96.5%, which is 25.6% higher than the low-resolution image recognition rate.

As an important forest product, particleboard can greatly save forestry resources and promote low-carbon development by reusing wood processing residues. The size of the entire particleboard is large, and there are problems with less image feature information and blurred defect outlines when obtaining the particleboard images. The super-resolution reconstruction technology can improve the quality of the particleboard surface images, making the defects clearer. In this study, the super-resolution dense attention generative adversarial network (SRDAGAN) model was improved to solve the problem that the super-resolution generative adversarial network (SRGAN) reconstructed image would produce artifacts and its performance needed to be improved. The Batch Normalization (BN) layer was removed, the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) was optimized to construct the dense block, and the dense blocks were constructed via a densely skip connection. Then, the corresponding 52,400 image blocks with high resolution and low resolution were trained, verified, and tested according to the ratio of 3:1:1. The model was comprehensively evaluated from the effect of image reconstruction and the three indexes of PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS. It was found that compared with BICUBIC, SRGAN, and SWINIR, the PSNR index of SRDAGAN increased by 4.88 dB, 3.25 dB, and 2.68 dB, respectively; SSIM increased by 0.0507, 0.1122, and 0.0648, respectively; and LPIPS improved by 0.1948, 0.1065, and 0.0639, respectively. The reconstructed images not only had a clearer texture, but also had a more realistic expression of various features, and the performance of the model had been greatly improved. At the same time, this study also emphatically discussed the image reconstruction effect with defects. The result showed that the SRDAGAN proposed in this study can complete the super-resolution reconstruction of the particleboard images with high quality. In the future, it can also be further combined with defect detection for the actual production to improve the quality of forestry products and increase economic benefits.
