Due to the lack of forest resources in China and the low detection efficiency of wood surface defects, the output of solid wood panels is not high. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for detecting surface defects of solid wood panels based on a Single Shot MultiBox Detector algorithm (SSD) to detect typical wood surface defects. The wood panel images are acquired by an independently designed image acquisition system. The SSD model included the first five layers of the VGG16 network, the SSD feature mapping layer, the feature detection layer, and the Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) module. We used TensorFlow to train the network and further improved it on the basis of the SSD network structure. As the basic network part of the improved SSD model, the deep residual network (ResNet) replaced the VGG network part of the original SSD network to optimize the input features of the regression and classification tasks of the predicted bounding box. The solid wood panels selected in this paper are Chinese fir and pine. The defects include live knots, dead knots, decay, mildew, cracks, and pinholes. A total of more than 5000 samples were collected, and the data set was expanded to 100,000 through data enhancement methods. After using the improved SSD model, the average detection accuracy of the defects we obtained was 89.7%, and the average detection time was 90 ms. Both the detection accuracy and the detection speed were improved.

The deep learning feature extraction method and extreme learning machine (ELM) classification method are combined to establish a depth extreme learning machine model for wood image defect detection. The convolution neural network (CNN) algorithm alone tends to provide inaccurate defect locations, incomplete defect contour and boundary information, and inaccurate recognition of defect types. The nonsubsampled shearlet transform (NSST) is used here to preprocess the wood images, which reduces the complexity and computation of the image processing. CNN is then applied to manage the deep algorithm design of the wood images. The simple linear iterative clustering algorithm is used to improve the initial model; the obtained image features are used as ELM classification inputs. ELM has faster training speed and stronger generalization ability than other similar neural networks, but the random selection of input weights and thresholds degrades the classification accuracy. A genetic algorithm is used here to optimize the initial parameters of the ELM to stabilize the network classification performance. The depth extreme learning machine can extract high-level abstract information from the data, does not require iterative adjustment of the network weights, has high calculation efficiency, and allows CNN to effectively extract the wood defect contour. The distributed input data feature is automatically expressed in layer form by deep learning pre-training. The wood defect recognition accuracy reached 96.72% in a test time of only 187 ms.

This paper reports the nondestructive detection of apple varieties using a multichannel hyperspectral imaging system consisting of an illumination fiber and 30 detection fibers arranged at source–detector distances of 1.5–36 mm over the spectral range of 550–1650 nm. Spatially resolved (SR) spectra were obtained for 1500 apples, 500 each of three varieties from the same orchard to avoid environmental and geographical influences. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA) models were developed for single SR spectra and spectral combinations to compare their performance of variety detection. To evaluate the effect of spectral range on variety detection, three types of spectra (i.e., visible region: 550–780 nm, near-infrared region: 780–1650 nm, full region: 550–1650 nm) were analyzed and compared. The results showed that the single SR spectra presented a different accuracy for apple variety classification, and the optimal SR spectra varied with spectral types. Spectral combinations had better accuracies for variety detection with best overall classifications of 99.4% for both spectral ranges in the NIR and full regions; however, the spectral combination could not improve the results over the optimal single SR spectra in the visible region. Moreover, the recognition of golden delicious (GD) was better than those of the other two varieties, with the best classification accuracy of 100% for three types of spectra. Overall, the multichannel hyperspectral imaging system provides more spatial-spectral information for the apples, and the results demonstrate that the technique gave excellent classifications, which suggests that the multichannel hyperspectral imaging system has potential for apple variety detection.

MnO2 nanorod/carbon cloth (MnO2/CC) composites were prepared through in situ redox deposition as freestanding electrodes for flexible supercapacitors. The CC substrates possessing porous and interconnecting structures enable the uniform decoration of MnO2 nanorods on each fiber, thus forming conformal coaxial micro/nanocomposites. Three-dimensional CC can provide considerable specific surface area for high mass loading of MnO2, and the direct deposition process without using polymeric binders enables reliable electrical connection of MnO2 with CC. The effect of MnO2 decoration on the electrochemical performances was further investigated, indicating that the electrode prepared with 40 min deposition time shows high specific capacitance (220 F/g at a scan rate of 5 mV/s) and good cycling property (90% of the initial specific capacitance was maintained after 2500 cycles) in 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution. This enhanced electrochemical performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of good conductivity of carbon substrates as well as outstanding pseudocapacitance of MnO2 nanorods. The obtained MnO2/CC compositing electrode with the advantages of low cost and easy fabrication is promising in applications of flexible supercapacitors.

Green plums have produced significant economic benefits because of their nutritional and medicinal value. However, green plums are affected by factors such as plant diseases and insect pests during their growth, picking, transportation, and storage, which seriously affect the quality of green plums and their products, reducing their economic and nutritional value. At present, in the detection of green plum defects, some researchers have applied deep learning to identify their surface defects. However, the recognition rate is not high, the types of defects identified are singular, and the classification of green plum defects is not detailed enough. In the actual production process, green plums often have more than one defect, and the existing detection methods ignore minor defects. Therefore, this study used the vision transformer network model to identify all defects on the surfaces of green plums. The dataset was classified into multiple defects based on the four types of defects in green plums (scars, flaws, rain spots, and rot) and one type of feature (stem). After the permutation and combination of these defects, a total of 18 categories were obtained after the screening, combined with the actual situation. Based on the VIT model, a fine-grained defect detection link was added to the network for the analysis layer of the major defect hazard level and the detection of secondary defects. The improved network model has an average recognition accuracy rate of 96.21% for multiple defect detection of green plums, which is better than that of the VGG16 network, the Desnet121 network, the Resnet18 network, and the WideResNet50 network.

To improve the intelligence level of particleboard inspection lines, machine vision and artificial intelligence technologies are combined to replace manual inspection with automatic detection. Aiming at the problem of missed detection and false detection on small defects due to the large surface width, complex texture and different surface defect shapes of particleboard, this paper introduces image super-resolution technology and proposes a super-resolution reconstruction model for particleboard images. Based on the Transformer network, this model incorporates an improved SRResNet (Super-Resolution Residual Network) backbone network in the deep feature extraction module to extract deep texture information. The shallow features extracted by conv 3 × 3 are then fused with features extracted by the Transformer, considering both local texture features and global feature information. This enhances image quality and makes defect details clearer. Through comparison with the traditional bicubic B-spline interpolation method, ESRGAN (Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network), and SwinIR (Image Restoration Using Swin Transformer), the effectiveness of the particleboard super-resolution reconstruction model is verified using objective evaluation metrics including PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS, demonstrating its ability to produce higher-quality images with more details and better visual characteristics. Finally, using the YOLOv8 model to compare defect detection rates between super-resolution images and low-resolution images, the mAP can reach 96.5%, which is 25.6% higher than the low-resolution image recognition rate.
